Every Peacock Original Movie Of 2024, Ranked

Peacock did not release as many original movies in 2024 as streamers like Netflix or Disney+ did, but it did have an interesting mix of feature-films and documentaries for subscribers throughout the year. While the streamer is known for being the home to everything that originally aired on NBC, it’s also the streaming home for new releases from Hallmark, and has a huge library of true crime documentaries.

In 2024, Peacock’s original movies included a children’s movie, a remake of an action classic, and a story inspired by true events. Outside of those three movies, all of the rest of its feature-length content were documentaries. Most of it was definitely worth a watch by subscribers.

Many of these Peacock originals have since been made available to rent through other platforms, like AppleTV.

1.5/10 Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate TV-GAnimationActionAdventure

Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate is a Peacock original film from director Eric Fogel. Keith Ferguson replaces Will Ferrell as Megamind, who, this time, must stop his former villainous organization from shooting Metro City into the moon.

Director Eric Fogel Release Date March 1, 2024 Writers Alan Schoolcraft , Brent Simons Cast Scott Adsit , Josh Brener , Keith Ferguson , Tony Hale , Adam Lambert , Jeanine Mason , Laura Post , Chris Sullivan Runtime 83 Minutes

…most critics agree that the original movie is much better.

✕ Remove Ads

This particular movie is part of the Megamind franchise, and it’s in a unique position. It’s a sequel to the 2010 Megamind movie, but it’s also the pilot that set up the series Megamind Rules for Peacock. Unfortunately, critics were not impressed with it.

The movie sees former villain Megamind take on the role of protector of the city. When the Doom Syndicate, a villainous group he used to belong to, enters the scene, he decides to pretend that he’s still the bad guy so they won’t end up as his enemies. That doesn’t last long though, and he ends up fighting them to save the day.

Though there are funny moments in the film, most critics agree that the original movie is much better. For some, it felt like Peacock was simply attempting to cash in on an existing property. Creating a children’s show sequel to a movie that came out 14 years earlier, however, seems like a stretch for a cash grab.

8 Pathological: The Lies of Joran Van Der Sloot

Peacock Takes Another Look At The Confessed Killer

01793828_poster_w780-1.jpg Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot DocumentaryCrime

Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot is a documentary exploring the history of violence and deceit by Joran van der Sloot. It provides rare interviews and fresh perspectives, examining the cases of Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores, tied to his actions.

Director Christopher Cassel Release Date February 27, 2024 Cast Ricardo Flores Runtime 94 minutes

Many streamers have featured specials or documentaries regarding Natalee Holloway’s murder case. All of those specials were made before van der Sloot actually admitted to being responsible for her death. This one was made after he made the admission in 2023.

This documentary is also unique because it doesn’t focus solely on Holloway’s case, which most others do. Instead, it focuses on Holloway’s alleged killer, examining how he became the person who could kill her, lie to her family about it, and then extort them for money that he then used to travel to Peru and murder another woman.

The documentary, unfortunately, follows the trend of giving the spotlight to the killer instead of the victim or the survivors, and it does not offer a lot of information that true crime enthusiasts or those who genuinely want to help on missing persons cases wouldn’t already know.

7 Stormy

A Documentary Spotlighting Stormy Daniels

01788324_poster_w780.jpg Stormy Documentary

Stormy is a biographical film exploring the life of Stormy Daniels, focusing on her personal narrative and experiences that have intertwined with significant events in American cultural and political history. Released in 2024, the film provides insights into her perspective and the social impact of her story.

Director Sarah Gibson Release Date March 8, 2024 Cast Jimmy Kimmel , Stormy Daniels , Rachel Maddow , Demi Delia , Seth Rogen , Michael Avenatti , Donald Trump Runtime 109 minutes

The average television and movie fan likely only knows the name Stormy Daniels because of her name popping up in the news in relationship to former President Donald Trump. This documentary is her attempt to allow the public to see who she really is outside of that scandal.

The documentary follows Daniels on her journey as a mother and advocate, but it does not get to go too far in depth. Much of the documentary is also about her past instead of her present, which critics, rightly, found to be odd.

✕ Remove Ads

The documentary has also been criticized because it features footage originally shot for a different documentary that was never finished. That footage was shot by Denver Nicks, a journalist with whom Daniels had a romantic relationship, which makes it less likely that the feature is an unbiased look at the subject.

TikTok Star Murders examines the lives of husband and wife Ali and Ana Abulaban who were known for their viral TikTok videos and social media presence. The documentary explores the lead-up to Ali murdering his wife and her friend and what was really going on behind the scenes.

