Jennifer Kent’s directorial debut follows Amelia, a widowed Australian mother still grieving the violent death of her husband. When Amelia’s son Samuel begins insisting that a monster has taken up residence in their home, she must attempt to keep Sam safe despite the looming seemingly supernatural presence that threatens to take both of their lives. Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman star as Amelia and Samuel.
Director Jennifer Kent Release Date November 28, 2014 Distributor(s) Umbrella Entertainmen Cast Noah Wiseman , Essie Davis Runtime 94 minutes
Released in 2014, The Babadook is an independent horror movie that took the world by storm upon its arrival. Made in Australia and directed by first-time filmmaker Jennifer Kent, the film focuses on Amelia, a widow raising a six-year-old as a single mother. Amelia is struggling with mental health issues, and things get worse when her son, Samuel, starts to draw pictures of a mythical demon known as the Babadook. He believes the demon is real, and soon, things start happening that might prove it to be true.
This horror release is, at heart, a tale of a mother who is dealing with grief but has no idea how to fight this very real monster. Whether the Babadook is the personification of grief or it is real remains up to the viewer, as Kent offers no easy answers. The symbolism and themes helped the movie achieve critical success, winning awards at the AACTA Awards and Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Its 98% certified fresh critical rating shows that it is a horror release worth checking out.

Originally conceived as a parody trailer in 2007’s Grindhouse, Thanksgiving is a 2023 horror-slasher film from director Eli Roth. The movie centers around a serial killer who heads to a small town in Massachusetts that creates a huge event out of Thanksgiving each year with the intent of turning the residents into the main course.
Director Eli Roth Release Date November 17, 2023 Distributor(s) TriStar Pictures Cast Addison Rae , Patrick Dempsey , Jalen Thomas Brooks , Nell Verlaque , Milo Manheim , Gina Gershon Runtime 106 Minutes
When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez created their epic Grindhouse movie, fake Grindhouse trailers were placed between the two features. These include fake film from directors like Edgar Wright, Robert Rodriguez, Eli Roth, and more. Rodriguez made his fake trailer (Machete) into a movie and Hobo With a Shotgun was also made into a real movie after its fake trailer played in Grindhouse. Now, Eli Roth has made his fake trailer into a real film with Thanksgiving.
The movie sees someone wearing a big Pilgrim mask and killing people during a celebration in a small town. As with most slasher movies, it is up to mostly a group of young adults to figure out who the killer is while the local police and authority figures provide no help. The movie plays it mostly straight for a slasher, but it has some inventive kills and some scary moments. For anyone looking for a fun slasher movie on Netflix, this 2023 release fits that bill.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a chilling horror film that follows father-and-son coroners who encounter a highly unusual and disturbing autopsy. As they delve deeper into the examination of an unidentified woman’s body found at a crime scene, they uncover increasingly bizarre clues that reveal a dark and terrifying secret. The film masterfully combines supernatural elements with a claustrophobic setting to create a tense and gripping mystery.
Release Date December 21, 2016 Cast Emile Hirsch , Brian Cox , Ophelia Lovibond , Michael McElhatton , Olwen Kelly , Jane Perry , Parker Sawyers , Mary Duddy , Mark Phoenix Runtime 86 Minutes
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe is a movie that slipped by horror audiences in 2016 without getting much attention until it later debuted on home video and streaming. Since that time, horror fans have discovered what they missed. It is a smart and scary film with Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch starring as a medical examiner and his son who get a Jane Doe and are asked to determine the cause of death. However, as they start to cut her open and start the examination, bad things start happening.
This movie is about a witch killed many years ago, and the body might possess her evil spirit of vengeance. Based mostly in one location of the morgue, the film is an acting masterclass by Cox and Hirsch, who are mostly forced to act against a dead body on the examining table until the true horrors arrive throughout the night. The film received mostly positive reviews (86% on Rotten Tomatoes), and while people ignored it while it was in theaters, this is one Netflix horror movie that deserves its reevaluation.

