Casting Metal Sonic For Sonic The Hedgehog 4: 10 Actors Who’d Be Perfect

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3!The end-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 saw the introduction of two different characters to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise. Both Amy Rose and Metal Sonic made their debut appearances, and with that comes the question of who will play them in the next movie. There are many actors who could play Amy Rose in Sonic 4, but the role of Metal Sonic is arguably more challenging.

Metal Sonic is a unique character to cast compared to the rest of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. This is because, in several different instances, he is simply left without a voice at all, serving as a silent antagonist. There are instances where he is voiced, however, and so now that a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been confirmed, fans have plenty of room to speculate about Metal Sonic’s casting.

Josh Brolin

The Voice Of Thanos Would Be More Than Fitting

Close

Josh Brolin has taken part in a variety of massive films in recent years, with credits including the Dune franchise as well as Deadpool 2. Famously, he played the role of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, lending his voice to one of the most iconic film and comic villains of all time. Not only was his performance imposing, striking fear into the hearts of fans, but it was also filled with emotion.

While Metal Sonic is a robot not exactly known for his big emotions, he is certainly an imposing villain. With appearances including the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA, which came out in 1996, Metal Sonic has become one of the most fearsome Sonic the Hedgehog villains ever. Brolin’s voice would lend well to this facet of the character, adding to the legacy of fear that the character has already cemented.

Vin Diesel

Another Marvel Voice Could Bring A Darker Turn To Metal Sonic

Close

Another actor with a grandiose voice, Vin Diesel has become a household name for performances in franchises such as Fast & Furious and The Chronicles of Riddick. He is no stranger to projects with extensive fandoms, nor is he to voice acting, as he played the beloved character of Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Years ago, Diesel even offered his voice to the iconic and titular character of The Iron Giant.

Not only does he have experience with voice acting and playing these larger-than-life characters, but he is also well-versed in characters with complicated motivations. Metal Sonic is a character such as this, complex despite seeming to be a simple robot created by Doctor Robotnik. Diesel would be perfect in this regard, even adding some star-power to the role in a similar manner to Idris Elba with Knuckles the Echidna.

Javier Bardem

Bardem’s Massive Screen Presence Would Add To Metal Sonic’s Character

Close

Javier Bardem is a massively popular actor who has taken part in some of the best movies of all time. He has played foreboding roles in movies such as Dune, No Country for Old Men, and even Skyfall. Something that seems to come across in all of his performances, for the most part, is the seriousness of character, with Bardem more than capable of leaning into the darker parts of each figure’s personality.

If he were to play the character of Metal Sonic, it would also not be his first time voice acting. He has previously done roles in films such as Spellbound and Automata that were not physical roles, but rather animated or CGI characters. Bardem is also best known for his villainous characters, and his inclusion as the character of Metal Sonic would be sure to excite fans.

7

Keith David

David Has An Impressive Track Record Of Iconic Roles

Close

Having appeared in hundreds of films over the course of his career, Keith David is considered just as much of a voice actor as he is a blockbuster movie star. He has appeared in science fiction classics such as The Thing and Pitch Black, but also in several iconic animated projects such as Coraline, Princess and the Frog, and more recently Hazbin Hotel. David even has experience in acting for video games, with the characters of David Anderson in the Mass Effect trilogy and Arbiter Thel ‘Vadam in Halo 2 being some of the most recognizable.

With so much experience across the board and such a recognizable voice, David would be the perfect candidate for the role of Metal Sonic. He has played heroes and villains alike and has gained a following for his work as a voice actor. Not only could he keep up with actors like Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba who have already been integrated into the series, but he could do so while having an adaptable voice certain to draw in viewers.

6

Clancy Brown

Brown Has Played Countless Roles In Live Action & Animation

Close

Perhaps known best for his role as Mr. Krabs in the long-running SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, Clancy Brown has been acting for a very long time. He has appeared in many different movies and TV series, with a filmography spanning franchises such as Star Wars, DC, and Marvel. More recently, he has played roles such as Salvatore Maroni in The Penguin and Harbinger in John Wick: Chapter 4, showing that even today his acting holds a lot of power in the film industry.

