The Avengers movies are replete with memorable quotes, with the MCU’s fan-favorite villains being responsible for some of the best. Since debuting in their first iconic team-up in 2012’s The Avengers, the titular team banded together three more times before Avengers: Endgame drew a line beneath the first iteration. The MCU has now gone five years without another team taking their place, with 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty ostensibly being the first movie in which a new team will emerge.

Thanos

During their seven-year career, the Avengers have gone up against some of the MCU’s most iconic and powerful villains. Foremost among these is the Infinity Saga’s big bad himself, Thanos, who has given MCU fans some of the most quotable lines. He isn’t the only villain to come out with some of the most memorable one-liners in Avengers movies, however. Here are 10 of the best lines that he and other Avengers villains have come out with.

10 “You Should Have Gone For The Head.”

Thanos – Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War broke with convention by ending with the heroes’ failure. Despite forging a new weapon from the same Uru metal as Mjolnir, Thor’s god-killing Stormbreaker ultimately failed to spell Thanos’ doom. Upon descending into the Battle of Wakanda with his customary flair, Thor made his way to Thanos moments after the Infinity Gauntlet was completed and sunk the ax into Thanos’ chest, pushing it in while ensuring he could look into the Mad Titan’s eyes as he gloated: “I told you you’d die for that.”

Though it isn’t quite as frustrating as Star-Lord’s attack on Titan freeing Thanos from Mantis’ influence, it is difficult to reconcile the fact that Thor was inches away from preventing the Snap entirely.

Thanos’ retort would haunt Thor for the weeks following the Snap and beyond, with the God of Thunder placing the burden of Thanos’ success on his own shoulders. Though it isn’t quite as frustrating as Star-Lord’s attack on Titan freeing Thanos from Mantis’ influence, it is difficult to reconcile the fact that Thor was inches away from preventing the Snap entirely. Thanos’ final words to Thor severely compound that frustration, with his words ringing in the silence that followed this tragic climax.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War, have assembled the largest ensemble in a superhero film to date. Nearly every living character in the MCU is included as the Avengers join forces with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take down Thanos in a battle that has massive repercussions for the future of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. A sequel, Avengers: Endgame, was released in 2019 and marked the end of the Infinity Saga.

9 “I Don’t Even Know Who You Are.”

Thanos – Avengers: Endgame

After undergoing one of the most agonizing experiences in Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda Maximoff’s shot at vengeance was one of the most visceral moments in Avengers: Endgame. As one of the most powerful characters in the entire MCUannounced to Thanos, “You took everything from me,” Thanos’ response came before the two would go toe-to-toe in earnest, forcing Thanos to go for broke and “rain fire” on the battlefield, subjecting his own troops to the same barrage. The desperate move would ultimately spare Thanos from Wanda’s wrath, however, proving Thanos’ resourcefulness and Wanda’s power levels in one fell swoop.

Before the Avengers’ determination forced Thanos to break and express a personal distaste for Earth, he was defined by his dispassionate pursuit of his goals. Although it was spoken by a version of Thanos that had yet to encounter the Scarlet With, this line epitomizes Thanos’ implacable nature, carrying an air of superiority in response to Wanda’s traumatic encounter with his variant. It would also precede one of Wanda’s coolest moments as she simply responds, “You will,” before unleashing a barrage of chaos magic.

8 “An Ant Has No Quarrel With A Boot.”

Loki – The Avengers

Loki’s arrival in The Avengers came with a terrifying display of his godlike powers. After being transported to Earth via the Tesseract, Loki looks decidedly more bedraggled than his last appearance in Thor, emerging from the portal with a dark-eyed Kubric stare. He makes quick work of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents before binding Hawkeye to his will and demanding the Tesseract from Fury, to which he states: “We have no quarrel with your people.”

Loki’s response exemplifies his arrogant attitude toward the people of Midgard, whom he intends to subjugate. He demonstrates his villainous intentions with a hint of Asgardian flair, quickly asserting his power to Fury as he equates humanity to ants that he can squash. Though he would later be outed as a “puny god” by Hulk, this line does a lot to establish Loki’s newfound power levels and the level of threat he poses to the Avengers’ first outing.

7 “You Think You Know Pain? He Will Make You Long For Something As Sweet As Pain.”

The Other – The Avengers

Loki’s interactions with The Other were in lieu of a direct audience with his patron, Thanos, in The Avengers. One of these interactions saw Loki treat Thanos’ mouthpiece with a certain impudence, stating that the Other is “but words” until Loki carries out his mission and commands the Chitauri army. The Other’s response was to inform Loki of the price of failure, preceding his haunting remark with the promise, “There will be no realm, no barren moon, no crevice where he cannot find you.

Although the Infinity Saga was not entirely fleshed out by the time The Avengers would debut Thanos, the Other’s statement established how terrifying the Mad Titan would be as the franchise’s arch-villain. His clandestine reference would stop short of naming Thanos, leaving it unknown who this exceedingly threatening figure might be for the majority of the movie. By this point, Loki had already experienced plenty of pain in the wake of Thor, but the implications of what the Other could be referencing are especially haunting and enough to silence the famously mouthy Loki.

6 “I Am Loki Of Asgard, And I Am Burdened With Glorious Purpose.”

Loki – The Avengers

Loki’s arrival on Earth saw him utter a line with which he has now become synonymous. He introduces himself in a typically grandiose manner to Nick Fury instead of simply attempting to wrest control of the Tesseract after swiftly dealing with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that guard it in an underground facility. He stops short of elaborating on what his “glorious purpose” is, but this would later become all too clear to Fury and the Avengers.

