Amanda Bynes’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Amanda Bynes
was just about everywhere in the late 1990s and early 2000s thanks to her presence on Nickelodeon, but not all of her best movies and TV shows were part of the children’s network. Nickelodeon certainly provided Bynes with her big break thanks to appearances in the children’s sketch comedy series All That, but she also branched out into teen rom-coms and even musicals as she got older.

These days, Amanda Bynes is not acting anymore. After some mental health struggles, it appears that staying out of the Hollywood limelight is what works for Bynes. She has been active on social media as she dabbles in other creative fields, like fashion design and more traditional art, but her fans can still relive her time as an actor with the best movie and TV projects that Bynes made during her career.

Big Fat Liar was not a hit with critics when it was released, but comedies aimed at children rarely are. The movie was made when Amanda Bynes was transitioning away from Nickelodeon and toward more teen content, making it a unique stepping stone in her career. Here, she gets to employ a lot of the comedic talents she did on Nickelodeon (like imitating others), but she is also the level-headed one of the movie.

As Kaylee, Bynes plays the best friend of Frankie Muniz’s character. He is a habitual liar who cannot seem to help himself, and she often gets roped into his schemes, covering for him. When his creative writing assignment is stolen by another habitual liar who happens to be a Hollywood producer, Kaylee is the only one he can count on to help him prove it. They go on an adventure to Hollywood to annoy the Hollywood heavyweight until he admits what he did.

While Muniz is the star of this movie, Bynes is great in the supporting role. She gets to quietly pull him back from the edge, show off her own skills, and play a slightly more mature role than she played on Nickelodeon. It’s the perfect transitional movie for her.

Because All That provided Amanda Bynes with her big break, it would be hard to make a list of her best projects without including it. Fans have been looking back on the show through a different lens with the release of the documentary Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The documentary features interviews with former Nickelodeon stars as well as writing staff which paints a dark picture of shows on the network, including All That.

Despite the dark cloud that might hang over the show now, it’s clear that Amanda Bynes was a bright spot during her time on the show. All That was Nickelodeon’s answer to Saturday Night Live, but aimed at children. The sketch comedy series featured a cast of children and teens, musical performances, and send-ups of pop culture. Bynes played several characters during her run on the show, and her time on the show actually led to her getting her own series on Nickelodeon.

As a teenager, Bynes made the move away from children’s programming and Nickelodeon. She started taking on roles that befitted her age, like that of Holly in What I Like About You.

Bynes also got the chance to play to more dramatic storylines instead of strictly comedy…

The series kicks off with Holly trying to avoid moving to Japan with her father. When her father takes a new job, she seeks out her estranged big sister Val (Jennie Garth) in an effort to get to stay in her beloved New York. Initially, she tries to pretend to be someone she’s not to get Val to let her stay, but throughout the show the sisters grow closer.

The series is largely a coming-of-age story for Holly. Because of that, it allows Bynes to play with a lot of the big teenage milestones that her previous projects did not, like falling in love for the first time, going to school dances, and more. Bynes also got the chance to play to more dramatic storylines instead of strictly comedy, as the sisters often had emotional bonding moments amid all of the jokes.

After What I Like About You ended, Bynes also has a handful of teen comedies that help to show her strengths as a dramatic actor as much as a comedic one. Sydney White is one of those. It also happened to be a retelling of the Snow White fairytale set in the modern day.

Filmed on location at Rollins College and the University of Central Florida in Florida, the movie transplanted the story of Snow White, here renamed Sydney, to the college campus. Sydney (Bynes) initially heads to college with the intention of following in her mother’s footsteps, specifically, pledging her sorority. When she does not find herself fitting in with the direction the sorority has taken, she is instead welcomed by the “seven dorks” who live in a rundown old fraternity house, and she makes new friends.

Though the movie was a box office bomb, it is still a great snapshot of Bynes as a rom-com lead. She is charming and likable without becoming a stereotype in her comedic choices.

In addition to her television and rom-com work, Bynes also made a brief foray into voice acting. She did not give voice to many animated characters in her career, but she did play a robot in the 2005 movie Robots, a role that is sometimes forgotten.

The aptly titled movie is set in a world populated by robots. While it primarily follows an inventor discovering his dream job is something of a scam, Bynes’ Piper is a supporting character in the movie. Piper is the robot equivalent of a teenage girl. She even uses a high gloss spray paint to touch up her metallic sheen like a human being would use makeup. It’s her relationship with her brother that dominates her character.

Piper is such a different role for Bynes, who had already proven herself accomplished at physical comedy at a very young age. Her expressive style of performing isn’t seen here, but the audience can still hear her enthusiasm in her voice.

It’s much more complicated than a typical love triangle, and the use of disguises makes it all that much funnier.

She’s The Man is one of a handful of teen movies that adapts a Shakespeare classic. In this case, it’s Twelfth Night, a comedy about mistaken identity and love.