He is known for his impending voice and stage presence, with many of his roles holding a certain intimidation factor. That is not to say that is all he is capable of, as roles such as Hank Anderson in Detroit: Become Human and Zim in Starship Troopers show just how flexible his acting style can be. Because of this, he would also be the perfect person to play Metal Sonic, as he would be able to act in whatever situations the plot happens to throw at the character.

5

Roger Craig Smith

The Modern Voice Of Sonic The Hedgehog

Close

An incredible voice actor in his own right, Roger Craig Smith is the current voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in the video game series. He has been appearing as Sonic for over a decade, with voice performances in games from Sonic Colors to the more recent Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations. He has also been a part of several other projects, even playing the character of Mirage in Apex Legends.

To have an iconic Sonic actor play the villainous copy of their most iconic character would be the perfect way to bring such an important part of the franchise into the film series. Not only would Smith’s inclusion be a great Easter Egg, but he would certainly give an incredible performance. If the movies were to give Metal Sonic a voice of his own, having Smith play the robot would be a great choice.

4

James Spader

Spader’s Underrated Work As Ultron Makes Him A Perfect Choice

Close

Known now for his intimidating voice and distinctly chilling presence, James Spader’s career has changed quite a bit over the years. Beginning his career with roles in films such as the original Stargate and Pretty in Pink, he has since moved on to roles with more gravitas and fear attached to them. These include his roles in The Blacklist, as well as the role of Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

With such a deep and frightening voice, Spader is the ideal choice to play a villain like Metal Sonic. He would be sure to strike fear in the hearts of viewers. Not only that, but he has also seemingly mastered the art of developing a character through his performance. If Metal Sonic were to undergo any sort of character arc or development, Spader would be a strong choice to bring this storyline to life.

3

Bryan Tyree Henry

Who Has Voice Acted In Spider-Man & Transformers

Close

Bryan Tyree Henry has exploded in popularity in recent years, originally rising to stardom due to his main role in the television series Atlanta. He has since appeared in several massive films, with some of the biggest being Bullet Train, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Eternals. He has also taken on several voice acting roles, even taking up the mantle of the iconic character of Megatron in the movie Transformers One.

Throughout Transformers One, Henry stands out and perfectly shows the downfall of Megatron as he slowly succumbs to darkness. He does this all through his voice performance alone, showing an incredible talent for characterization. It is an arc that could resonate with the next Sonic antagonist, depending on the direction they take the story. If Metal Sonic were to receive his own voice, this seasoned actor would also be an excellent choice.

2

Ryan Drummond

Drummond Has Played Metal Sonic Before

Close

One of the few instances where Metal Sonic has been voiced is in the 2004 video game Sonic Heroes, a classic and spiritual successor to the beloved game Sonic Adventure 2, which much of the film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is based on. In Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic is played by the voice actor Ryan Drummond. This is especially important because he also plays Sonic the Hedgehog in these games, serving as the voice actor for Sonic beginning with Sonic Adventure.

Because the voice of Sonic has played Metal Sonic previously, it would be amazing to have the original voice of Sonic the Hedgehog come back as the iconic villain. He has played the character before, making him ideal for the role. The inclusion of Drummond would be a treat for new and old fans alike, offering a different voice to Ben Schwartz’s but in turn, reminding older fans of their past nostalgia for the games.

1

Ben Schwartz

The New Movies Could Take A Lesson From Older Sonic Games & Films

Close

If anyone were to play the character of Metal Sonic, it should be Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog in the movie franchise. More often than not, Metal Sonic is portrayed as mimicking those around him, taking on their voices and learning from there. This is especially evident in the comics, as well as through the portrayal of him by Sonic voice actors throughout the years.

This would allow the films to copy an element of Metal Sonic’s character that has been integral to him as a whole from the very beginning. Copying Sonic’s voice would also be a frightening event to see, offering plenty of opportunities for him to even impersonate Sonic in the conflict. It offers so many avenues for expansion in the future of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, making his inclusion in the end-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 so much more important.
