Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn has a film adaptation in the early development stages, begging the question of an adaptation for The Stormlight Archive and its hypothetical casting. In an August 2022 livestream, Sanderson announced progress on a Mistborn film (although in 2023 revealed the project had been put on pause). While waiting for more news on the project, there are plenty of corners of Sanderson’s fantasy universe to theorize about. The Stormlight Archive does not have a movie or show in development yet, but given the popularity of fantasy projects in Hollywood, it seems like a real possibility.

The Stormlight Archive is one of the best fantasy books that could make a great movie or TV show, with some of the most exciting character development and world-building in modern fantasy. Its main cast would consist primarily of the Kholin family and other Alethi characters. According to Sanderson in a Reddit comment, Alethi would most closely resemble real-life Asian, Arab, and Polynesian physical features, so the hypothetical actors will correspond to those backgrounds. Acting skill and personality are the most vital attributes, though, as Sanderson’s rich characters deserve lively, faithful portrayals.

Another Reddit comment from Brandon Sanderson saw the author mention that he’d imagine Dave Bautista playing Dalinar Kholin in an adaptation of The Stormlight Archive. In this case, Sanderson might be on to something. Physically, Bautista is the perfect embodiment of the broad-shouldered warlord, as someone who could believably command the respect of troops on the battlefield and politicians in a war council.
At 55 years old, Bautista is suitable for the aging High Prince, and the role could be exactly what he’s been searching for. In an interview with GQ, Bautista shared that his primary goal is to be a respected actor. While he’s been popular, primarily in action movies, Bautista hasn’t had the chance to truly show off his acting chops with a character as complex as Dalinar. Dalinar Kholin is one of Sanderson’s finest achievements in character creation and could easily be one of the most entertaining fantasy protagonists in film or television.
9
Aramis Knight
Kaladin
Younger fantasy characters are typically the most challenging to fan-cast, as they’d generally be played by unknown actors. Kaladin would likely be the central character of the first film or season in a Stormlight Archive adaptation, so picking someone with charisma would be vital in attracting viewers. Aramis Knight, who’s previously starred in Into the Badlands and Ms. Marvel as talented warrior characters, fits the look and has the screen presence to play such an enjoyable character. Kaladin is one of the most beloved heroes in Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere books, who could be a monumental live-action fantasy character.

Ellie Bamber
Shallan Davar

Finding a star for Shallan who can nail the chemistry with Kaladin, Jasnah, and Adolin is paramount, as her witty banter and admirable charisma are essential to her character. However, that doesn’t discredit her depth, as Shallan is one of the most complex protagonists in the series. Ellie Bamber, the star of the Disney+ fantasy series Willow, could be the best choice for Shallan, offering a mix of charm and humor with emotional nuance. Despite being a bit older than Shallan, Bamber is still youthful and easy to picture as a character in their late teens.

Élodie Yung
Jasnah Kholin
Known best for her role as Elektra in Netflix’s Marvel shows, Élodie Yung is a bada** actress with athletic talent to support her in action-packed roles. For The Stormlight Archive, she’d be playing a different sort of bada** as the elegant but formidable Jasnah Kholin. Yung hasn’t played characters as conversational as Jasnah, so seeing her in a more dialogue-driven role would be exciting. She’s had great chemistry with screen pairings before, like with Charlie Cox in Daredevil, and similar chemistry would be vital in a Stormlight Archive adaptation.
6
Charles Melton
Adolin Kholin

