Chris Pratt is one of the best jack-of-all-trades in the acting business today, with his movie career spanning various genres and different types of performance. Aside from his turn as Peter Quill, a.k.a Star-Lord, in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers franchises, for which he’s now most widely recognized, and his latest global Netflix chart hit The Electric State, Pratt has an array of celebrated movie roles to his name, including supporting performances in the award-winning movies Moneyball and Her. What’s more, several of his best movies are currently available for streaming.

Even before he shot to prominence in 2009 for playing Andy Dwyer in Greg Daniels’ popular sitcom Parks and Recreation, Pratt was making a name for himself in the movie industry, portraying supporting characters alongside the likes of Angelina Jolie. In the past decade and a half, however, his stature has grown enormously thanks to leading roles in franchise films, acclaimed drama movies, and comedies alike. Among Pratt’s best performances throughout the 2010s, seven are now streamable on Prime Video, Max, Disney+, and Peacock.

The Five-Year Engagement represents a period of Chris Pratt’s movie career in which he developed a specialism for clownish supporting roles in romantic comedies. The 2012 movie is a classic Jason Segel-Judd Apatow collaboration, with Nicholas Stoller on directorial duties. As well as co-writing the script, Segel plays lead character Tom, who simply can’t seem to tie the knot with the love of his life, Violet, played by Emily Blunt.

Pratt’s character, Alex, meanwhile, can’t get married quickly enough once his clumsy advances somehow end up working on Violet’s sister Suzie. This warm-hearted comedy has all the tropes you’d expect from Apatow and How I Met Your Mother star Segel, with their casting of Chris Pratt in a stock role as uncouth and bawdy best friend proving one of the movie’s best elements.

Perhaps it was Jamie Linden’s 10 Years that convinced Judd Apatow that Chris Pratt would be perfect for a supporting role in one of his movies, as Pratt plays virtually the same character in this 2011 rom-com. However, there’s something more authentic about the actor in his 10 Years role as Cully, the best friend of Channing Tatum’s protagonist, Jake. Cully’s primary form of buffoonery is drinking way too much, far too often, as opposed to Alex’s slightly lecherous approach to women in The Five-Year Engagement.
Cully’s problems are real, and they’re never resolved, but there’s also a reason why they exist. These layers give Pratt room to flex his acting chops in a nuanced performance.
Cully is more of a tragic figure whose drunken behavior ultimately gets him in trouble, while we also get a glimpse of the story behind how he acts in the movie. Pratt’s character is boorish and annoying, but he’s still a sympathetic figure, and not simply because every character is fundamentally a good person regardless of their actions, as can be the case with comedies of this ilk. Cully’s problems are real, and they’re never resolved, but there’s also a reason why they exist. These layers give Pratt room to flex his acting chops in a nuanced performance.

The 2008 action thriller Wanted is the oldest movie on this list, released before Pratt had been cast in Parks and Recreation. He only has a bit-part role in this bullet-curving vehicle for Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy’s action-hero credentials, but he manages to steal the show in every scene that includes his character.

Pratt is perfect as the idiotic and selfish colleague of Wesley Allan Gibson, a character McAvoy believes he’d now be too old to play in a Wanted sequel. His acting ability has little to do with the scene that arguably put him on the map, though, which involves a keyboard, an expletive, and a missing tooth. For those who haven’t seen Wanted yet, Chris Pratt’s performance in the movie is worth watching for that scene alone. Otherwise, newcomers to the movie might enjoy its novel approach to firing a gun.

Chris Pratt might be best known for his live-action roles in superhero, comedy, and action movies, but some of his most successful work has actually been voice acting for acclaimed and high-grossing animated films. Among the best of his animated roles is Barley Lightfoot, an elf in search of magical adventures, in Dan Scanlon’s 2020 Pixar fantasy movie Onward.

Pixar’s first foray into the magical fantasy subgenre, Onward is a treat both for fans of animated adventures involving mythical creatures and for those who get a kick of Pixar’s knack for brilliantly subverting any genre it works within. Pratt plays his part in bringing the movie’s story to life, playing the brash and reckless big brother of Onward’s teenage protagonist, Ian Lightfoot, voiced by Tom Holland. Barley doubles up as Ian’s father figure and mentor in the absence of their actual father, in this completely novel take on elf culture.

Outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Chris Pratt’s most iconic action role to date is surely the lead character in the 2015 sci-fi movie Jurassic World, which is the first and the best in a series spun off Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Pratt plays Owen Grady, an animal behavior expert who specializes in working with velociraptors at the Jurassic World park on Isla Nubar.
Isla Nubar is the same fictional island from the original Jurassic Park movie, and the Jurassic World series is set on the island at a later date.
Pratt’s character is effectively the equivalent of Sam Neill’s Alan Grant in the original Jurassic Park, a scientist with dinosaur expertise who attempts and fails to curb the overreaching ambitions of others involved in the project. The difference is, Owen Grady can actually train dinosaurs, and Pratt looks every bit the velociraptor expert as he navigates Jurassic World’s impressive CGI graphics with aplomb.

Chris Pratt’s first box-office megahit, The Lego Movie had plenty of reasons not to earn the rave reviews it did, yet proved to be a wonderfully inventive and superbly executed movie that opened up a new chapter in the history of animated cinema. Pratt plays the movie’s central hero, a construction worker in the Lego city of Bricksburg who must save his fellow builders from a series of threats hilariously framed as meta gags, before somehow finding his way back to the Lego universe from the world of humans.
Even though The Lego Movie doesn’t show Chris Pratt in the flesh, it’s still very nearly his finest hour and a half on the big screen.
The Lego Movie takes Toy Story’s self-conscious sense of humor to the next level, even laying the groundwork for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which arrived almost a decade after it was released. Even though the film doesn’t show Chris Pratt in the flesh, it’s still very nearly his finest hour and a half on the big screen. Even for those who’ve already seen it, the movie is worth rewatching just to catch the gags you might have missed the first time around.

On Peacock for a limited time only, true-story thriller Zero Dark Thirty features one of Pratt’s first serious dramatic performances. He plays a US Navy SEAL in the special team tasked with locating Osama bin Laden. While this role is relatively small, it’s as affecting as the rest of the movie, particularly in a scene where Pratt’s character confronts protagonist Maya, played by Jessica Chastain, about the mission his team is being sent on.

Zero Dark Thirty is one of Kathryn Bigelow’s wartime realist masterpieces. The movie is suspenseful and intense, but never once overplays its hand or sensationalizes its portrayal of real events for the sake of easy viewing. As a piece of history with political implications, it might have its flaws, but as a piece of drama, it’s the most engrossing piece of filmmaking that Chris Pratt has been involved in.