On the one hand, the documentary is a great cautionary tale for anyone whose interest in becoming a social media sensation could take a darker turn. On the other hand, the documentary focuses heavily on the couple and leaves out the second victim of the double murder – Rayburn Barron – almost completely. It’s timely and certainly provides a larger story for anyone who followed the news surrounding Ana Abulaban’s death, but it doesn’t feel complete.

5 Gary

A Look At The Life Of Gary Coleman

The key art for the Peacock original documentary Gary features actor Gary Coleman in the middle of the letters of his first name

…gives insight into his private life.

Gary Coleman became a sensation as a child thanks to his charm and comedic timing that just couldn’t be beat at a young age. He could hold his own against the most seasoned of performers. Unfortunately, like many children who grow up in the acting industry, his adult life was in the tabloids more than it involved working. This documentary looks back on how that happened, but it also gives insight into his private life.

In the documentary’s favor are things like never-before-seen footage and new interviews. Those allow the audience a new perspective on Coleman they might not have had before. Some critics, however, were not convinced by the documentary’s attempt to introduce the theory that Coleman was murdered when he died in 2010. There was a feeling that, after all the attempts to tell his story, it was another effort to sensationalize what happened to him.

4 Bosco

Inspired By A Real Prison Break

Bosco 2024 Peacock Movie Poster Bosco RBiographyCrimeDrama

Bosco is a biographical crime-drama film by writer-director Nicholas Manuel Pino, based on Quawntay Adams’s memoir. After having been incarcerated for possession of marijuana and being sentenced to thirty-five years in prison, Quawntay engineers an astounding escape with the help of his significant other to be able to see the birth of his child.

Director Nicholas Manuel Pino Writers Nicholas Manuel Pino Cast Aubrey Joseph , Nikki Blonsky , D.C. Young Fly , Theo Rossi , Thomas Jane , Tyrese Gibson , Vivica A. Fox

Bosco follows a young man who ends up sentenced to 35 years in prison for drug possession. Two years after he is sentenced, he escapes with the help of a woman he meets through a personal ad with the hope of getting to be there for the birth of his first child.

The premise of the movie sounds too outlandish to be true, but it is based on real events. The movie is inspired by the real events of Quawntay Adams’ life. If the true story is not enough to draw in an audience, the cast should be. Aubrey Joseph, who starred in Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, is the prison escapee while Nikki Blonsky, who starred in the Hairspray musical, is the woman who helps him. They are equally fantastic in their roles.

The biggest complaint from critics is that the final act of the movie was a little too rushed, but that doesn’t detract from those performances.

3 Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal

A Look At A Wrestler’s Legacy

Bray Wyatt standing at a desk in the Peacock original documentary about his life

It’s a love letter to an athlete and a sport that is very niche.

Sports enthusiasts often connect with a team or an athlete because the crowd of a live event makes them feel part of something bigger than themselves. That’s especially true in wrestling which has a more theatrical element to it than most sports to. Characters are created and stories told in the ring as fans watch.

Bray Wyatt came from a family of wrestlers, and though he explored other career paths, he came back to wrestling right before an illness would take his life. This documentary explores the lasting impact he has on the sport and fans of it.

While the documentary itself might not be earth-shattering, it will likely provide some nostalgia and much-needed closure for fans who followed his career. It’s a love letter to an athlete and a sport that is very niche.

It’s rare that directors get to remake their own movies, but John Woo does just that with The Killer. The 2024 Peacock original movie is a remake of his 1989 Hong Kong action movie. It moves the action from Hong Kong to Paris. A remake had been in development since 1992.

Here, Nathalie Emmanuel stars as an assassin living in Paris. She has been mostly employed by a man working for a criminal kingpin. When she’s hired for a job that involves killing a group at a nightclub, a singer ends up in the crossfire, and she decides to let the singer, blinded from the event, live. That act of mercy, however, leads her down a path to realize that her cushy job might be under fire as someone is getting ready to make a move on the man she works for from the inside.

The action scenes are great, and The Killer is simply another sign that Nathalie Emmanuel needs to be given more starring roles instead of being relegated to sidekick or love interest in so many action movies.

1 Queer Planet

Documenting Sexuality In The Animal Kingdom

There are a lot of nature documentaries out there. Very few of them, however, are marked as something to be released during Pride Month. Peacock did that with Queer Planet, providing a new perspective for many on the animal kingdom.

The documentary examines the reality of sexuality in the animal kingdom. From lesbian primates to lion “bromances” and more, the documentary strives to show that there is nothing unnatural about being queer. It shows several different animal groups that engage in same-sex relationships, who co-parent offspring, and more.

Not only is the documentary informative for those interested in sexuality or nature or both, but it’s also beautifully shot. Part of the appeal of nature documentaries is how close of a look they can provide at the beautiful animals that people cannot get close to themselves. Queer Planet does that masterfully and is the best of Peacock’s original movies and documentaries in 2024.