In Brandon Sanderson’s post regarding Dalinar’s casting, he also mentions actor Alex Landi. While it’s not a bad choice, it’s hard to deny how great the recent Golden Globe-nominated actor Charles Melton could be as Adolin. Right now, he’s about eight years older than Adolin, who’s 25 in The Way of Kings, but he’s played characters younger than his age before, with Riverdale being the primary example. Melton has proved to be an exciting young star and could make Adolin an unforgettable supporting protagonist.
5
Mackenyu
Elhokar Kholin
Elhokar Kholin is one of the most fascinating characters in The Stormlight Archive, given that he’s in a position of innate power but simply isn’t as competent as what’s required for a kingdom at war. Elhokar is primarily a supporting character, though his pivotal moments would require serious acting talent. It’s a difficult choice, but Mackenyu from Netflix’s live-action One Piece could portray Elhokar with the necessary arrogance while also having the charisma to make the character likable when necessary.
4
Shohreh Aghdashaloo
Navani Kholin
Known best for playing Chrisjen Avasarala in all six seasons of The Expanse, playing Navani Kholin wouldn’t be a massive stretch for actress Shohreh Aghdashaloo. Similar to her character in the sci-fi series, Navani is formidable and dangerous when she needs to be. Navani is intensely loyal to her family, playing an integral matriarchal role in the Kholin clan, supporting Dalinar as a wife, and being a renowned scholar and engineer.

Shaun Kaufman
Renarin Kholin
Renarin Kholin is one of the most challenging stars to cast for The Stormlight Archive, as the younger brother of Adolin would almost certainly be played by a completely unknown actor. Beginning the series as a soft-spoken character struggling to find his place, Renarin becomes a vital player as a Truthwatcher. Saun Kaufman, who appeared in The Summer I Turned Pretty, could be a suitable casting choice. Though he played a vastly different character in that series, he’s a talented young actor who could capture Renarin’s depth.
2
Oded Fehr
Torol Sadeas
One of the most exciting characters to see in the first season or film of a Stormlight Archive adaptation would be Torol Sadeas, the first primary antagonist in the series. The question of Sadeas’ loyalty is a vital piece of the anticipation in The Way of Kings, and selecting an actor like Oded Fehr, who could believably play both good and bad, would be fascinating for seeing events play out on screen. Fehr recently played Admiral Vance on Star Trek: Discovery, so he’s had experience playing a well-groomed military leader.

Milly Alcock
Sylphrena
Kaladin’s spren, Syl, is one of the most fascinating characters in The Stormlight Archive, as his closest supporter early in the series. As a spren, Syl can take on many forms, though her preferred appearance with Kaladin is that of a whimsical young woman with traditionally feminine traits. Milly Alcock would be an excellent choice, having played a mischievous young woman in a fantasy series, winning fans over in House of the Dragon.
How Likely Is A Stormlight Archive Adaptation?
Custom image by Yeider Chacon
There has been talk of an adaptation of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive novels for several years. However, whether one will actually happen – either as a movie or TV series – is uncertain, to say the least. Back in 2016, the rights for The Stormlight Archive as well as the entire Cosmere universe were acquired by DMG Entertainment, the studio who co-produced Marvel’s Iron Man 3 as well as movies like RED, Blockers, and Looper.
At the time, DMG were said to be actively working on an adaptation of The Way Of Kings, the first book in the novel series. The chances of a show or movie based on The Stormlight Archives were, at this time, incredibly promising. DMG also had plans to adapt Mistborn, which delighted Sanderson’s fans as it dangled the prospect of an entire live-action on-screen Sanderson franchise.
However, 2016 was many years ago, and a lot has changed since. In 2020, it was revealed by Sanderson on his website that he’d reacquired the rights to the Cosmere universe from DMG. However, there was one property DMG retained – The Stormlight Archives. This incredibly mixed messaging could have been promising when it came to The Stormlight Archives specifically, and for a while fans were optimistic that the Way Of Kings movie/show would still materialize even if the wider Cosmere shared live-action universe wouldn’t.
Once again, many years have passed since this update. In the time since, there’s been no news on DMG’s The Stormlight Archives adaptation. Many fans online have also began to show the prospect of a Stormlight Archives movie or show with skepticism. Especially since the disappointing ending of Game of Thrones, there are many Sanderson readers who voice the opinion that an adaptation would almost certainly lose the core essence of what makes The Stormlight Archives so endearing.
Still, there have been various attempts in the time since to get a Mistborn movie off the ground (even if the project was put on pause in 2023). The potential The Stormlight Archives movie or TV show isn’t dead in the water, though any predictions around when (or even if) it could arrive are currently nothing but purely speculative.
