13 Going On 30 (2004)
Directed by Gary Winick
This sweet and charming film is part teen film, part romantic comedy. When 13-year-old Jenna (Jennifer Garner) suddenly wakes up as a 30-year-old magazine editor with a great apartment, her world understandably turns upside down. She seeks out her best friend, Matty (Mark Ruffalo), to try and make some sense of it all. As it turns out that they no longer seem to be friends in this reality, she tries to rebuild this seemingly lost connection. What’s worse, they both have some rather irritating other halves to contend with.
As the two start hanging out on a work project for Jenna it’s clear that there’s something there. They stroll through the streets of New York, reminiscing about simpler times and bonding over Razzles. With a strong foundation of friendship, they build a deeper connection that highlights just how much they’ve grown over the years. Though it didn’t even start off as a date, the two ended up kissing after playfully jumping off the swings. It was the definition of wholesome.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011)
Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have a very special kind of chemistry. So strong is their connection that they’ve made three movies together so far where they play on-screen love interests. Crazy, Stupid, Love and its great soundtrack sees Gosling as a slick womanizer, who scours his favorite bar for dates. With a tried and tested set of “moves” he has a very high success rate for casual flings. That is, until he gets shot down by Stone’s Hannah. A scenario that doesn’t sit well with him, it plants this girl firmly at the forefront of his mind.
When she shows up at the bar, soaking wet from the rain after a dramatic breakup, she just wants to “hook up with the hot guy from the bar”, but what follows is far more charming and wholesome. As the pair have awkward yet adorable banter, Cal shows Hannah his moves that include making the perfect drink and recreating the Dirty Dancing lift. But instead of exploring the physical side, they end up falling for each other in a much more real way. With conversation flowing through the night and lots of genuine laughter, the two end up finding something much more real than a one-night stand.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Directed by Gil Junger
Young love can be so powerful, especially if it’s spawned from hate. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger have sizzling chemistry as Kat and Patrick, as they spar, fight, and flirt. Part of the genre of teen films that is based on classic literature, this comedy romance was inspired by Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. With twists and turns aplenty, Kat and Patrick end up spending the most adorable day date together after she busts him out of detention.

Directed by Marc Webb

This bittersweet cult classic tells the story of how a relationship goes from its initial loved-up stages to a sad and dejected end. As Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel) meet and fall for each other, there’s a lot of quirky tension and lingering looks between the two. As the audience gets to experience some of the same scenes through different perspectives, it’s interesting to see how a moment that once seemed so joyful can actually hide a lot of details that once seemed innocuous.
But, even though Tom and Summer don’t work out, their first date is one of the best ones in recent times. As the two traverse Ikea, they recreate some sweet scenes of playing house, with plenty of chemistry and playful humor. The simplicity of this date is what made it so real and romantic. Like so many love lessons in 500 Days of Summer, the date proves that if the spark is there, couples don’t need candlelight dinners or bouquets of flowers.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Directed by Joe Wright
The definition of a “slow burn”, Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) and Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) dance around the topic of romance both literally and figuratively in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice, the blueprint for period romance movies. Their very first encounter does not go smoothly, as Darcy’s ego and elevated opinion of himself are overheard by Lizzie at the ball. As the two run into each other more, there is a sort of invisible string bulling them together, without them even realizing it.

Seeing as the film is set in the Regency era, dating wasn’t exactly an option, but these two famed literary characters managed to sneak in some quality time despite the restrictions of the period. Most notably, they share a dance so romantic that they feel like the only two people in the room. As their hands gently touch, and they look deep into each other’s eyes, the ballroom fades away, and it’s only them on the floor. There is so much romance in just a few of their longing gazes, that viewers cannot help but root for them to communicate better.

Hitch (2005)
Directed by Andy Tennant
This charming romantic movie is filled with plenty of comedic moments between Will Smith and Eva Mendes, as they navigate a budding romance. Hitch uses his dating coach expertise to plan the “perfect date” for Sara, but it’s when things go awry that the real romance blossoms. As a jet ski ride ends with a splash, and a well-thought-out trip to Ellis Island ends in rage, the way the couple navigates these hiccups is what makes them bond.
Smith uses his innate charm to win over his on-screen love interest, as well as the viewers. Sara can see the thought that was put into planning these things, which lets her see Hitch’s softer side. He’s forced to let down his guard in front of this fabulous woman which allows them to share a real moment of connection that’s spontaneous and thrilling.

Roman Holiday (1953)
Directed by William Wyler
Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck sizzle in this classic film that sees one of the best non-date first dates in cinema history. As Princess Ann longs to spend a day of normalcy, away from royal duties and protocols, she spends the day exploring Rome on a Vespa with a charismatic American journalist. As they travel through the beautiful historic city, they end up falling for each other in the process.
Romantic moments on the Spanish Steps, and the laughter-filled scene at the Mouth of Truth showed these guarded characters gradually opening up to each other as they spend more time together. This day is filled with fleeting moments which makes it all the more magical. The starlight night by the Tiber river is the cherry on top of one of the best possible days for both these characters.

They technically actively avoid dating each other in real life, despite unknowingly striking up an online relationship. As they arrange to meet in person for the first time, Joe Fox recognizes that it’s Kathleen Kelly, who is his email acquaintance. He enters the restaurant to try and navigate the situation, only to be met with more vitriol from his literary rival. They verbally spar, and by the end of their heated exchange, he realizes his true feelings. The whole scene is filled so much underlying tension and unspoken feelings, it’s clear how much potential these two have.

Before Sunrise (1995)
Directed by Richard Linklater
This whole film centers around a long date that’s filled with moments of magic and romance. As Céline (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) walk the streets of Vienna together, they share deep conversations and many unforgettable if fleeting experiences. From their initial meeting on the train, to the Ferris wheel kiss, the couple is spontaneous at every turn, eager to see where the night takes them.
Arguably one of the most romantic scenes in this iconically romantic film is the one at the record store. As Céline and Jesse find themselves in the listening booth, the closeness between them grows even more. As they exchange lustful glances between moments of comfortable silence, the attraction is electrifying. The chemistry between the characters and the actors lead to two sequels, and a beautiful on-screen love story.
