When you encounter enemies, battles happen right where you are. Clive fights using attacks, dodges, and special powers from creatures called Eikons. Clive can switch between these powers during fights to create powerful combos. There’s also a tactic called ‘Stagger’ where you build up damage to stun enemies and hit them harder.
At the beginning, you can choose an easier ‘Story’ mode or a normal mode. Once you finish the game, you can play again in New Game+ mode with your old stats and items, or try a harder ‘Final Fantasy’ mode. There’s even an arcade mode that grades your combat skills and tougher challenges called Ultimaniac Mode. These modes let Clive upgrade weapons, and accessories and face specific challenges.
Final Fantasy XVI Plot
In Final Fantasy XVI, the story revolves around Clive, who used to protect his younger brother Joshua. During a ceremony to awaken Joshua’s powers, their father is killed, triggering Joshua’s transformation into the Phoenix Eikon. Unfortunately, Ifrit, another powerful creature, emerges and kills the Phoenix. Clive swears revenge but is enslaved in an enemy army due to his lack of special powers.
Thirteen years later, Clive deserts the army to free his childhood friend, Jill, who was enslaved as a Dominant. Together with a man named Cid, they seek Ifrit’s Dominant. Clive gains the power of an Eikon named Garuda after a fight, but things go wrong, leading to tragic events. Clive discovers he can transform into Ifrit, the one who killed Joshua.
As they witness the suffering caused by the nations’ Mothercrystals draining the land’s life force, Clive, Jill, and Cid decide to destroy these crystals causing the Blight. They encounter an otherworldly being called Ultima, which attempts to possess Clive. Joshua, who survived Ifrit’s attack, intervenes and contains Ultima within himself.
Misled by revenge, Hugo, a friend of Benedikta, is manipulated into attacking Clive. Clive destroys the Mothercrystal of the Iron Kingdom and faces Hugo, who transforms into a raging Titan. Clive gains control of Ifrit and defeats Hugo. Later, Dion accidentally kills his father and transforms into Bahamut. Clive helps Joshua defeat Bahamut, and the tragedy escalates as Anabella, Clive’s mother, becomes unhinged and kills herself.
Clive continues fighting Ultima’s agents, ultimately revealing Ultima’s plan to use him as a vessel by absorbing Eikons. Clive, Joshua, and Dion confront Ultima in his sky fortress. Dion falls in battle, and Ultima fatally wounds Joshua. Joshua sacrifices himself to give Clive his Eikon. After a fierce battle, Clive defeats Ultima, heals Joshua, and destroys the final Mothercrystal to rid Valisthea of magic.
In a glimpse into the future, magic becomes a myth, and peace prevails. Post-release expansions ‘Echoes of the Fallen’ and ‘The Rising Tide’ delve into the world’s elements, revealing more battles and Clive’s quest against artificial Mothercrystals and the Eikon Leviathan in the land of Misidia.
