Marvel and DC may not have had the biggest year in terms of theatrical releases, but there were plenty of surprises throughout 2024. Since the Infinity Saga wrapped, Marvel’s MCU has been building towards the next big event in their lineup with the Multiverse Saga. And while the studio was releasing at least three movies a year at its peak, 2024 had just one theatrical release while multiple TV shows came out. Meanwhile, the Sony Marvel projects had their most prolific year yet with three separate releases.

At the same time, DC is in the process of jumpstarting the new DCU, which meant 2024 had no major entries from the central DC Universe. However, there was a major DC Elseworlds release with Joker: folie à Deux, and multiple TV releases. While 2025 promises to bring major releases to both the DCU and the MCU, it’s worth looking back at 2024 and the biggest and most shocking moments from all Marvel and DC projects over the course of the year.

Joker: Folie Á Deux Flipped The Original Movie’s Reception & Box Office On Its Head
Image via Warner Bros.
In 2019, Joker completely dominated the box office when the obscure and unique take on Gotham’s most terrifying villain became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, taking in well over the billion dollar mark at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). While this film appeared to get universal praise, both director Todd Phillips and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix made it clear at the time that the movie was intended as a solo project. However, the success led to a sequel being made, and this led to the disastrous Joker: folie à Deux.

While fans fell in love with Arthur Fleck in the original movie, the sequel made some huge changes to the story that the audience as a whole didn’t see coming. Despite the movie announcing it was a musical early on, this aspect of the film failed to land in the marketing of the movie. On top of that, the movie actually appeared to contradict and overwrite the original in ways that the audience was incredibly unhappy with. The result was a sequel that was slated by the audience and critics, and only managed to earn a fifth of the original’s box office (via Box Office Mojo), likely losing the studio many millions.

Superman & Lois Season 4 Contained 2 Superman Deaths, With One Being Permanent
The death of Superman is a spectacular event that marked a major milestone in the comics. However, when it was handled in the DCEU, it felt significantly less impactful with the character being brought back soon after, and the DCEU’s various other issues. Despite this, the TV series Superman & Lois decided to tackle the challenging storyline in their final season. And they didn’t just kill Superman once, they did it twice.
The show’s fourth season marked the end of the last part of the wider Arrowverse, and it needed to do something special to ensure the show’s legacy remained intact. By introducing characters like Doomsday, Lex Luthor, and including some other major surprises, the final season stands out as one of the best in the series, and managed to adapt many storylines that gave the show a final feeling. Including having Superman die as an old man at the end.

Batman: Resurrection Gave Batman 1989 A New Sequel Decades After The Series’ Ending
While Tim Burton’s Batman universe was born in 1989, and his final contribution to the series came a short time later in 1992s Batman Returns, the story has been revived in the aptly named Batman: Resurrection. This story actually takes the form of a novel written by John Jackson Miller, which covers the events between the 1989 movie and the 1992 sequel. The story deals with the aftermath of the Joker’s death, and introduces prominent characters to Gotham like Clayface and Hugo Strange.

On top of that, this surprising new addition to the Burtonverse was actually revealed to be the first chapter in a duology which will continue in 2025. The next book, titled Batman: Revolution, is expected to hit shelves everywhere in Fall 2025. Together, these two novels make up a whole new saga within the Batman films directed by Tim Burton, which may make it essential reading for fans of those early films.

Deadpool & Wolverine Gave 2 Fox X-Men Icons A Bright New Future
While Disney acquiring Fox led to a lot of new opportunities for the House of Mouse, one of the most interesting was how Marvel would choose to incorporate the reacquired heroes, the X-Men. Already, Deadpool 3 was in early stages of development when the deal was done, and with the news that Disney brought the X-Men home to Marvel, it became a huge priority to give Deadpool a story within the MCU.
However, no one could have foreseen that this would be the moment Hugh Jackman chose to return to a character that he retired in 2017 when he agreed to appear as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. Initially, the acquisition of Fox could have meant a new start for the X-Men, and wiping the slate of everything that came before, but now that the MCU has brought Wolverine back from the dead and Deadpool into the fold with knowledge of the Sacred Timeline, it looks like these characters have a long and fruitful life ahead of them in the MCU.

Batman: Caped Crusader Introduced A Brand New Batman For DC Animated Projects
The iconic voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, passed away in late 2022. After decades of being the definitive version of the animated character, projects which were set to include Conroy had to look elsewhere to continue their work. One project that was in development at the time was Batman: Caped Crusader, which hoped to act as a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series, delivering an earlier look at Gotham and the vigilante hero who steps up to clean the streets.

