The film’s script was inspired by Daniel P. Mannix’s book “Those Who Are Dying,” and Ridley Scott joined as director after DreamWorks acquired it. The film was shot at Fort Ricassoli in Malta from January to May 1999 and encountered difficulties due to the unfinished script.
The actors expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the script, leading to multiple rewrites. Unfortunately, Oliver Reed died of a heart attack before completing his role, and a digital double was created for his remaining scenes. During the battle, Commodus, accustomed to his privileges, asked a guard for a sword, but the guard refused. Ultimately, both men were killed in the battle. Maximus emerged victorious, bringing justice to his fellow gladiators and advocating for political reform.
In the final showdown, Maximus defeated Commodus, ending the emperor’s tyrannical rule and avenging his family and the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. His sacrifice and bravery inspired the people and left an everlasting legacy as a hero who fought for justice and honor.

Maximus learns that his former legions remain loyal and plans to escape Rome with the help of Commodus’s sister Lucilla and the senator Gracchus. However, Commodus discovered the plot and threatened Lucilla and her son. In the ensuing chaos, Maximus’ friends sacrifice themselves to help him escape.

In an effort to regain public support, Commodus challenged Maximus to a fatal duel in the Colosseum. Before the game, Commodus wounded Maximus, but the heroic general still defeated him. After Commodus’ death, Maximus petitioned for political reform and the freedom of his gladiator allies before his death.
In his final moments, Maximus imagined being reunited with his family in the afterlife. His allies paid tribute and carried his body out of the arena. Juba later visited the Colosseum and honored Maximus by burying statues of his wife and son where he died.

“Gladiator” was released on May 5, 2000 and achieved box office success. The film grossed $34.8 million during its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing film of the weekend. Retaining the top spot for two weekends in a row and a strong run in the top ten for ten consecutive weeks.
Overall, Gladiator grossed $187.7 million in the United States and Canada, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2000. Internationally, it grossed over $272.9 million, bringing its global total to over $460.6 million against a budget of $103 million. Although total attendance fell 2.5% that year, rising ticket prices helped 2000 set a new domestic box office record of $7.7 billion.
Gladiator’s positive word-of-mouth and critical acclaim contributed to its success and helped improve DreamWorks’ fortunes.