This extravagant introduction to Nick Fury is vastly improved by hindsight. After The Avengers brought Loki’s villainous streak to an end, he would go on to enjoy two redemption arcs, with his solo outing in Loki culminating in a decidedly more virtuous assumption of a throne and his “glorious purpose” as the god responsible for multiversal free will. Knowing where Loki’s journey takes him brings an all-new meaning to this line, as the burden of his purpose is more stark than it ever was.

5 “If It’s All The Same To You, I’ll Have That Drink Now.”

Loki – The Avengers

After halting the Chitauri invasion and closing the cosmic portal opened by Loki, the Avengers are faced with tying up one last loose end. Loki, incapacitated by Hulk’s brutal assault, attempts to climb to his feet before the Avengers revisit the top of Stark Tower and apprehend him in one of the MCU’s most iconic shots. Knowing that he is well and truly defeated, Loki accepts Tony’s previous offer of a drink.

His final line helped to humanize Loki before he would undergo his redemption arc. After spending the entirety of The Avengers positioning himself as superior to humankind and the titular team, his request for a stiff drink demonstrates his true persona as more down-to-Earth than he thus far let on. It is the perfect punctuation mark for the Avengers’ victory, though whether his request was granted before being muzzled is unclear.

4 “I’m Glad You Asked That Because I Wanted To Take This Time To Explain My Evil Plan…”

Ultron – Avengers: Age Of Ultron

After attempting to acquire Vibranium from Ulysses Klaue, final-form Ultron and his two superpowered minions – Wanda and Pietro Maximoff – are finally confronted by Tony Stark and the Avengers. Tony and his nefarious creation exchange witty one-liners before Tony demands “What’s the Vibranium for?” Ultron’s sarcastic response then immediately preceded him attacking Tony, rather than following through with the statement.

Although Ultron’s witty remarks may have been a sticking point for many, there is no denying that he had his moments. This is one of his funnier lines as it flies in the face of action movie conventions wherein the villain inexplicably divulges their entire plan to the heroes. Given this would be useful information to the Avengers, Ultron knows better than to show his hand and simply attacks his creator, proving that he is smarter than a typical James Bond villain while also tacitly acknowledging his own villainy.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Earth’s Mightiest must reunite and work with newcomers Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to battle a new antagonist Ultron, who receives an all-new origin story while dealing with a new level of inner conflict amongst the team. Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch may not necessarily agree with The Avengers and initially blame Tony Stark for creating the new villain and the death of their parents. Avengers: Age of Ultron was directed and written by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige for Marvel Studios. The movie was released on April 13, 2015, followed by its eventual sequels, Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

3 “Worthy? How Could You Be Worthy? You’re All Killers.”

Ultron – Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Ultron’s physical introduction to the MCU followed the now-iconic scene in which the Avengers lightheartedly attempt to lift Mjolnir in turns. When most Avengers fail to do so, Thor states that it is because they are “not worthy.” Ultron then interjects as he shambles into the room using scrappy armor before accusing the team of all being killers.

The Russo brothers have said that Captain America was always worthy to lift Mjolnir, which means they believe he was pretending to struggle in this movie scene.

The line would exemplify the motif of Tony Stark’s guilt, fittingly indicating that Earth might be better off if Earth’s Mightiest Heroes weren’t enticing cataclysmic events or, in Tony’s case, sparking them. Ultron was, of course, hellbent on destroying all of humanity, but all the Avengers also have blood on their hands. Thankfully for Thor, who has thousands of years of battles to his name, it doesn’t seem as though a high kill count counts against him in Mjolnir’s worthiness clause.

2 “Perfectly Balanced, As All Things Should Be.”

Thanos – Avengers: Infinity War

Thanos’ character-defining line came in a flashback in Avengers: Infinity War as Gamora reflects on meeting Thanos for the first time. This moment sees Thanos rounding up the people of Zen-Whoberi, massacring half with his Chitauri soldiers while he bequeaths Gamora with a double-bladed switchblade. He tasks her with balancing the blade on her finger, uttering the line before he diverts her gaze from the slaughter. Gamora would later attempt to use the same switchblade to kill Thanos, in vain.

The line comes with impossibly sinister undertones as Zehoberei are murdered in the background, but establishes Thanos as one of the MCU’s foremost sympathetic villains. His motives are summed up in a single line, setting out Thanos’ villainous designs before he goes on to elaborate on Titan. The line is now iconic and synonymous with Thanos, even going on to spawn several memes.

1 “I Am Inevitable.”

Thanos – Avengers: Endgame

Thanos’ victory felt all too possible in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War‘s shock ending, making this line especially spine-tingling.

The Battle of Earth was one of the MCU’s most memorable sequences, culminating in Tony Stark’s death as he uses the Infinity Stones to snap Thanos and his army out of existence. This was preceded by a desperate tussle between Stark and Thanos, with Stark slipping the Infinity Stones into his own nanotech gauntlet without Thanos realizing. As Thanos bats him away, he attempts to snap his fingers while gleefully stating that he is “inevitable,” though this time his snap is fruitless.

Until that moment, however, Thanos did have a point. The Mad Titan proved to be a nearly insurmountable threat despite the incredible effort the Avengers had put into defeating him. Time Travel; the might of the MCU’s most powerful heroes like Captain Marvel, Wanda, and Doctor Strange; and an army of superpowered individuals were still not enough to stop Thanos from getting his hands on the gauntlet. Thanos’ victory felt all too possible in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War‘s shock ending, making this line especially spine-tingling.
