Sony has done it again, and the reviews for Kraven The Hunter have described yet another dud in the long-struggle of the Sony cinematic Spider-Man spin-off universe. The lifting of the review embargo on Kraven The Hunter has already had disastrous effects on the latest Spider-Man villain solo movie, sitting at a mere 16% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. With such poor word-of-mouth, it seems as though Sony may be gearing up for another box office disaster on the level of Madame Web‘s commercial flop.

Kraven The Hunter stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular Spider-Man villain, a ruthless hunter interested in the most dangerous game. It seems as though Sony’s latest attempt to build a lasting pop culture staple via a Spider-Man villain has ended in disaster, according to the early reviews. It’s no wonder that Kraven The Hunter will mark the end of Sony’s cinematic Spider-Man spin-off universe.
10 Kraven The Hunter Isn’t Even Ironically Fun
“I sunk into my seat and groaned too often to recommend, even ironically.” – Brian Eggert, Deep Focus Review
Despite their repeated failures, there’s something pathetically charming about many of Sony’s attempts at crafting a superhero powerhouse set in Spider-Man’s world without the main character himself. The hilariously awkward press tour of Madame Web bled into the movie itself to make for a bizarre experience, and the memes surrounding Morbius were potent enough to convince Sony to release the film for an ill-advised second theatrical run. For everything that doesn’t work about them, there’s usually at least some ironic enjoyment to be wrung out of Sony’s superhero films.

Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case for Kraven The Hunter. Despite being so close to the film’s release, no internet buzz of ironic anticipation for the surely ill-fated blockbuster has made the rounds on social media, and professional reviews seem to be aware of Kraven The Hunter‘s failure as even a meme-worthy laughingstock. Instead, the movie’s brand of disappointment doesn’t even come with the silver lining of a so-bad-it’s-good ironic enjoyment.
9 Kraven The Hunter Has Some Terrible-Looking CGI Animals
“Their soulless eyes and janky animation are constant distractions.” – Tom Jorgensen, IGN
As a character, Kraven the Hunter is, unsurprisingly, heavily associated with animals, right down to the split-faced lion that decorates his chest in his traditional comic costume. It’s no wonder, then, that his debut solo film is filled to the brim with CGI representations of various animals, especially the big cats so closely associated with Kraven. Sadly, reviews indicate that the special effects portraying these fearsome beasts of the wild leaves a lot to be desired.

Tom Jorgensen of IGN compares Kraven’s four-legged buddies to the animal fatalities of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Their digital models are supposedly a far cry from the delicately-rendered fur and claws of films like the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King, or even smaller-budgeted action films like RRR, which operated at half the budget Kraven The Hunter was able to muster. Good-looking animals wouldn’t have saved Kraven The Hunter from the critical lashing it’s getting in other areas, but they certainly wouldn’t have hurt.
8 Kraven The Hunter Is Tonally Inconsistent
“The tone of the movie is all over the place.” – Chris Bumbray, JoBlo.com

One downside Kraven The Hunter seems to be sharing with its siblings in the Sony cinematic Spider-Man spin-off universe is its utter lack of any tonal consistency. The film has been marketed as a deeply serious action drama that shows off an R-rating, as Kraven leaps from bad guy to bad guy biting off noses and severing jugulars in a serious and lethal crusade against crime. This gritty, grimy flavor might have been a point in the film’s favor if it wasn’t for the constant deviations in tone that professional reviewers seem to be pointing to.
Chris Bumbray of JoBlo.com cites an early 20-minute stretch of Kraven as a child that detracts from this vibe, describing the sequence as something closer to a young adult fantasy series than anything else. The awkward romance between Kraven and Calypso further muddies the waters of what could’ve been a straightforward revenge flick in the style of a comic book-infused John Wick. In the eyes of critics, Kraven The Hunter can’t seem to pick a lane, and perhaps general audiences will soon be coming to the same conclusion.
7 Kraven The Hunter Is Stuffed With Comic Book C-Listers
“There’s at least one comics C-lister too many” – Jesse Hassenger, The AV Club
✕ Remove Ads
Arguably, Sony’s entire experiment with populating a major movie franchise solely with lesser-known Spider-Man characters is already full of obscure C-listers from the comics, with Kraven himself not even being the most crowd-drawing Spider-Man villain around. Yet it seems as though Kraven The Hunter has been desperate to hold audience attention by cramming its cast full of even more unknown comic book characters in a vain attempt to cash in on what little name recognition it can muster. The result has apparently been a bloated script full of uncompelling name-drops.
A few of the fellow Spider-Man villains populating Kraven The Hunter prior to its upcoming release were already well-known, with Alessandro Nivola’s Rhino and Fred Hechinger’s Chameleon being at least recognizable personas. Not satisfied with three Spider-Man characters, Kraven The Hunter has also seen fit to include re-imaginings of supervillain The Foreigner as a criminal assassin and the voodoo priestess Calypso as a lawyer. Including these deep-cut superhero characters in the film at all is one thing, but reinterpreting them as such basic characters makes the effort seem pointless to begin with.

6 Kraven The Hunter Still Tries To Set Up Sequels Despite Sony’s Universe Dying
“Spends its final 10 minutes unnaturally setting up sequels that’ll almost certainly never happen.” – Stephen Silver, Splice Today
It’s not exactly a shock that Kraven The Hunter will be the last film in Sony’s cinematic Spider-Man spin-off universe. The writing had been on the wall for the franchise’s downfall for a few films now, and Kraven The Hunter must’ve knowingly been the last gasp of the dying series for its production staff. This makes it all the more confounding that the film allegedly spends so much time attempting to set up sequels that are sure to never manifest in theaters.
Even for the rare reviews that were positive about Kraven The Hunter, this aspect was a sticking point of contention. It appears as though the film wastes some valuable time in the almost certainly rewardless effort of teasing Kraven’s return to the big screen. This wouldn’t be the first time Sony insisted on including strange teasers to unlikely follow-up projects, with the MCU Vulture’s cameo in Morbius being a particularly egregious example.

