In the world of Final Fantasy XIV, there is a place called Hydaelyn, a fictional world with many different landscapes spread across all continents. The main focus is a region called Eorzea, which is home to four large cities: Gridania in the dense forest, Ur’dach in the trade-focused desert, and Lim on the seafaring island Sar Lominsa and Ishgard in the Snowy Mountains.
Eorzea was once part of an alliance, but Ishgard left because of the threat from the Garlean Empire, which had taken control of other continents. There are also different groups like elves and kobolds, as well as places like Sarlayan, the city of scholars, and Aramigo, which was occupied by the Garlean Empire.
Eorzea’s history is divided into a good era known as the “Astral” Age and a bad era caused by the Catastrophe known as the “Shadow” Age. The most recent disaster, the Seventh Shadow Catastrophe, occurred when the Garlean Empire attempted to crash a weapons satellite called Dalamud into Eorzea. Although the adventurers thwarted their plans, it unleashed the ancient dragon Bahamut, causing a huge disaster. A powerful mage named Louisois sacrificed himself to trap Bahamut, and the adventurers were sent into the future to get there if they were needed again. Meanwhile, the Garlean Empire is dealing with its own problems as the Emperor falls ill.
