Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second in a trilogy of remakes of the 1997 classic, and continues the story of Final Fantasy VII Remake. After escaping Midgar, players will control Cloud Strife, a former Shinra soldier turned environmental activist from Snow Crash. The story revolves around fighting Shinra’s plunder of the Earth’s life energy and fighting the resurrected soldier Sephiroth.
The game combines real-time exploration and combat with a vast overworld. Objective markers guide players through the main and side quests, while the Chocobo mount speeds up movement. Rebirth improves the action-oriented combat and the real-time battle (ATB) system, allowing seamless character switching during gameplay. The “synergy” mechanic, which returns from the DLC “Episode INTERmission”, is introduced, enabling coordinated attacks at the expense of a slower ATB bar filling speed.
In addition to reimagining elements of the original game, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH places an emphasis on character development and a rich narrative structure. From open-world exploration to complex combat mechanics, the game’s multiple features make for an engaging and immersive experience for players seeking both nostalgia and a new perspective.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Summary
In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the story begins when Zack Fair arrives at Midgar with Cloud, who is in a coma. They face an imminent crisis as the planet runs out of Mako, which leads to the end of the world in Zack’s timeline. Shinra captures Barret and Tifa, while Red XIII sacrifices himself to free Aerith. Zack takes Cloud and Aerith to Elmira’s house to hide, and seeks help from Biggs, the last survivor of Avalanche from another timeline.

As the storyline returns to the original timeline, Cloud reveals his past with Sephiroth. Five years ago, they investigated the Mako Reactor in Nibelheim, where Sephiroth’s madness broke out. Cloud, who has lost his memory, hunts down Sephiroth, while Tifa shares her confusion about Cloud’s presence during these events.
The team faces challenges tracking down the mysterious “Black Robe” and encountering the Weapon, the embodiment of the planet’s guardian. The stakes are heightened by a split among the Whisperers and Sephiroth’s sinister plan to summon a meteor. The story culminates in a battle with Sephiroth, where the timelines briefly converge. Aerith attempts the Cetra ritual, leading to a climactic confrontation that culminates in Sephiroth’s defeat.
Despite their victory, the team mourns Aerith’s death, while Cloud, seemingly unaware of her alternate incarnation, prepares to continue his pursuit of Sephiroth northward. The story leaves some lingering questions about Cloud’s perspective on the alternate events, as well as the mystery surrounding Aerith’s existence in that timeline.
