Though The Catcher Was a Spy was released fairly recently, it never received much attention, making it an underrated find for Netflix audiences. The Catcher Was a Spy showcases the real experiences of the professional baseball player Moe Berg, who left the Boston Red Sox to become a spy in World War II. Berg was known for being incredibly smart and speaking several languages, leading him to be hired by the Office of Strategic Services. The movie depicts the tense situations that Berg would have entered while infiltrating Nazi-occupied areas, which keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
While The Catcher Was a Spy did not receive a very wide release and garnered only a 32% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, many audience members actually praised the film. Audience reviews seem to agree that Paul Rudd is as likable as ever and believable in the lead role. Likewise, the movie sheds light on a story that many people may not be familiar with, making it the perfect way to gain some historical knowledge while also being entertained.

Unlike many war movies which portray the real stories of real people, Fury is not about real historical figures, but rather about the general experiences of tank crews in WWII. However, director David Ayer still paid special attention to remaining as historically accurate as possible to display a level of truth as to what the real men in this situation would have experienced. This also means that the movie does not shy away from some more gruesome moments, making it more appropriate for adults rather than the whole family.

The 2014 Angelina Jolie-directed drama Unbroken tells the incredible true story of an American Olympian who was captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war in 1943. Louis Zamperini was an American runner who competed in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin before later joining the United States Army as a bombardier. After Zamperini’s plane crashes into the ocean, he and a crewmate are captured by the Japanese Army and sent to prisoner-of-war camps where Zamperini is treated terribly. Unbroken, then, primarily focuses on his courageous effort to survive against all odds.
The real Louie Zamperini lived until he was 97 years old, passing away in July 2014, just six months before the December 2014 release of Unbroken.
Jack O’Connell’s performance as Louis Zamperini is bold and inspiring, and it is aided by Jolie’s direction. The movie also received several awards and nominations, including three Oscar nominations. The American Film Institute also named Unbroken as one of its top ten films of the year, proving that it is certainly a worthwhile watch for any fan of war films. Will (2024)
The Belgian War Drama Explores The Consequences Of One Man’s Actions
Will is a 2024 Belgian World War II film that deals with themes of rebellion, complicity, and consequences through the lens of one young police officer in Antwerp. Will centers on Wilfried Wils, a police officer attempting to do his job under Nazi occupation who makes difficult choices in the fight against the Nazis. Through Wil’s alternating decisions to rebel against the Nazis in some circumstances and keep quiet in others, the film explores the difficult situations that average people went through during the war just to stay alive, while grappling with the real consequences of those actions.
The film received positive reviews, scoring 75% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, but some viewers criticized the level of violence shown throughout the movie. Due to its graphic subject matter and depictions, Will may not be the movie for everyone, but, on some level, its ability to make audiences uncomfortable is entirely the point. In refusing to sanitize the events that people lived through during WWII, Will‘s message is made even stronger.

Midway is a great World War II movie that features plenty of A-list actors and exciting action sequences while still telling a true story. While many World War II movies choose to focus on the events occurring in Europe, Midway shifts attention to the Pacific Theater of WWII, allowing audiences to learn more about the less-talked-about battles. Additionally, despite director Roland Emmerich’s usual prowess for overly dramatic disaster films, Midway has been praised for being largely historically accurate. Though, of course, Emmerich’s action sequences still keep audiences entertained.
The film highlights the troubles the US faced leading up to the Battle of Midway and the race to decode the Japanese Army’s messages, which allowed the US to finally gain the upper hand.
Focusing on the US’ response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Midway stars Ed Skrein as bomber pilot Dick Best, Patrick Wilson as intelligence officer Edwin Layton, Nick Jonas as Aviation Machinist’s Mate Bruno Gaido, Woody Harrelson as Admiral Chester Nimitz, alongside other well-known actors who portrayed real people involved in the battles depicted. The film highlights the troubles the US faced leading up to the Battle of Midway and the race to decode the Japanese Army’s messages, which allowed the US to finally gain the upper hand.

