All 7 Channing Tatum Sports Movies, Ranked Worst To Best

Known for his impressive physicality, coordination, and general fitness, Channing Tatum has often gravitated towards roles that showcase these abilities. He was able to put his martial arts and combat skills to use as a superhero, soldier, and undercover detective. The actor’s incredible talent for dancing was out in full force in the Magic Mike franchise and the first two Step Up movies, as well as any movie where he’s allowed to bust a move.

Channing Tatum also happens to have great comedic timing and has broken hearts with his dramatic roles, and it’s this mix of attributes that lends itself very well to sports-focused films. With themes of underdogs overcoming adversity, a dangerous competitive edge, and a lot of inspirational material, these projects were all very interesting additions to his CV. Roles that allow him to flex both his literal and acting muscles are the ones he seems to be the most comfortable in, and where he truly shines.

This particular film came about early on in Channing Tatum’s career, and it certainly shows. Not to say, his performance is poor in it, but his inexperience can be felt as he plays the comically arrogant foil to the two main characters. The movie stars Steve Howey and Mark Vogel, who play brothers that both compete as motorcross racers. A dangerous and brutal motorcycle sport, its goal is to provide a riveting backdrop both on and off the dirt tracks. Sadly, it does neither, with a lot of the drama predictable and lacking depth.

While some of the shots of the actual competitions are quite impressive, the acting and script leave a lot to be desired. Fans of the sport might enjoy some of the cameos like Chad Reed and Kevin Windham, but, equally, they might find themselves offended by the clichéd portrayal of this popular pastime. Even though Tatum is far from his charming best, this lackluster would-be blockbuster could actually be improved with more Channing. With 5% on Rotten Tomatoes and less than $4 million grossed at the box office worldwide, Supercross is one of Channing Tatum’s worst movies.

Fighting (2009)

Directed by Dito Montiel

Terrence Howard and Channing Tatum in Fighting (2009)

By 2009, Channing Tatum’s career had been on the rise, and he was cast in his first proper starring role. This film is set in the dangerous world of underground street fighting and also features Terrence Howard and Luis Guzmán. The story is not overly complex, but Tatum’s leading man potential is really beginning to show, which makes the experience more enjoyable than it should be. Having more experienced actors like Howard and Guzmán in supporting roles also strengthens the ensemble, and Zulay Henao is a very believable love interest.

Channing Tatum’s dedication to the physical requirements of the role can be seen in his movements and physique, and he brought a lot to the emotional side of the character.

There are some classic sports movie tropes, like a training montage, Shawn MacArthur’s underdog plot, and the actual fight scenes, which are shot in a very dynamic way. Channing Tatum’s dedication to the physical requirements of the role can be seen in his movements and physique, and he brought a lot to the emotional side of the character. The reception to Fighting was lukewarm at best, and it’s not the most memorable of Tatum’s roles. But, for anyone wanting to explore the popular actor’s filmography, the 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes should but their minds at ease.

The one that launched a dance revolution and a six-movie franchise, Step Up was the first in the series. It gave audiences the sizzling chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, and a fusion of dance styles. A story of a troubled youth called Tyler Gage (Tatum), who somehow ends up stumbling into a prestigious dance academy where he meets the ambitious, classically-trained Nora Clark (Dewan). Sparks fly, and the two make some sweet moves together, while changing the trajectory of his (up to now) directionless existence.

Channing Tatum is a great dancer, and his more urban style mixes very well with the balletic shapes that Jenna Dewan is able to produce, and their scenes together combine a great combination of romantic tension and genuine affection. The story is as old as time, but audiences were ready for a return to this whirling genre, and this movie doesn’t disappoint when it comes to beloved dance tropes. The final performance is full of soul, with a good soundtrack throughout. Interestingly, it’s the lowest-scored of the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s worth seeing where it all started.

This sequel proves that sometimes a franchise can get better the bigger it gets. The dance scenes were mesmerizing, the scale was grander, and the story was flipped in just the right way. Jon M. Chu showcased just how skilled he is at directing music and movement. Channing Tatum reprises his role as Tyler in a cameo capacity, as he encourages the main character, Andie (Briana Evigan) to pursue dance at the same academy that changed his life for the better.

His dance-off scene is genuinely memorable in a film filled with a lot of fantastic dancing.

Robert Hoffman completes the romantic dancing duo, and his skills are also very impressive. The supporting cast is strong, and audiences end up rooting for many different characters in the crew. There are many standout scenes, like the audition video that includes placing the smelly fish in Tuck’s vent, cameos from many well-known dance troupes, and a killer soundtrack. But it’s the epic final performance, complete with climatic rain, and exceptional choreography that is the true highlight of this movie. A generation tried and failed to recreate some of the moves, but the love for it still lives on.

Samuel L. Jackson plays the real-life Ken Carter, a basketball coach whose focus on the importance of education was a highly debated and publicized move in the local community back in the day. With a focus on a struggling team that gets turned around by the inspirational teachings of the titular coach, this film utilizes the drama that basketball affords both on and off the court. Channing Tatum plays one of the players on the team and showcases a lot of talent both as a sportsperson and an actor.

An uplifting and inspirational movie, Coach Carter also features a strong supporting cast that features Antwon Tanner, Ashanti, and Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer. The reception to the film was mostly positive, and it holds up as a solid motivational sports film with a heart. Tatum manages to make an impression among many established actors, and it’s a very good start to his resume of movies. Its box office performance was solid, and it holds a very respectable 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A romantic comedy with a competitive edge, She’s the Man is a mix of big laughs, soccer, and romance. In the vein of 10 Things I Hate About You and O, the plot is based on a Shakespeare play, in this case, Twelfth Night. It’s one of the few teen movies that managed to do it this well and this successfully. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments, mostly thanks to Amanda Bynes’ hilarious double performance as Viola and “Sebastian”. She was at her peak, and her comedic talent was mixed wonderfully with her leading lady capabilities.

They had chemistry as friends and as love interests, and he was able to showcase his funny side.

Enter Channing Tatum, who was a great romantic lead and soccer teammate. They had chemistry as friends and as love interests, and he was able to showcase his funny side. The notes of feminism were very welcome, especially as the film came out in the early 2000s, so it has aged well. Vinnie Jones’ role as the tough soccer coach is funny and intimidating, and adds authenticity, seeing as he used to play for an English football club. The film remains one of the most iconic teen flicks of all time, and Tatum was a great part of it.

Filled with tension, intrigue, rivalry, and a lot of psychological motifs, this is Channing Tatum’s most critically acclaimed film to date. With five Academy Award nominations and a host of other award recognition, the film was a hit with critics and was deeply respected by the audiences that saw it. The 88% on Rotten Tomatoes reflects just how much praise this story of the murky world of competitive wrestling has received. Tatum was able to hold his own alongside powerhouse performers like Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo, and let audiences see him in a new light.

It was also a bit of a departure for Channing Tatum, who had found his comfort zone in a mix of action blockbusters and popular franchises. This more serious side was welcomed by audiences and critics alike, and has led to more interesting roles for the actor. The film itself is full of uncomfortable power dynamics, secret manipulation, and deadly ambition. Set within the realm of Olympic wrestling just raises the stakes, and the fact that it’s based on a real story sent shivers down the spine of viewers worldwide.