Based on the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring chronicles the haunting of the Perron family after moving into a Rhode Island farmhouse. The film went on to kickstart the Conjuring franchise, a series of supernatural horror films.
Director James Wan Release Date July 19, 2013 Distributor(s) Warner Bros. Pictures Cast Joey King , Vera Farmiga , Lili Taylor , Patrick Wilson , Ron Livingston Runtime 112 minutes
The Conjuring Universe has been one of the most successful franchises in the horror genre over the last decade. The movie that started it all is on Netflix, if anyone wants to start from the beginning. The main franchise, starting with this movie, follows Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life paranormal investigators played here by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. While they were best known for investigating the Amityville Horror home, this one takes viewers into a lesser-known investigation.
In The Conjuring, Ed and Lorraine head to investigate a farmhouse in Rhode Island, where a family of seven says they believe a haunting is terrorizing them. The Warrens soon learn this is true and set out to find out what is haunting this home and figure out how to exorcise it to save this family. The film was a huge success, making $319.5 million on a $20 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and creating a franchise that has several movies and spinoffs, including The Nun and Annabelle.

From director Zach Snyder, Army of the Dead combines the zombie apocalypse and heist genres in an exciting twist on the classic action film. Approached to retrieve $200 million dollars from a casino vault in the now zombie-ridden Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries embarks on the mission, unaware of what dangers await them inside the quarantined city limits.
Director Zack Snyder Release Date May 21, 2021 Distributor(s) Netflix Cast Ana de la Reguera , Samantha Win , Tig Notaro , Matthias Schweighöfer , Huma Qureshi , Omari Hardwick , Michael Cassidy , Theo Rossi , Ella Purnell , Raul Castillo , Hiroyuki Sanada , Garret Dillahunt , Richard Cetrone , Dave Bautista , Nora Arnezeder Runtime 139 minutes Expand
While most people obsessively began to follow Zack Snyder thanks to his DCU movies, he really got his start with a remake of the zombie classic, Dawn of the Dead. With that, he proved that he could take a beloved classic film and create something just different enough to entertain both fans of the original and fans who love watching zombie movies in the modern day. Once he left the DCU, one of the first movies he worked on was returning to the zombie genre with Army of the Dead.
Army of the Dead sees a zombie outbreak start thanks to something the U.S. military lost containment of outside Las Vegas. The outbreak was confined to Vegas, and the U.S. government blocked it off to keep them there, so a man hired a crew of mercenaries to break into Vegas and steal his money from a vault. There was backstabbing and ulterior motives, but the best part of this horror movie was seeing a mostly smart lead zombie waging war on the humans who came into his kingdom.

They soon team up with sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), and the group embark on a cross-country trip in search of refuge from the zombie horde.
Director Ruben Fleischer Release Date October 2, 2009 Distributor(s) Sony Cast Emma Stone , Jesse Eisenberg , Woody Harrelson , Abigail Breslin Runtime 88 minutes
Netflix has one of the best horror comedies in the zombie genre available with Zombieland. The movie sees a small group of survivors trying to make ends meet until they meet each other and start to ruin everything. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin are Wichita and Little Rock, sisters who survive by scamming other survivors.
However, when the four meet up, they realize they have to work together, or they might all end up dying in this world overrun by zombies. The movie was a massive success at the box office, spawning a sequel. It had brilliantly funny moments, including a sequence with Bill Murray playing himself. There are also rumors that director Ruben Fleischer could return and make a third movie, with the director commenting on waiting until 2029, so each installment would have a 10-year break.

1922 is a Netflix original movie starring Thomas Jane, Molly Parker, and Dylan Schmid. The film tells the story of Wilfred James, who plots to murder his wife with the help of his son for financial gain. The film is based on Stephen King’s horror novella of the same name.
Director Zak Hilditch Release Date October 20, 2017 Distributor(s) Netflix Cast Thomas Jane , Dylan Schmid , Neal McDonough , Molly Parker , Brian D’Arcy James , Kaitlyn Bernard Runtime 101minutes
Netflix has made a few solid Stephen King adaptations, and in 2017, it made a movie based on one of King’s more obscure short stories. Based on a novella from the book Full Dark, No Stars, the movie 1922 is a historical piece with Thomas Jane starring as Wilf, a farmer who lives in Nebraska with his wife and teenage son, Henry. When his wife decides to sell their farm and move to the city (Omaha), Wilf convinces his son to help murder her so they won’t have to move and can keep the farm.
Wilf throws her into a dry well, where rats feed on her. While the local sheriff believes Wilf might have had something to do with her disappearance, he sticks to the story that she ran out on him and their son. The movie is similar to Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cat, as Wilf soon ends up haunted by visions and sounds from his wife, including rats descending on him and his home. The story is terrifying, with some striking imagery, and is one of King’s scarier movie adaptations.