The Bombardment (2022)
The Film Is Based On Events In Denmark During The Final Days Of WWII
The Danish film The Bombardment, also called The Shadow in My Eye, is an impressive World War II drama that centers largely on the lives of several children, which is put in contrast with the Royal Air Force’s attempts to bomb a nearby Gestapo headquarters. While taking inspiration from real events, including Operation Carthage and the March 1945 bombing of the Institut Jeanne d’Arc school, the movie adds depth by creating fictional children to follow. Through the events and trauma experienced by the children, the movie is able to show the effects of the war on the innocent.
The Bombardment largely serves as a study of the characters portrayed and the emotional impact that the war has on them, and the film is held up by the great performances of its actors. While the film never received much attention, having been distributed in the US only by Netflix, The Bombardment holds an outstanding 100% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie’s audience approval rating falls not far behind, and critics and audiences alike praised the film’s depiction of the tragedy and horror of war.

The 2022 World War II drama Operation Mincemeat is a dramatization of the operation of the same name that was used to cover the 1943 invasion of Sicily by Allied forces. The movie stars veteran actor Colin Firth in the leading role of Ewan Montagu who helps the British government trick the Nazis by creating a fake persona and documents to mislead them about the invasion. The true story of Operation Mincemeat is impressive on its own, and the movie adds just enough drama to really keep audiences entertained.
Operation Mincemeat was well-received by critics and audiences, as it is able to balance slight humor with the drama of the situation. As is the case with several unlikely events during WWII, Operation Mincemeat was seen as an example of real life being stranger than fiction due to the unlikeliness of the plan. However, the movie brings the true story to light through the performances of its versatile stars and John Madden’s direction.

Director Tyler Perry’s most recent film, The Six Triple Eight, was released on Netflix in December 2024 and received immediate attention. The film tells the true story of the 6888th Battalion of the Women’s Army Corps, who sorted 17 million letters that had gotten backed up over two years in just 90 days. Kerry Washington leads the cast of The Six Triple Eight as Major Charity Adams, who is a strong and forceful leader, yet someone that the women all look up to, creating several heartfelt moments throughout the movie.
Despite poor reviews, it quickly soared to the top of Netflix’s most popular charts, proving that interest in the story abounded. Given that the story of the heroic women of The Six Triple Eight is one that has long been ignored, it is no surprise that audiences are now jumping at the chance to see such representation. Additionally, while making the film, Perry even showed the movie to the real inspiration for one of the characters, and she was moved by the respectful and courageous portrayal of her wartime efforts.

In 2014, George Clooney directed and starred in The Monuments Men, which dramatizes the actions of men in the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Section Unit. While many war dramas are very somber and difficult to watch, The Monuments Men takes a slightly lighter, even comedic, tone at times, making it a good World War II movie for people who do not want to watch something quite so heavy. However, despite the use of comedic aspects, the film never fails to highlight the reality behind the movie. The men portrayed were heroes, just like other soldiers.

Steven Spielberg’s 1993 World War II drama, Schindler’s List, is often considered one of the best films of all time. Schindler’s List won seven Oscars, including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay, along with winning and being nominated for awards from numerous other ceremonies. The main character Oskar Schindler, played by Liam Neeson, and villain Amon Goth, played by Ralph Fiennes, are also considered some of the best film characters of all time and are based on real historical figures.
Along with the film’s plot revolving around Schindler’s employment of over 1,000 Jewish people during World War II, which saved their lives, Schindler’s List also makes use of larger symbols throughout. In particular, Schindler’s List was shot largely in black and white, but the appearance of the girl in the red coat draws attention to the horror of her death and Schindler’s growing conviction to prevent the Nazis from killing further. Spielberg does not shy away from the atrocities committed by the Nazis while also displaying Schindler as a very complex man.
