Baldur’s Gate 3 difficulty settings
Ahead of the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios’ YouTube channel hosted the final From Hell panel, where several key topics were discussed. These include character creation, available character origins, romance options, and combat difficulty.
It was previously revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 would feature three difficulty modes: Balanced, Explorer, and Tactician, and this information remains unchanged. Each of these difficulty modes provides players with a unique experience, and the flexibility allows them to adjust the difficulty level during gameplay, ensuring players are not locked into a specific setting after starting the game.
Balanced mode
Baldur’s Gate 3’s senior combat designer Matt Holland revealed at the Hell Panel that every combat encounter in the game is carefully designed and is a unique puzzle to provide. Players resolve. Given the vast number of classes and team compositions available, each scenario requires a different strategy.
The default difficulty mode, called Balanced Mode (previously Normal Mode during Early Access), strikes a balance between challenging combat and enjoying the unfolding narrative. Players will need to use tactical thinking without facing powerful enemies and immerse themselves in the story while engaging in thought-provoking combat.

The difficulty settings in Baldur’s Gate 3 not only affect combat, but also how easy it is to complete other challenges, such as speech checks and saving throws. The Early Access version shows that the balance of Balanced Mode is well managed throughout, providing players with an enjoyable and challenging experience.
Explorer mode
The second difficulty setting, called Explorer Mode, is designed to satisfy players who prioritize story and narrative experience over intense combat. In this mode, friendly NPCs are harder to kill and trade at better prices. The most notable change, however, is the increase in player proficiency rewards.
In Explorer Mode, players gain an additional +2 to their proficiency, for a total of +4 starting at level 1. This significant bonus helps combat encounters as well as other die rolls, making progress smoother and reducing the fear of failure. It allows players to indulge in a role-playing experience similar to a traditional tabletop Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) campaign, emphasizing storytelling and enjoyment rather than challenging combat.
Tactician Mode:
The final difficulty setting, Tactician Mode, caters to players looking for a more strategic and challenging combat experience. This mode is designed for those who want to approach combat with careful planning and well-thought-out tactics.
The combat design team at Larian Studios goes beyond simply tweaking enemy health and AC. Tactician Mode introduces “a little spice” to every battle and analyzes it on two levels. The first level involves global adjustments, increasing enemy health and adjusting enemy types to handle greater challenges.
However, the second level is where Tactician Mode really shines. Combat encounters are individually crafted, with enemies wielding more powerful weapons, ammunition, and abilities. Environmental factors also play a crucial role, where positioning becomes even more important.

Brutal AI features further enhance the challenge, making enemies behave more tactically and strategically, giving players an experience similar to facing a real Dungeon Master (DM). Tactician Mode takes difficulty to the next level, forcing players to adapt, think critically, and strategize effectively to overcome the toughest challenges.

Baldur’s Gate gameplay
Baldur’s Gate III is a role-playing video game that offers single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes. Players can choose to create one or more characters and form a team with computer-generated companions to begin the game’s story. Additionally, players can team up with others online to form a co-op team using one of their characters.
Compared with previous games in the Baldur’s Gate series, Baldur’s Gate III uses turn-based combat, similar to Larian Studios’ earlier games Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin II. However, this time the combat system is based on the rules of the fifth edition of “Dungeons and Dragons”, adding depth and strategy to the game.