Bone Tomahawk is a Western film that follows Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who gathers together a group of fighters to save three kidnapped victims from a clan of cannibals. After the town’s doctor is kidnapped along with two others, forcing the sheriff to partner with the town’s Native American professor and find the tribe before it’s too late.
Director S. Craig Zahler Release Date October 23, 2015 Cast Patrick Wilson , Kurt Russell , Sean Young , Lili Simmons , Matthew Fox , Zahn McClarnon Runtime 132 minutes
Bone Tomahawk is a unique horror movie in that it is a horror Western that combines the two classic film genres into one bloody mess. Kurt Russell takes the lead in the film as Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who has to deal with a brigand who is ambushed at a Native American burial site and escapes while his partner is killed in an ambush. Soon, Hurt returns to his office and finds that the brigand, a deputy, and the doctor’s daughter are gone. He learns they might have been captured by a group of inbred cannibals known as the Troglodytes.
This is where things turn into a straight horror movie, as Hurt and his men go to find the abducted people and find themselves in a life-or-death battle with a group that even other native tribes do their best to avoid. The film is a hard watch at times, with bloody, violent, and disturbing scenes when the Troglodytes start their torture and attack. However, it was also highly praised as a tense horror Western, rated at 91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Pearl, a prequel to the film X, follows the story of a young woman named Pearl residing on a secluded farm during the early 20th century. Directed by Ti West, this psychological horror explores Pearl’s descent into madness, delving into her troubled psyche and the haunting circumstances that surround her. Starring Mia Goth, the film provides a chilling backdrop and a character study of ambition and isolation gone awry.
Director Ti West Release Date September 16, 2022 Distributor(s) A24 Cast Mia Goth , David Corenswet , Tandi Wright , Matthew Sunderland , Emma Jenkins-Purro Runtime 102 minutes
When Ti West released his throwback horror movie X, few people could have expected that a prequel would arrive just months later. However, this is what happened as Pearl tells the origin story of Pearl and Howard, the elderly couple who were secretly serial killers. This movie brings back Mia Goth, who starred as both Pearl and the Final Girl, Maxine, in X, to reprise her role as Pearl, a young woman living with her parents while her husband, Howard, was fighting in World War I.
This movie shows how Pearl went from the girl next door to a serial killer, and it is an unflinching look at her descent into madness. Much like X, this prequel also received rave reviews and was, in many ways, even better than X. The film received a 92% positive fresh rating on ORtten Tomatoes, and Goth proved that she was an actress to watch. Many critics groups named it one of the year’s top films, and Goth won the Best Lead Performance Award at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

The 2017 horror film Annabelle is a spinoff of James Wan’s Conjuring universe. Starring Annabelle Wallis as Mia and Ward Horton and John, the plot centers on a couple who experiences supernatural events after having their house invaded by members of a satanic cult and bringing home an antique doll. The doll is possessed by a demonic spirit and begins to terrorize them and their newborn daughter.
Release Date October 3, 2014 Director John R. Leonetti Cast Annabelle Wallis , Alfre Woodard , Michelle Romano , Eric Ladin , Tony Amendola , Ward Horton Runtime 99minutes
Annabelle, part of The Conjuring franchise, remains one of the best horror movies on Netflix, especially among those that deal with the supernatural. While Insidious was a great franchise starter for James Wan, it was The Conjuring that provided him with a plethora of story ideas in the form of sequels and spin-offs.
The original Conjuring movie focused on Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life paranormal investigators who went to exorcise a home. The Conjuring featured many haunted objects in the Warrens’ collection, including the haunted doll Annabelle. The spinoff Annabelle takes place in the past and shows how the Warrens got their hands on the doll. Annabelle was almost as successful as The Conjuring and spawned two sequels of its own, though the original remains the best.
The two
Annabelle
sequels are
Annabelle: Creation
(2017) and
Annabelle Comes Home
(2019), both written by Gary Dauberman.

