General Hospital is a popular American soap opera that holds the record as the longest-running soap opera in the United States and the second-longest-running soap opera in American history, after Guiding Light. The show first aired on April 1, 1963, and is currently the third-longest-running scripted drama in the world, after British TV series Archer and Coronation Street. The soap was originally made in a hospital in an unknown city, but was later named Port Charles, New York in the 1970s.

The show was created by Frank and Doris Hursley and has featured John Beradino and Emily MacLough from the beginning Emily McLaughlin starred, and Rachel Ames joined a year later, becoming the longest-serving actress on the ABC soap opera. General Hospital expanded from 30 to 45 minutes in 1976 and then to a full hour in 1978.
Since the late 1970s, most storylines have centered around the Quartermaines and Spencer families. Notably, the soap opera became hugely popular in the early 1980s with iconic “supercouple” Luke and Laura, whose 1981 wedding was the highest-rated in American soap opera history.
Over the years, General Hospital has featured numerous celebrity guest appearances, including Roseanne Barr, James Franco and Elizabeth Taylor. It moved to HDTV in 2009, becoming the first ABC soap opera. As of 2010, it became the longest-running soap opera in the United States, becoming ABC’s last soap opera after the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live in 2011. The show celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 and reached its 15,000th episode on June 22, 2022.
