Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is an online horror game in which four players, called survivors, try to escape a dangerous situation orchestrated by another player, the killer. The killer’s goal is to capture the survivors and sacrifice them to an evil force called the Entity. To survive, the survivors must work together to repair the generator and open the exit gate while avoiding the killer.

The game was first released on Windows in 2016, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017, Switch in 2019, and multiple other platforms in the following years. It was wildly popular, attracting over 60 million players. Originally published by Starbreeze Studios, Behaviour Interactive acquired publishing rights in 2018. The game received mixed reviews, but was a commercial success.

How to play Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is a horror game in which one player takes on the role of the Killer and the other four take on the role of the Survivors. In each match (called a Trial), the Survivors must repair a generator in order to escape, and it is the Killer’s job to grab them and impale them with a hook. If all the survivors escape or only one is left, they can use an escape pod. But if the Killer grabs them, a timer starts and the Survivors must escape before the time runs out or they are sacrificed. The Killer uses different powers, and the Survivors can hide, run away, or use items like flashlights and health kits. The game involves chases, strategy, and teamwork as the Survivors try to outsmart the Killer and complete the escape objective.

Dead by Daylight

The Entity is a strange creature that lives between dimensions and feeds on violence and evil deeds. It summons the Killer, usually a serial killer or someone with a tragic past, to hunt down the Survivors in their twisted worlds. The Entity requires sacrifices to survive, so it forces the Killer to hunt and kill the Survivors, feeding on their emotions and taking a piece of their souls after they die. To keep the hunt going, the Entity traps the Survivors in a dream world, where they are constantly under the threat of the Killer.

After wandering the forest or exploring abandoned places, survivors will find themselves in the world of the evil spirits, disappearing without a trace. Some are taken before dying, while others enter using magical symbols. They gather around campfires between trials, where they rest until the next hunt begins. Each hunt takes place in a realm created by the evil spirits based on the killer’s past. Survivors, if they escape, always return to the campfire, where they can offer items to the evil spirits to help them or ask for forgiveness. The evil spirits watch the hunts unfold, intervening only when they demand those who sacrifice for it.

Each Survivor and Killer has their own backstory, explaining their abilities and how they came to be in the realm of the Entity. These stories are revealed through in-game challenges called “Tomes” that unlock more details about their past. Every few months, Tomes are released along with a Battle Pass called “Rifts” to expand the lore of Dead by Daylight.
