10 MCU Characters Who Will Benefit Most From A Reboot After Secret Wars

Avengers: Secret Wars
will end the Multiverse Saga, and with that there is expected to be some kind of reset in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
, which is sorely needed for some characters. The MCU’s humble beginnings back in 2008 is a distant memory, and now this behemoth franchise stands out as a global phenomenon. However, along with the exponential growth and billion dollar movies, the MCU has whirled somewhat out of control, with the Multiverse Saga having more than its fair share of dull moments and disappointing character moments.

Thankfully, the Multiverse Saga is just a stepping stone to transition the MCU from the era of the Avengers into a new phase which is expected to have brand-new hero teams like The Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and a new Avengers team. However, Avengers: Secret Wars also presents an opportunity to hit the reset button on some familiar characters, who could get a much-needed update. Whether that means a new casting, or simply a shift in direction, the MCU is ready for a change.

Hulk

The Character Must Be Intimidating Again

Close

Hulk has had an interesting journey alongside Bruce Banner. Considering the character was already rebooted for the MCU from the depiction played by Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo has been a hit since he appeared in the MCU. However, the latest developments in their character arc has left Banner and Hulk combined into one Smart Hulk, and honestly, the character is kind of boring compared to the rage fueled Hulk, and the ultra-calm Banner.

Between the MCU, the DCEU, and standalone superhero movies, Marvel and DC have had some of the darkest and most impactful dark endings among films.

It is likely Hulk will persist into the next phase, considering how much has been set up in the Hulk family with a mysterious son, his cousin turning into another Hulk, and several of his villains set to return. However, if Hulk is going to come out victorious, he needs to get that rage and power back. Secret Wars could finally reset the character and at least make Smart Hulk into something more intimidating.

Iron Man

Too Cool Not To Be Seen Again In The MCU

Close

Tony Stark is dead, and that should not be changed. The hero who stood out as the heart of the MCU had one of the best character arcs in any franchise, let alone a Superhero movie. However, the character of Iron Man is too cool a concept to never see again in the MCU. With Avengers: Secret Wars, there is a chance to finally get an Iron Man replacement, whether that is Riri Williams as Ironheart, Morgan Stark, or someone else.

There could even be unique ways to take a protégé like Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, and have him step up as the next Iron Man, although with Holland signing on to a multi-picture deal as Spider-Man, that seems less likely. On top of this, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to play Doctor Doom, having him face an Iron Man variant could be an incredible moment.

Scarlet Witch

She Is In Desperate Need Of A Reset

Close

Elizabeth Olsen is a spectacular actress, and her MCU character, Wanda Maximoff, has consistently been battered, bruised, and turned into a monster. As a result of losing everyone she loved, her trauma led her to do some questionable things. But then, when she got her hands on the Darkhold, the book turned her into a true villain. Whether she is alive or dead after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she is in desperate need of a reset.

It would be great to have Wanda return, realize the full potential of her Scarlet Witch powers, and use these to be the hero.

And, considering the character has already been seen in numerous universes living happily with her children, it seems that Wanda does get a happy ending sometimes. It would be great to have Wanda return, realize the full potential of her Scarlet Witch powers, and use these to be the hero. If anyone deserves a happy ending and a reset, it’s Wanda.

7

Vision

He Deserves A Reset Just As Much As Wanda

Close

Wanda’s beloved partner, Vision, suffered a terrible fate in Avengers: Infinity War, when he was first sacrificed by Wanda to save the world, and that plan was immediately thwarted by Thanos, who reversed time and then ripped the Mind Stone from his head. Since then, the character has appeared again, but in WandaVision, he was a part of Wanda’s illusion, while SWORD used his remains to create White Vision. So, while he has technically been reset in a couple of ways, none of these are truly Vision.

Vision was a hero who came to life back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he only began to live when he met Wanda Maximoff and decided to run away with her. But, their romance was cut short when the Black Order arrived on Earth. If Wanda gets a reset, it would be worthwhile to bring back her beloved Vision, and let the Maximoff family have a real future as one of the MCU’s most powerful families.

6

Black Panther

The Hero’s Title Could Remain With Shuri Or Be Passed On To T’Challa Jr.