5 Kraven The Hunter Completely Changes Kraven’s Comic Book Character
“Comic readers who want to see how this touchstone Marvel character has been interpreted. They might be in for a disappointment or a shock.” – John Kirk, Original Cin
On paper, Kraven the Hunter should be Sony’s most ruthless Spider-Man villain yet to center a solo film around, with the character never being considered even an anti-hero in the eyes of the comics, unlike Venom or Morbius. In the comics, Kraven doesn’t have a symbiote or vampiric disease to excuse his vile behavior, hunting down Spider-Man for the pure love of the game. Critics were interested to see how Sony managed to make him at all a sympathetic or even heroic character in his own story.

The answer, it seemed, was to completely re-invent Kraven’s personality and motivations until he may as well have been a different character entirely. Rather than being a ruthless hunter of animals and people like in the comics, Sony’s Kraven is a bleeding heart conservationist who protects animals by killing people, a far cry from his original story as a big game hunter. In all of their Spider-Man spin-off movies, Sony has been perhaps too eager to turn potentially interesting and flawed characters into generic heroes, with Kraven being the latest casualty.
4 Kraven The Hunter Is Full Of Talented Actors Turning In Bad Performances
“Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s performance is bizarre, even for a comic book film.” – Howard Waldstein, CBR
In many of the negative reviews for Kraven The Hunter, the overall poor performances of the stacked cast seem to be a recurring point of contention. Kraven isn’t the first superhero role in Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s filmography, also playing the titular vigilante in Kick-Ass and Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Yet his time as Kraven has seemingly put a strange taste in the mouths of many professional reviewers, calling his feral, self-serious personality a chore to endure.

The rest of the film’s talented cast don’t seem to have fared much better. For all his iconic talent, Russel Crowe goes painfully underused as Kraven’s criminal kingpin father, and Fred Hechinger turns in a disappointing performance as Kraven’s half-brother with a knack for mimicry despite being hot off the back of Gladiator II. The common denominator here is director J.C. Chandor, but it’s hard to square away the blame of the film’s performances on him rather than Sony’s baffling executive decisions.
3 Sony’s Bad ADR From Madame Web Is Back In Kraven The Hunter
“There [are] multiple uses of ADR when, conveniently, the characters are framed in a wide shot so you can’t see their mouths.” – Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy

One of the most infamously bad elements of Madame Web was the obvious last-minute re-edits, particularly when it came to the after-the-fact dialogue replacement of certain lines. Tahar Rahim’s ADR as Ezekiel Simswas jarringly bad, with obviously dubbed-over lines not matching the actors’ lip movements in the few instances he wasn’t lucky enough to be wearing his Spider-Man-adjacent mask. While Venom: The Last Dance was spared this problem, it seems as though the terrible ADR from Madame Web has returned to Sony via Kraven The Hunter.
According to reviewers, the editing of Kraven The Hunter reeks of last-minute changes, including several abrupt cuts to black and some noticeably bad ADR. These replacement lines are often inserted in choice shots where the character’s faces aren’t facing the screen, though the effort doesn’t make their new dialogue any less easy to spot. Between this and Madame Web, 2024 has been a disastrous year for Sony in the post-production department.
2 Kraven The Hunter Has The Weakest Spider-Man Setup Yet
“Perhaps one day Kraven will have to track and hunt a person with the equivalent speed, strength, and senses of a spider, a veritable human spider person.” – Jeffrey Harris, 411 Mania

As a story, Kraven The Hunter is pretty wholly disconnected from Spider-Man. The film follows Kraven’s origins as a supernaturally strong hunter with the power of a lion in Africa to his globe-trotting rampage against his father’s criminal employees all over the world, loosely connected to New York City at all, let alone Spider-Man. That being said, Kraven is still a Spider-Man villain meant to one day battle the beloved wall-crawling hero, and Kraven The Hunter finds the laziest way of getting that across yet.
Apparently, Kraven and his mother are both depicted with some crippling arachnophobia, causing them to sometimes even hallucinate hordes of spiders clinging to webs all around them. Allegedly, this element of Kraven’s character does little to tie into the main story, serving as simply a brief visual aside to vaguely reference Spider-Man as someone Kraven might not be the most fond of in the future. After all, this Kraven is such a straight-faced hero that a fear of spiders might be the only thing that could conceivably get him to fight Spider-Man in the first place.

1 Kraven The Hunter Has A Terrible Script
“In a movie full of bad things, the script is particularly terrible” – Dan Murrell, Dan Murrell Reviews
A good screenplay is the foundation of any good movie, and by that metric, Kraven The Hunter seems to be rotten to the core. The basic narrative of Kraven’s quest to protect the only family he cares about is shaky enough, drowning in superfluous elements that could ultimately be forgiven if the strength of its characters was more noteworthy. However, it’s the dialogue that many critics have truly lambasted as the film’s most egregious cinematic failing.
The script supposedly features some aggressively tongue-in-cheek one-liners that give the cringiest lines of the DCEU a run for their money. Kraven’s shapeshifting brother is offhandedly compared to a Chameleon in a way that practically screams at the audience, desperate for recognition, and Alessandro Nivola’s Aleksei Sytsevich gives an explanation for calling himself “The Rhino” that makes absolutely zero sense. With lines as poorly thought-out and redundant as “My Grandmother died on that trip, and I never saw her again“, Kraven The Hunter has failed in the eyes of critics.
