The first entry in the Planet of the Apes reboot movie series, 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes depicts the beginnings of Andy Serkis’ Caesar, a genetically modified chimpanzee who ultimately goes on to lead an ape uprising against humanity. Unsurprisingly for such an origin story, the movie duly depicts Caesar’s personal Rubicon when he rebels against his human captors in earnest for the first time, an epic scene for the franchise that never fails to result in goosebumps.

Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez’s foray into the storied Alien franchise proved to be a smash hit, with some critics labeling 2024’s standalone prequel Alien: Romulus as the franchise’s best offering since 1986’s Aliens. Alvarez’s film saved its most shocking and unforgettable sequence for last, with the now immortal reveal of Alien: Romulus’ nightmarish Offspring; a horrifying human-Xenomorph hybrid birthed by Isabela Merced’s Kay after she takes a dose of Z-01.

The Offspring is played by Robert Bobroczkyi, a Romanian former basketball player who stands more than seven feet tall.

Simply put, the reveal of the Offspring elicits goosebumps courtesy of the fact that it’s one of the most shocking and disturbing moments in modern cinematic history. In an inspired touch, the scene’s music replicates a rapidly rising human heartbeat before dropping out in a terrifying instant as the camera pans to the abhorrent creature, producing a wicked horror moment for the ages that lands as straight-up nightmare fuel on-screen.

While Star Trek Into Darkness did its best to match the iconic original scene, the 2013 movie couldn’t come close to replicating the emotional heft and unforgettable nature of Spock’s demise in 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The death of Leonard Nimoy’s charge is one of the franchise’s most unforgettable and heartbreaking moments, even though the character would duly return to life in 1984’s Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

The Wrath of Khan sees Spock heroically sacrifice his own life, entering the radiation-flooded engine room to repair the Enterprise’s warp drive. Separated from William Shatner’s James Kirk by a clear perspex screen, Spock slowly succumbs to radiation poisoning before the captain’s very eyes. The dying Vulcan produces a tear-jerking rare display of emotion to bid farewell to his dear friend, signing off with one of Spock’s best quotes in goosebump-producing style: “I have been, and always shall be, your friend.”

A seminal sci-fi action outing that is contentiously the best Terminator movie of all time, 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s antagonist takes the form of Robert Patrick’s T-1000; an advanced liquid metal iteration of Terminator capable of shape-shifting. While this state of affairs renders him a formidable adversary for the Connors and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800, it also sets him up as the fall guy for one of science fiction’s most epic and unforgettable action sequences.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day remains the franchise’s highest-rated installment on IMDb with a rating of 8.6.

After the T-1000 is frozen by liquid nitrogen during the movie’s climactic showdown, Arnie’s cyborg deadpans a line taught to him by Edward Furlong’s John Connor before blasting Patrick’s charge into a million shards with his handgun in endlessly crowd-pleasing fashion. Schwarzenegger’s delivery of the “Hasta la vista, baby!” line as the score builds to an epic crescendo is pitch-perfect, lending iconic status to this goosebump-inducing feel-good moment.

However, the standout scene from Denis Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed sci-fi epic is undoubtedly the jaw-dropping introduction of Austin Butler’s terrifying new antagonist on Giedi Prime; Feyd-Rautha, sadistic nephew to Stellan Skarsgård’s Baron Vladimir and the heir to House Harkonnen.

Boasting an impressive rating of 8.7 on IMDb, 2014’s Interstellar is widely viewed as one of Christopher Nolan’s finest movies. Chronicling the mind-bending exploits of a group of astronauts as they travel through a wormhole in search of a new world for humanity, Nolan’s movie is led by Matthew McConaughey’s Joseph “Coop” Cooper; a NASA pilot who is forced to leave his children behind on Earth to spearhead the interstellar mission that could be mankind’s last hope.

Coop’s adventures duly see the astronaut exposed to time dilation, meaning that his young son and daughter age twenty years in what seems like a matter of minutes to McConaughey’s charge. Interstellar’s most evocative and heartbreaking scene sees Cooper passionately weeping as he receives messages from his fully grown children, with the desolating realization sinking in that his mission has cost him literal years of their lives.

A sci-fi action masterpiece from George Miller, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road represented a gloriously chaotic return for the franchise that arguably surpassed anything that had come before it. Introducing Tom Hardy as Max, Miller’s film leverages jaw-dropping action sequences and stunning visuals that rarely fail to result in goosebumps, with the incredible sandstorm chase scene during the movie’s early goings standing as its foremost example.

Boasting an ensemble cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, 2010’s Inception is one of modern cinema’s most beloved offerings. Depicting an impossible mission to pass off an idea planted in somebody’s subconscious as their own through the use of futuristic dream technology, Inception’s haunting ending stands as one of cinema’s foremost spine-tingling sequences, given the hauntingly ambiguous nature of the film’s conclusion.

Goosebumps of joy as Cobb makes it through immigration and home to his children unmolested are replaced with a shiver of doubt as the movie refuses to confirm whether DiCaprio’s charge is still dreaming or if he has actually received the happy ending he has spent the movie striving towards. Cobb typically uses a revolving top that never stops spinning in the dream world to prove that he is back in reality, but chooses not to observe his token fall on this occasion, eschewing confirmation that his world is real to see his children in one of the genre’s most poignant and debate-provoking endings.

One of science fiction’s most awe-inspiring characters, Star Wars’ Darth Vader is responsible for a considerable number of the genre’s most iconic goosebump-causing moments. The most recent example of this status quo comes against the backdrop of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with the Sith Lord appearing out of the shadows aboard the rebel command ship in the movie’s climactic sequences to massacre a hallway full of fighters in spine-tingling fashion.

The sense of dread as the trapped rebels hear Vader’s breathing just before his red lightsaber menacingly bursts into life through the darkness is masterfully constructed, an iconic scene that lives long in the memory.

The soldiers’ horrified expressions and desperate screams for help are interspersed with an epic operatic swell as the Sith Lord mercilessly slices through them, resulting in an unforgettably harrowing sequence that underlines the extent of Vader’s terrifying powers in sharp relief.