The movie sees Bynes play Viola, a teenage girl pursuing playing soccer at a collegiate level. When the girls’ team is cut at her school, she and her friends attempt to play for the boys’ team, but they are refused by the coach and the players. Viola decides to disguise herself as her brother Sebastian, taking his place at boarding school when he asks her to cover for him while he is in England with his band. Viola’s disguise includes playing soccer as her brother at the school and befriending his roommate, whom she develops feelings for.

The complications arise when the most popular girl in school develops a crush on “Sebastian,” but Viola has a crush on Sebastian’s roommate, who previously had feelings for the most popular girl in school. It’s much more complicated than a typical love triangle, and the use of disguises makes it all that much funnier.

She’s The Man truly shows how versatile Bynes is as an actor. She is flawless in her physical comedy, her situational comedy, and in her more emotional moments in the movie.

Though What A Girl Wants features a lot of comedic elements, it is one of the more dramatic of Bynes’ movies. It’s also based on the 1955 play The Reluctant Debutante, making it yet another one of Bynes’ comedies that was actually an adaptation of a property considered to be a classic.

The movie follows Bynes as the teenage Daphne, who discovers her father is a British aristocrat. Her mother had been tricked into leaving him when she was pregnant with Daphne 17 years earlier. As Daphne takes the chance to fly to meet him, her world is turned upside down by the societal rules she does not quite understand and the potential stepmother and stepsister she could end up with. Because her father is aiming for a political position, some of her missteps reflect poorly on him, creating more conflict as the two try to get to know one another.

Though critics did not find the movie particularly compelling, it allowed Bynes’ young fans, who had been growing up with her on Nickelodeon, to see her in a more mature role. It also allowed them to see her in a more emotional role as Daphne has to deal with the weight of her parents’ decisions while she is going through a tumultuous time in her own life.

…the show was abruptly canceled after three seasons when Bynes left Nickelodeon to pursue different roles…

Just three years after Amanda Bynes first appeared on All That, she got her own headlining series on Nickelodeon. The Amanda Show was a spin-off of All That. Like the original series, The Amanda Show is also a sketch comedy series. The series is built around characters played by Amanda Bynes.

The Amanda Show has a show-within-a-show format as Bynes would talk directly to the camera as part of the show and the audience would be treated to “behind the scenes” elements that were actually sketches. Bynes appeared as the title character in recurring sketches like “Judge Trudy,” which was a send-up of the reality series Judge Judy and “Moody’s Point,” which spoofed the teen drama Dawson’s Creek.

Though the show was abruptly canceled after three seasons when Bynes left Nickelodeon to pursue different roles, it’s a great showcase of her talent. Bynes is in nearly every scene in the series, the face in the middle of every sketch, and this is the series that helped to earn Bynes comparisons to Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, and even Eddie Murphy.

She is a scene stealer throughout Easy A.

Another Bynes project inspired by another story is Easy A. Easy A is based on the classic literary tome The Scarlet Letter. Emma Stone takes on the role of the persecuted woman here, though she is not an unwed mother or living in a puritanical village.

Instead, Easy A takes place in the modern day as Olive (Stone) finds herself lying about her reputation when her best friend presses her for information about a date. That lie grows into her lying about the reputations of other classmates in exchange for gift cards and other forms of payment. She becomes labeled as something of a harlot and her life begins to spiral. Part of that spiraling is the result of Marianne (Bynes).

Marianne is a devout Christian, leading prayers and singalongs on their high school campus. She tries to befriend Olive, thinking she can “save” her, but that does not work out. Marianne is played as something of an extreme devotee by Bynes. Her acting choices make Marianne a wide-eyed innocent and simultaneously one of the most judgmental people in the movie. She is a scene stealer throughout Easy A.

Hairspray is a musical comedy film directed by Adam Shankman, based on the Broadway musical of the same name. Amanda Bynes did not have a history of appearing in musicals when she was cast in Hairspray in 2007, so her casting might have been a surprise to some. Her comedic talents, however, were a perfect fit for Penny Pingleton.

The movie is an adaptation of the Broadway musical, which in turn is an adaptation of a non-musical movie. All three stories follow Tracy Turnblad as she becomes the first plus-size dancer on a Bandstand-like series in the 1960s and encourages racial integration. Penny is Tracy’s best friend, the daughter of an extremely conservative and bigoted woman. Many of Penny’s interactions with her mother are played for laughs, though the behavior would be considered abusive by modern standards.

Where Bynes shines is in her scenes with Elijah Kelley, who played her love interest Seaweed. The two have fantastic chemistry and Bynes nails her near-fainting spells every time he comes near her. She also nails her brief singing moments in the movie despite doubts that she would be able to do the vocal work from naysayers.

Hairspray is easily Amanda Bynes’s best movie. She gets to use all of the comedic and dramatic skills learned from her younger years in a grand spectacle. She also gets to sing and dance, something she does not do in her other projects. It’s likely one of the most intensive of projects for her, despite having been in a supporting role.
