10 Movie Theories We Never Really Expected To Be True

Movie fans love to spend time meticulously breaking down movies and trailers to theorize about what could happen in upcoming stories, but sometimes, the theories that wind up being true seemed way too obvious, or out there, to actually be taken seriously. Part of being a fan of movies means spending time thinking over the film. If that means pondering the message that is contained in the story after watching it, or trying to plot out the story ahead of time after seeing a trailer, it’s all time spent theorizing.

Thinking about a movie and the hidden gems, or ideas that creatives inserted along the way is a fun and interesting approach, but sometimes, people just throw out ideas for the sake of it. They may make sense, they could have incredibly valid points, but, whether because it seems too obvious or downright disappointing, no one takes them seriously. Despite this, there have been some ludicrous theories that have been proven to be true, or confirmed by filmmakers, and honestly, it’s just kind of odd.

Maximus Is Lucius’ Father In Gladiator

Lucius was an important character in the original Gladiator film from 2000. He was a young boy of royal lineage, who stood as a co-ruler alongside his uncle, Commodus. However, there are several allusions that Maximus, the hero of the original movie, may be his father. This obviously complicates and adds further context to the harsh way that Maximus is treated, despite serving as a strong and tactical leader of the Roman Empire.

But Gladiator II does away with the ambiguous connection which suggested Maximus could have been Lucius’ father, and outright confirms it. While this was generally understood to be a possibility, the ambiguity added a layer of mystery and intensity to the concept. By removing that, and simply saying, yes, he was the father, Lucilla knew, and eventually went on asserting to Lucius that his father was Maximus, it feels a little more like a soap opera than an Oscar-winning historical epic.

Rey & Kylo Ren Having A Romantic Connection In The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

rey skywalker and kylo ren kiss

It’s fair to say that the sequel trilogy had more than its share of criticisms. While Star Wars remains one of the most beloved franchises in film history, the fanbase is rarely united in opinions about what movie is best, or how stories tie in and make sense. This has led to a lot of disputes and frustrations, which has even contributed to shows in the wider franchise being canceled. But one element that fans saw coming from miles away, and hoped would be avoided, was the romantic tension between Kylo Ren and Rey.

Rey is the hero of the sequel trilogy. She trains under Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi, and she exercises the force with incredible aptitude. However, standing in her way is the powerful young apprentice who is attuned to the Dark Side, Kylo Ren. Kylo is revealed to be the son of Leia and Han Solo, and also received training from his uncle Luke. And despite being on completely opposite sides of the conflict, Rey and Kylo are seen to share a connection from the start. While part of this is explained by the Force Bond, they also possess romantic feelings, shown by their sharing a kiss in their final moments together.

The Cars In Cars Killed All The Humans

Mater and Lightning race away from an explosion in Cars 2

Digging into Pixar theories is a dangerous game because of how deep that rabbit hole goes. People have written entire books, created websites, and lengthy essays connecting the Pixar Universe together, and things can get dark. In fact, one pivotal aspect of the Pixar theory as it pertains to the movie Cars is how the Cars came to live on a planet which has no human life, despite the cars having doors and the world having features that would be more accommodating to humans than cars. In response to this ambiguity, the creative director Jay Ward had this to say;

If you think about this, we have autonomous car technology coming in right now. It’s getting to the point where you can sit back in the car and it drives itself. Imagine in the near-future when the cars keep getting smarter and smarter and after one day they just go, “Why do we need human beings anymore? They’re just slowing us down. It’s just extra weight, let’s get rid of them.” But the car takes on the personality of the last person who drove it. Whoa. There you go. (via Screencrush)

Considering the fact that this is a kids’ film, it’s pretty wild that it should have such dark origins, but apparently, that’s certainly the idea from those closest to the project. With that in mind, it could change how people watch the movies. And ultimately, does it add to the experience, or just make it more weird?

Stan Lee Is A Watcher In The MCU

Stan Lee speaking to Watchers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Stan Lee is beloved by many as a hero and legend of modern comic books. For many of the most creative and successful years of Marvel Comics operations, Lee served sas the editor-in-chief, helping to shape the Marvel Universe and create new characters to populate it. And when the MCU took shape, Stan Lee was frequently given opportunities to cameo in these films.

However, the cameos were generally regarded as playful and fun nods to the creator, rather than some in-universe story element, since he always appeared to play different characters and roles. However, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the film appears to confirm that Stan Lee may have been a part of a race of powerful aliens known as Watchers, who are tasked with observing the multiverse, while avoiding interfering.