Ouija follows a group of friends who play with an Ouija board and accidentally awaken an ancient dark spirit. The 2014 supernatural horror film was critically panned upon release but did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. The 2014 horror movie on Netflix follows a group of friends who awaken dark forces by playing with a Ouija board, leading to a series of haunting and fatal events. While the movie employs familiar horror movie elements, it’s the atmospheric tension and the sense of inevitable dread that distinguishes it.

The Spanish horror movie is an expertly told social commentary that explores the darkest aspects of human nature, such as greed and survival. That’s all wrapped in a claustrophobic and disturbing setting, and The Platform features one of the most harrowing plot twists of any horror movie on Netflix.

This reboot of the Dracula story deviates from Bram Stoker’s novel, creating an original backstory for the famous vampire. Vlad Draculea, a prince of Transylvania, seeks help from an ancient vampire in preparation for war – but falls victim to the curse himself.
Release Date October 1, 2014 Director Gary Shore Cast Luke Evans , Sarah Gadon , Dominic Cooper , Art Parkinson , Charles Dance , Diarmaid Murtagh Runtime 92
Dracula Untold reimagines Dracula’s origin unlike any other story that’s come before. The movie follows Vlad the Impaler’s transformation into the immortal bloodsucker to save his family and kingdom. The movie is essentially the beginning of the shortlived Universal Dark Universe, but it’s a fun and scary standalone movie that injects high-octane action into the age-old story.
Combining elements of action and horror, the film is an exciting adventure flick, but it also turns Dracula into a more three-dimensional character, as Vlad the Impaler is depicted as a tragic hero as opposed to a monster.

The Pope’s Exorcist is a supernatural thriller directed by Julius Avery. The film stars Russell Crowe as Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s chief exorcist, who delves into a case involving a terrifying demonic possession. Based on the real-life experiences of Father Amorth, the movie explores themes of faith and the battle against dark forces.
Release Date April 5, 2023 Director Julius Avery Cast Russell Crowe , Daniel Zovatto , Alex Essoe , Franco Nero , Peter DeSouza-Feighoney Runtime 103 Minutes
The Pope’s Exorcist provides straightforward yet effective scares. Russell Crowe plays real-life holy man Father Gabriele Amorth as he investigates the case of a possessed child. Based on Amorth’s books, The Pope’s Exorcist sees Crowe playing an atypical character for him, but with the same rebellious streak that is perfect for Crowe’s presence.
While critically divisive, The Pope’s Exorcist is best when Crowe is on screen, with a good scare and it all zips along entertainingly in a way that suits the platform. The 2023 film is especially worth watching given that The Pope’s Exorcist 2 is coming.

In the year 1905, a man travels to a remote island to rescue his sister, who’s been kidnapped by a religious cult. Netflix picked up the film in March 2017, about a month before production began. It had its world premiere at the 2018 Fantastic Fest.
Release Date September 21, 2018 Director Gareth Evans Cast Dan Stevens , Kristine Froseth , Lucy Boynton , Michael Sheen , Bill Milner , Mark Lewis Jones Runtime 130 Minutes
Apostle is a gothic horror movie starring Legion’s Dan Stevens as Thomas Richardson. Directed by Gareth Evans, the film has a lot in common with the classic horror movie The Wicker Man, and it struggled somewhat to get over with some critics due to those comparisons.
Typically gory for an Evans project, Apostle sees Stevens’ hero Thomas travel to a Welsh island to rescue his sister, who was kidnapped by a cult and held for ransom. However, what he finds there is a pagan ritual and a hungry god that needs sustenance.

Scaring is one thing, but horrors that also manage to pack in laughs are a rare breed. The Babysitter is an under-seen horror comedy that could provide a lot of fun, relatively short, and easy to watch. The movie centers around a young boy who discovers that his babysitter is part of a satanic cult, putting him in the middle of their deadly plans.
With broad characters, bloody kills, and a terrific villainous role from Samara Weaving, The Babysitter is hugely entertaining. It was so popular on the streaming platform that it spawned a sequel starring modern horror final girl Jenna Ortega.
