As a nearly 50-year-old franchise, the Star Wars fandom is one of the most prolific when it comes to fanfiction, particularly on the website Archive of Our Own (often shortened to AO3). Fanfiction has been a core part of fandom culture for countless years, and Star Wars has no shortage of it. While various websites, including YouTube itself, have previously housed Star Wars fanfiction, and continue to, AO3 has become something of a central hub for it, with the Star Wars fandom having amassed 271,545 total works on the site at the time of writing.

The following fanfictions are rated between AO3’s safest rating of “General” up to “Mature,” excluding only the “Explicit” category. From the very first Star Wars movie to the franchise’s most recent project, these stories focus on a wide variety of different characters and eras, which is why they have collected such a high volume of reads. First published over four years ago, “Deliver Us” by Bittodeath sees Jango Fett entrust five clones with the Jedi Order – but not just any of its members. Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has broken the Jedi Code before and has a familiarity with Jango’s Mandalorian culture thanks to his closeness with the Mandalorian Duchess Satine Kryze, is the only one Jango trusts to look after these five clones. These clones aren’t like the others, however; these five are Force sensitive, which makes their situation even more delicate – and dangerous.
Read Bittodeath’s Deliver Us on AO3
Bittodeath has cited the song “Deliver Us” from DreamWorks’ The Prince of Egypt soundtrack as inspiration for the story, particularly in relation to the clones. This story includes the use of Mando’a, which gives it a very grounded feeling in the culture and the lore of the characters and the greater Star Wars galaxy. With constant high stakes, this story explores how two very different groups of people will have to come together to save and protect the ones they love and care about, which has clearly resonated well with Star Wars fans.

“Duty Bound” by acuteneurosis is the third story in their series named “Don’t Look Back,” beginning with their fanfiction “Like Fire in Our Bones.” The story follows Leia as she accidentally manages to time travel to the Star Wars prequel trilogy era, having ended up at the Lars and Skywalker homestead on Tatooine with Shmi Skywalker and Cliegg Lars. Leia is thus given a chance to change the galaxy because of what she knows about her own family, and having lost her family and friends back in her own life, she endeavors to do so.
Read acuteneurosis’ Duty Bound on AO3
“Duty Bound,” as the third story, picks up around the end of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, just after Anakin’s been Knighted by the Jedi Order. The most highly praised aspects of this story have to do with its deep dive into the politics and economics of the galaxy, particularly during the prequel trilogy era, as well as the depictions of grief, mourning, and the motivation to move forward in the face of it all. For anyone who’s ever wanted to stop Anakin from falling to the dark side, this story is a beautifully unique option.

“Dominoes” by meridianpony follows its titular characters, the Domino Squad, in the hours before they take their final test on Kamino – though their minds have been elsewhere. All five members of the Domino Squad have visions of everything that happens after passing the test together, up until all their own deaths. This information completely changes the way they move ahead together, the truth of it proven by the fact that they all remember exactly what happened to one another, and the names they had not yet given one another.
Read meridianpony’s Dominoes on AO3
Because this story sees the characters witnessing and experiencing their own deaths, it takes an intimate look at both the effects of PTSD and the strength of brotherhood. There’s also the moral dilemma of stepping in to save other clones’ lives when they know a battle’s about to go awry; trying to change fate never bodes well, and this is something these clones truly do understand. This is the perfect story for anyone who’s endeared to the clones, especially Domino Squad, and who wishes to see a galaxy where Fives didn’t die with the Order 66 secret.

Rooted heavily in Star Wars Legends lore, “The 212th Attack Battalion’s Guide To Staging Rescues” follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and his battalion, the 212th, led by the fan-favorite Commander Cody. While pursuing General Grievous during the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan, Cody, and the battalion chase Grievous into a cave, and they wake up to realize they’re all younger and smaller. A chance meeting with Jaster Mereel and Jango Fett informs them that they’ve traveled 30 years into the past, with no clear way of how to return to their own time.

This is yet another fun time-travel story from the Star Wars fandom, this time focusing on the tight-knit relationship between Obi-Wan, Cody, and their battalion. The “Mature” rating reflects mostly violence and other heavier themes, as noted appropriately in the tags on AO3’s website. It’s also worth noting, however, that the authors have indicated that there is an NSFW scene included in this story, but its appearance is properly labeled, should the reader prefer to skip over it. Those who love the 212th battalion would no doubt have fun with this one.

“Oya Mand’alor!” by Cloud__Chaser picks up where The Mandalorian season 2 leaves off, with Din Djarin back to bounty hunting in a ship borrowed from Boba Fett. After finishing a job, he discovers an ancient blue artifact on his belt, which he accidentally activates by letting his tears of grief – shed for Grogu’s absence – spill onto it. This causes him to be thrust far into the past, and he lands in the middle of an attack that risks the life of a child. The child Din saves is none other than Jango Fett, bringing Din into the story of Star Wars Legends’ Mandalorians.
Read Cloud__Chaser’s Oya Mand’alor! on AO3
Cloud__Chaser’s story is another tribute to Star Wars Legends, particularly the Mandalorian culture cultivated there. The life debt Jango and his father, Jaster Mereel, now owe to Din is what drives the story, bringing these characters of similar origin together excitingly. Given that Din knows Boba Fett well at this point, and Jango is a Mandalorian foundling just like Din himself, this story expands upon the lovely idea of the two crossing paths and exchanging what they know about one another.