Aquaman Saved Superman In Man Of Steel

Henry Cavill's Superman prepares to protect Earth in Man of Steel

When Warner Bros. saw the incredible success of the MCU, they decided to double down on their superhero films, and create the DCEU. From the beginning in 2013’s Man of Steel, the movies were designed with a conscious effort to build a large shared universe. And building on this idea, when Clark gets into some trouble in the middle of the ocean, he is miraculously saved by whales, which led fans to speculate he was saved by Aquaman.

Years later, Jason Momoa, the Aquaman actor, confirmed that he did save Superman in that scene, and director Zack Snyder let him know about this detail after the fact. However, the way in which it happens appeared to be more convuluted, with Aquaman saving him from the water, and that being unseen, and the whales potentially being sent after Aquaman’s intervention.

Nothing Was Real In Don’t Worry Darling

Florence Pugh as Alice and Harry Styles as Jack in Don't Worry Darling

The Don’t Worry Darling trailer revealed an unusual world where things appeared to be a little off. Florence Pugh and Harry Styles are a seemingly happy couple, in an idyllic community that appears to evoke 1950s values and style. But with advanced technology and hidden mysteries, something bigger appears to be hidden in the film’s subplot.

From the trailer alone, many people speculated that the film was about virtual reality, and that nothing was actually real. And, for anyone who went and saw the film, this is proven to be correct. As a result, the big twist was largely a let-down, because it was already figured out before most people even went to see the movie.

Close

Quentin Tarantino is a widely popular director whose contributions to cinema have been numerous. As it turns out, Tarantino did this on purpose, and he actually designed two separate universes in which his movies exist. The first Tarantino shared universe is the “realer than real” universe, which is similar to reality, but more dark, violent, and it has an alternate history of events in some key ways. The second is the “movie movie” universe, which exists inside the first, and it is made up of the movies that people inside the “realer than real” universe would go and see in the cinemas for themselves.

Deckard Was A Replicant All Along In Blade Runner

Rick-Deckard smiling in a doorway in Blade Runner

One of the longest ongoing debates in cinema revolves around Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard from Blade Runner. The movie sees Deckard hunting highly advanced robots known as replicants, and struggling to discern who is real and who is a replicant. However, the movie left in just enough hints to suggest that Deckard may himself be a replicant to keep people guessing.

Then, the film received several different cuts, such as the director’s cut, which appears to confirm the fact that Deckard is a replicant. Despite this, people still debate the idea today, but now both the director, Ridley Scott, and the star, Harrison Ford have agreed and confirmed that Deckard was always a replicant. People will still have their own opinions on this information, but as far as the creatives involved go, it’s canon.

Get Out Is A Sequel To Being John Malkovich

get-out-being-john-malkovich-sequel-theory

One of the most unusual theories in cinema of recent years came from the Jordan Peele horror movie Get Out. The film is widely acclaimed and praised for its themes and style, and it cemented Peele as a visionary horror director, but one theory that seems to have little foundation is a connection between the 2017 horror film, and a comedy fantasy film from 1999, Being John Mlkovich. And the theory mainly exists because of a similar plot device, transferring into other peoples’ minds, and the fact that Catherine Keener appears in both films.

However, director Jordan Peele has since confirmed the connection between Being John Malkovich and Get Out works for the films and is in fact canon, though he didn’t necessarily intend it to be that way. Peele is a comedy actor, and appears to really enjoy this theory and was a fan of the 1999 movie, but the connections were not inserted intentionally. Despite this, the director appears to have adopted the theory enthusiastically.

Teddy Was A Patient All Along In Shutter Island

Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) with bloodshot eyes, pointing a gun in Shutter Island

Another film which potentially gave away much too much in the trailer. Shutter Island stars the incredibly talented Leonardo DiCaprio as a detective who is sent to a mysterious island psychiatric prison to investigate a missing patient. For some viewers, the twist in this Martin Scorsese film appears to have come as a genuine surprise, but as far as modern audiences are concerned, the hints that Teddy was actually the missing patient all along are far too obvious to ignore.

From the beginning, the movie establishes that things are off. Early on, Teddy is seen to be an unreliable narrator, and the events that take place make things seem like Teddy is not what he thinks he is. As the movie continues to push towards the ending, it ultimately resolves exactly as audiences expect, with Teddy being the patient, and the entire investigation being the imaginings of a mentally unstable man.