Close

Chadwick Boseman was an incredible choice for the role of Black Panther, but when he tragically passed away, the role sat vacant for some time. Since then, T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, has stepped up to take over the mantle, and a son was revealed living secretly outside the Kingdom of Wakanda. So, there are people ready to assume the role, but we have seen precious little of them.

If Shuri is going to continue to be the Black Panther, it’s time to get a proper outing with her as the character, and if the future is set to see T’Challa Jr. follow in his father’s footsteps, it would be great to see this play out after Avengers: Secret Wars. Black Panther is a powerful hero, hailing from a nation so advanced it essentially appears to be magical. This story and character are essential for the future of the MCU, so they need to have a strong depiction.

5

Kang

Using Time Travel, They Could Explore Multiple Versions Of Kang

Close

Kang was being set up to be the biggest threat to the MCU, with Avengers: Doomsday initially operating under the title, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Phase 4 worked hard to set up this eventuality, but unfortunately, due to external circumstances, the character was retired early. However, it would still be exciting to see Kang step up as a villain that threatens the MCU.

While the Mutliverse version of the character would need significant changes, there is a way for Kang to still provide a threat with multiple versions: time travel. Kang could travel along the Sacred Timeline, inserting himself at set points, and causing chaos. It would need to be a big change from before, but it could be interesting to see it play out on the big screen.

4

Thor

It Might Be Time For A New Actor To Play Thor

Close

Chris Hemsworth has been a part of the MCU since his debut film came out in 2011. Now, he stands out as one of the few original Avengers remaining, and he has had no less than four films where he starred. Despite this, the tone and personality of the character has experienced huge changes over the course of these films. And, in his most recent outing, Thor: Love & Thunder, he felt like a caricature of himself.

The God of Thunder has a lot of potential, but with Hemsworth getting tired of playing the role, it could be time for someone new to step up as Thor. This could allow a different version of the character to get a shot on the big screen, and help to move beyond the original Avengers instead of having some characters linger for just a moment too long.

3

Nick Fury

Fury Is A Pivotal Character For Heroes

Close

Nick Fury has been a huge part of the MCU since the start, with him coming to recruit Tony Stark in Iron Man. However, Fury has also taken quite the beating over the course of the MCU. Not only has he been turned to dust, beaten and bruised, permanently scarred, and lost almost everyone he was ever close to, but he’s tired. For an undisclosed period of time, Fury decided to sub out and let a Skrull take his place on Earth, so its clear he’s getting a little too old for this stuff.

However, Fury is a pivotal character for heroes in the Marvel Universe. He helps to recruit and bring together these teams, provides expertise in espionage and training, and guides powered individuals to become superheros. If the MCU does hit the reset button after Avengers: Secret Wars, Fury is one person who could really benefit from a change.

2

Doctor Strange

A Reset Could Put Strange Back Into His Role As The Sorcerer Supreme

Close

Stephen Strange has had a rough ride in the MCU. Due to his own arrogance and ego, he suffered an intense injury in his debut appearance, that left him unable to perform in his role as a world-renowned neurosurgeon. Strange struggled with this for a long time, and he tried to find means to be made whole again, and eventually, he found something even better. Strange went on to study the mystic arts, and became an unimaginably powerful sorcerer and the Sorcerer Supreme, but this was short-lived.

After Strange disappeared in the blip, Wong became the new Sorcerer Supreme, and despite Strange returning, he is unsure how to settle back into life with so many changes. Strange may be a wise wizard after training in the mystic arts, but he still has his ego. However, a reset could put Strange back into his role as the Sorcerer Supreme, and that could in turn allow him to continue growing and realizing his full potential.

Captain Marvel

The Character Has No Future In The MCU Without A Change

Close

Carol Danvers is an intriguing character, and as Captain Marvel, she stands out as one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU. However, it’s no secret that a number of comic book movie fans have been highly negative about the character and their portrayal in the MCU. The movies were review bombed, and it wasn’t until films like The Marvels hit streaming platforms that people embraced the film and realized how fun and engaging it actually was.

It might make sense to recast the role, change the character in meaningful ways, or simply reset them in an effort to start over.

However, it’s hard to imagine the character has much of a future in the MCU without a change. It might make sense to recast the role, change the character in meaningful ways, or simply reset them in an effort to start over. If Avengers: Secret Wars is set to right some wrongs, and change the MCU in large ways, like rebooting characters, then Captain Marvel would make sense to get some changes.