Without Conroy, the task for this show to connect to the audience and feature a version of the hero that was both familiar and distinct was an enormous challenge, but with the casting of Hamish Linklater in the leading role, they got the job done. Linklater’s performance appears to have some similarities with Conroy’s, namely with the change between the character of Bruce Wayne, and Batman, and it meant the series felt connected to the original show. While Conroy is irreplaceable, it’s great to have someone who could potentially stand out as the official voice of Batman in animated projects going forward.

Venom 3 Set Up Sony’s Future, And Kraven The Hunter Swiftly Shut It Down
Custom Image by Kai Young
As mentioned above, Sony had a big year for Marvel movies. But, despite having three movies releasing all within 2024, the future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has now been confirmed to be completely over. Admittedly, Venom was the only bearable part of the SSU, but even Venom: The Last Dance was riddled with issues that led to incredibly mixed to negative reviews. But confusingly, Venom 3 also appears to set up a lot of details for the future of the SSU, like Kraven appearing, and the symbiote surviving to find another host.
However, when Kraven the Hunter came out just under two months later, it laid the SSU to rest. Sony confirmed that Kraven would be the last movie focusing on these Spider-Man-related characters, and thus, the SSU was dead. While the SSU was struggling from the start, and the movies it released were largely ridiculed, it still came as a surprise after so many years that Sony simply quit.

The Penguin Finale Proved That The Underdog Villain Was A True Monster
In the Matt Reeves Batverse, which is now located in the DC Elseworlds of the DCU, The Batman spin-off, The Penguin, took audiences off guard with how excellent the whole show was. Sure, Oz Cobb is not the most impressive villain, and he may not be much to look at, but when Gotham is in turmoil, he sure knows how to grab hold of the opportunities that lie ahead. The show develops the character and sees both his worst and best moments, as he attempts to become the new crime boss of Gotham.

By the time the finale rolls around, Penguin appears to be somewhat likable. Sure, he has done terrible things, but he is also lonely, and feels ashamed because of hs looks. But when he achieves his goals, with the aid of his dear new friend Victor Aguilar, it comes as a complete shock what happens next. This finale cemented Oz’s place as a villain, and one of the most awful monsters in Gotham City.

Madame Web Promised New Spider-Heroes, But It Was All A Lie
Madame Web was the first film in the Sony Spider-Man Universe that actually promised to deliver a spider-hero to the SSU. While Peter Parker was tied up in the MCU, the SSU was on the road to creating its own branch of female spider-heroes, and the marketing actually looked solid. These suited-up heroes worked together with precision and skill, proving they could be a solid replacement for Parker in the SSU, while fighting another new spider-rival, who could also make these heroes appear even more powerful.
But, when Madame Web came out, and the first reports started rolling in, it became clear that Sony was lying. The truth is, while the movie is establishing a new spider-team, the heroes and the scenes where they appear in costume was all a vision which Cassandra Webb experienced. Beyond the vision, Cassandra is the only one with powers, and no costumes make it into the real world. Overall, everything that was promised in the trailer was exactly as much as was given in the movie, with barely a minute of these fully-realized heroes on screen together.

Agatha All Along Went Viral In The Queer Community & Beyond
While the MCU TV shows have been hit or miss, one show stood out as the least sensible choice for the MCU to adapt. After the success of WandaVision, and the popularity of the character played by Kathryn Hahn, the MCU began work on a new Agatha Harkness spin-off. On top of this, while the show was in development, it appeared as though the name was changing every couple of months. However, when Agatha All Along came out, it went viral.

While some of the MCU shows struggled to resonate with the audience, and find a fanbase, Agatha All Along became a queer icon. Not only did they cast Heartstopper star, Joe Locke, in a major role as Teen, who has som big surprises throughout the season, but they also included numerous queer relationships. And on top of that, the show starred a diverse cast of powerful women, with one young gay wizard tagging along. The show also managed to win over a lot of people outside the queer community, and stands out as one of the best entries in Marvel TV.

The Tomorrowverse Came To An Explosive End In Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part Three
Despite DC having very few movies releasing in 2024, there were major developments in the DC Animated Movie Universe as their second phase of movies came to an end with a three-part epic storyline. The Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths movies each last about 90 minutes, and they delivered a spectacular and explosive end to the Tomorrowverse. They also paid tribute to comic book legend George Pérez, who passed away in 2022, and actor Kevin Conroy, who was mentioned earlier, and who played an important role in the movies which he recorded prior to passing away.

In many ways, this version of the Crisis storyline outshone the DCEU’s attempt to create a multiverse, but it remains to be seen if the incoming DCU will be able to shine brighter than the animated counterparts that came before. With a new series like Creature Commandos, an animated TV series, it appears that the new franchise is a lot more diverse and expansive than its predecessor. With so much excitement seen in relatively small projects in 2024, it’s exciting to look forward at what could be next for Marvel and DC in 2025 and beyond.