Continuing the trend of time-travel stories is “Old Many Luke” by scarletjedi, which sees Luke end up amongst refugees rescued by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars. When Luke uses the Force to save a young child from being crushed by a ship, Obi-Wan takes notice and brings him in for questioning. Luke, placing hope in the idea of the Force bringing him to where he needed to be, reveals his true identity and continues on the path set before him with his father and his old, or young, Jedi Master.
Read scarletjedi’s Old Man Luke on AO3
Given the fact “Old Man Luke” was originally published on AO3 in December 2016, the original inspiration for this story came about before Luke’s story continued in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The author, scarletjedi, notes this in an author’s note at the beginning of the story, informing readers that their story will not be compliant with The Last Jedi since their story took shape before that movie even came out. This story covers a classic amount of Skywalker “family drama” and uses the clearly beloved time-travel trope in doing so.

“Of Queens, Knights, and Pawns” by chancecraz follows the Star Wars fandom’s love for time-travel fix-its in a unique way: having Leia’s consciousness from Star Wars: The Force Awakens wake up in her body from A New Hope. It picks up when Leia is about to be questioned by Darth Vader, which still gives her a chance to save her home world – and all else that’s destroyed in the wake of the Skywalker legacy. Leia has a chance to save the galaxy, but to begin, she has to face the one person she could never truly forgive: her birth father.
Read chancecraz’s Of Queens, Knights, and Pawns on AO3
Originally published in November 2016, this fanfiction’s earliest chapters predate the rest of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, causing this story to act as something of a time capsule to how audiences saw the franchise nearly a decade ago. The first chapter sees Leia confront Vader, and the conversation that ensues is utterly fascinating. For anyone who has a strong connection to the Skywalker family, this journey of grief, pain, and love is extremely compelling – and evidently well-loved by other fans.

Ariel_Sojourner’s take on a time-travel story, “Back From The Future: Episode VI The Clone Wars,” sees Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader end up in the Clone Wars era, beginning with their presence at the Battle of Umbara. The duo comes to the aid of the 501st as they struggle underneath the cruel General Pong Krell’s lead. What ensues is a hilarious debate between the clones about the resemblance between Luke and Vader as father and son, along with plenty of other adventures that adopt beloved parts of the Star Wars universe.
Read Ariel_Sojourney’s Back From the Future: Episode VI The Clone Wars on AO3
A major appeal of this story is the exploration of Luke and Vader’s father-son relationship, which didn’t have proper time to breathe due to Vader’s sacrifice in Return of the Jedi. What’s also rich are the interactions between these characters and those of the prequel era, particularly the kind way in which they treat the clones. This fanfiction, though certainly still tackling some tough topics, is a fun exploration of the time-travel genre and these characters that many Star Wars enthusiasts have come to love.

The title of “Supreme Chancellor Obi-Wan Kenobi” by stonefreeak doesn’t hide anything about its story: Obi-Wan becomes the chancellor of the Galactic Republic. In a galaxy where Jedi technically have their own senatorial seats, a vote of no-confidence is called to replace Palpatine with none other than Obi-Wan as chancellor, which upends Obi-Wan’s entire life – and Palpatine’s sinister plans. With Obi-Wan already holding on to more responsibilities and burdens than any person should ever have, even a Jedi, this new position presents Obi-Wan with an entirely new layer of challenges, stress, and potentially an opportunity to save the galaxy.
Read stonefreeak’s Supreme Chancellor Obi-Wan Kenobi on AO3
This story is certainly a hit with anyone who loves Obi-Wan Kenobi and, as the tags on AO3 suggest, believes that Obi-Wan is in dire need of a break. Because the simple election of Obi-Wan as chancellor presents an opportunity to keep things like Order 66 from ever happening, “Supreme Chancellor Obi-Wan Kenobi” offers its readers a rich opportunity to explore a potential path to the galaxy being saved at Obi-Wan’s hands. This story also, sensibly, covers some of the political aspects of the Clone Wars, making it a great option for anyone who finds that element particularly fascinating.

In Ariana Deralte’s “How a Romance Novel Saved the Galaxy,” the Mandalorians quickly learn that their ancient enemy, the Jedi, are not only not as bad as they thought they were, but are also the exact type many of them look for in a lifelong partner. This story reads much like a romcom in its own right, treating what sounds to be an unserious premise with an appropriate amount of severity. Taking place long before the Clone Wars, this is a unique take on the what-if question of the nature of the Mandalorians’ rivalry with the Jedi.
Read Ariana Deralte’s “How a Romance Novel Saved the Galaxy” on AO3
“How a Romance Novel Saved the Galaxy” offers a blend of Star Wars Legends content, with the inclusion of Jaster Mereel, Mando’a, and more, with Disney’s Star Wars canon, making for a story that truly fits each potential reader’s taste. Given that there are eventual relationships of the romantic variety formed later on, it’s always important to check tags on AO3 to be sure that a reader is ready for what the story gives them. In this case, however, it looks as if the Star Wars fandom has certainly approved everything this story has to offer.
