Toy Story 5 will bring Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) back for a new adventure alongside the rest of the toys, and there are a couple of paths the story can take. Back in 1995, Toy Story arrived to not just kick off Pixar’s reign in the world of animation but to change the genre forever. Toy Story is the first entirely computer-animated feature film, and its immense success made way for a franchise that now covers not just movies but also short films, TV specials, comic books, and more.

The Toy Story movie saga supposedly ended in 2010 with Toy Story 3, which saw Andy going to college and giving all his toys to Bonnie so they could have a new life. However, the saga came back to life in 2019 with Toy Story 4, which gave another supposed definitive end to the story of Woody and Buzz with the former joining Bo Peep as a “lost toy” and Buzz staying with Bonnie and the rest of the toys. Now, the saga is coming back one more time with a fifth movie, planned for a 2026 release.

Toy Story 5 is coming in 2026, but fans are still debating if the third or fourth movie had the best ending.

What’s known about Toy Story 5 so far is that it will bring Woody and Buzz back, there will be an army of Buzz Lightyear toys, and the toys will face the rise of technology as kids become more interested in tablets and more and less interested in toys. Aside from that, plot details about Toy Story 5 are unknown, but there are different theories on where the story could lead.

Jessie Is The New Leader Of Bonnie’s Toys, Not Buzz
Jessie Becomes Bonnie’s New Favorite Toy
Close
Since Toy Story, Woody has been the favorite toy, a spot he had to share with Buzz when he was given to Andy on his birthday. Woody was still a favorite in Toy Story 2 when Al McWhiggin set eyes on him, and in Toy Story 3 when Bonnie took him home. Woody wasn’t exactly a favorite toy anymore in Toy Story 4, which was part of the reason why he decided to part ways and stay with Bo Peep as a Lost Toy, leaving the spot of favorite and leader toy in Bonnie’s room.
The expected new favorite toy and leader would be Buzz, but Bonnie isn’t Andy. Instead, fans on Reddit have theorized that Jessie will be Bonnie’s favorite toy and will lead the rest of the toys right before technology messes with their dynamic. Jessie might not exactly have the best leadership skills, which would lead her and Buzz to find Woody.

Buzz & Jessie Contact Woody Through Bonnie’s iPad
Technology Can Be On Their Side
Close
The popularity of technology, especially tablets and other gadgets used to entertain kids, will be a key point in the story of Toy Story 5. The toys will be forced to fight to maintain their spot and popularity with Bonnie as she becomes more interested in technology, but this can also be useful for the toys. Whatever issues technology will bring to the toys, there will surely be an even bigger problem they will face that will require re-teaming with Woody and possibly Bo Peep and other Lost Toys too – the problem is how to contact Woody.
If Bonnie gets an iPad, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest could use it to find and contact Woody. The toys could track the carnival and, if Woody somehow has access to a tablet as well, they could find a way to directly communicate and re-team – after all, in a world where toys come to life, anything can happen.

The Toys Will Become Collector’s Items Thanks To Technology
A Bit Of A Callback To Toy Story 2
Close
The popularity of tablets and more among kids leads to a loss of interest in toys and other non-digital forms of entertainment. This might lead to Bonnie not only stopping playing with Jessie and the rest of the toys, but also to them having a less than ideal fate. Instead of being donated, like Andy did with them in Toy Story 3, the toys might end up becoming very valuable and thus collector’s items, similar to what happened to Woody in Toy Story 2 when he was taken by Al.

As a toy without an owner, Woody has freedom that the rest don’t, so he’s not really at risk of becoming a collector’s item (again) unless he makes himself seen. Woody, then, can learn about the toys becoming collector’s items either on the news or through word of mouth, sending him on a quest to rescue his friends and free them, maybe even bringing them with him and the rest of the Lost Toys.

The Carnival Brings Woody Back To Town
Woody Can Visit His Old Friends
Close
In Toy Story 4, the toys get lost in a traveling carnival during a road trip with Bonnie and her family. At the end of Toy Story 4, the Lost Toys, led by Bo Peep and Woody, find a new purpose in traveling with the carnival and helping prize toys find owners. Unlike Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys, Woody will get to travel a lot and continue helping other toys, but this also means that he can return to his hometown at some point.
Woody could take some time to visit his old friends, who could be in the middle of fighting against technology or another problem.
A popular theory on Reddit suggests the carnival will return to the town where Bonnie and her family live, thus bringing Woody back. Woody could take some time to visit his old friends, who could be in the middle of fighting against technology or another problem. Of course, whether he decides to return to Bonnie’s room or bring other toys with him to the carnival is unclear.

Andy Visits The Carnival
Andy & Woody At The Same Place, At The Same Time

Woody now traveling with the carnival brings many possibilities for Toy Story 5, including an unexpected potential reunion with Andy. It’s possible that the carnival could be near Andy’s college and he could decide to go there with his friends. Woody would absolutely recognize his former owner, but he might not be able to reunite with him or even make himself noticeable. Another popular Reddit theory suggests there will be an evil carnival toy getting in the way between Woody and Andy, perhaps wanting to be picked by Andy.
Of course, there would have to be more to the mean toy’s story and his dynamic with Woody to want to stop him from reuniting with Andy, and the mean one might not even be interested in being owned by Andy. Woody might even have to fight technology to get Andy’s attention, which could be quite heartbreaking for the friendly cowboy.

Technology Leads Buzz & Company To Become Lost Toys
Buzz & The Rest Might Join Woody & Bo Peep
Close
The rise of technology and digital forms of entertainment for kids can lead not just to a loss of interest in toys but also to their disposal. Bonnie could choose tablets and more to play over her toys, not caring anymore if her toys are still there or not. As mentioned above, the toys might not be donated again and, instead, they will be thrown away. As Buzz and company already know what awaits in the trash thanks to the most shocking scene in Toy Story 3, they will find a way to escape, thus becoming Lost Toys.
This could lead them to find the carnival and Woody, either officially joining him and Bo Peep as Lost Toys or asking them to help them find a new owner – after all, that’s what they do now. This would give Woody and Buzz one more adventure together, but the ending could either be heartwarming if they all become Lost Toys and travel with the carnival or if they are separated again.

All The Toys Get New, Different Owners
Time To Move On For Everyone
Close
There’s another alternative to Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys if they are replaced by technology, and it could involve becoming a Lost Toy for a while or not. Supposing the toys find Woody and company and become Lost Toys looking for a home, Buzz and company could end up with different owners, thus parting ways for the first time and for good, officially marking the end of an era for Andy and Bonnie’s beloved toys.
Bonnie’s parents could choose to donate the toys to other people or schools, but this time they won’t end up in the same home or school.
Another way this could happen involves entirely skipping the step of being a Lost Toy. Following Andy’s steps, Bonnie’s parents could choose to donate the toys to other people or schools, but this time they won’t end up in the same home or school. The toys parting ways would be tough to watch, but this could make way for spinoffs (either movies, short films, or specials) about the lives of each toy in their new homes.

The Army Of Buzz Lightyears Is Due To The Toy’s Anniversary
Buzz’s Anniversary Will Be Big
Close
One of the few things revealed about Toy Story 5 is an army of Buzz Lightyear toys, shown in concept art for the film. This is reminiscent of Toy Story 2, where Buzz met other Buzz Lightyear toys at Al’s Toy Barn and one temporarily took his place. At the time of writing, it’s unknown what the role of the army of Buzz Lightyear toys in the story will be, but a Reddit theory suggests it’s all about celebrating these action figures.
The author explains that Toy Story 5 could see the 15th anniversary of the Buzz Lightyear action figures, which hit shelves in 1995, so the toy company released a commemorative version of the original toy. What Buzz could need many other Buzz Lightyear action figures for is unknown, especially as they would think they are real space rangers.

Andy Will Get The Toys Back For His Kids
Andy Will Have Something To Give To His Kids
Close
There’s still hope that Andy will return in some way in Toy Story 5, and as the timeline hasn’t been entirely clear, the sequel could take a time jump. Now a couple more years into the future, a grown-up Andy could return now with his own kids, and might be looking to get his toys back. However, that obviously won’t be an easy task, as Bonnie might not have the toys anymore, and it wouldn’t look good to take them back from her after donating them in Toy Story 3.
This could explain the army of Buzz Lightyears, with Andy getting one for his kids and his old toys learning about it and wanting to reunite with him.
It could also be that Andy wants to find toys like the ones he had and not exactly the ones he used to own. This could explain the army of Buzz Lightyears, with Andy getting one for his kids and his old toys learning about it and wanting to reunite with him. However, now that Woody has moved on with the Lost Toys and the rest with Bonnie, there could be a conflict with what the toys really want to do.

Woody Will Finally Talk To Andy
Woody Has One Final Surprise For Andy
Close
At this point, it’s very possible that the Toy Story film saga will continue beyond Toy Story 5, but if the latter is the end of it, it could end big by having Woody talking to Andy. So far, the only time a toy has directly spoken to a human was in the first movie, when Woody talked to Sid so he would stop torturing toys. In Toy Story 3, Woody said goodbye to Andy as he drove away, so he didn’t exactly get to say a proper goodbye.
Whether Andy is looking for toys like the ones he had for his kids, he visits the carnival, or any other way in which he could return in Toy Story 5, Woody could use this chance to give his story with Andy proper closure. The big mystery in this theory is how Andy would react, as a talking toy would freak anyone out, so if Toy Story 5 goes on this path, it will have to do so very carefully.
