People loved the game because it combined jumping and puzzle-solving into a fun and exciting adventure. The game was also praised for its beautiful graphics. The success of Mario vs. Donkey Kong didn’t stop there – it became so popular that it spawned more games in the eponymous series.
The first sequel, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: Mini-March, launched on the Nintendo DS in September 2006, continuing the fun of the game. Now, fast forward to February 16, 2024, Nintendo released a remake of the original game for the Nintendo Switch. This means that even after all these years, people still love and enjoy the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.
The remaster allows old fans and new players to experience the classic game with some modern improvements that show the timelessness and influence of the series. So if you’re a fan or just curious, you can now enjoy the magic of Mario vs. Donkey Kong on Nintendo Switch.
Mario vs Donkey Kong Gameplay
In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, players play as Mario on a mission to catch Donkey Kong, who has stolen a bunch of mini Mario toys from a toy factory. The game plays like a puzzle and platformer, similar to the old Donkey Kong games on the Game Boy. Mario has some cool moves like handstands and somersaults that make it fun to make your way through the levels.
The game has various scenes, such as a lava field and a construction site, each with its own challenges. The game has five types of levels. In the first level, Mario needs to find a key, use it to open a locked door, and then get a Mini Mario toy at the end. The second type of level is to guide the six Mini Mario toys to the toy box and ensure their safety. The third type is a Boss level, where Mario must fight Donkey Kong to enter the next world.
The fourth type is called “Advanced Levels” and are slightly more difficult. Mario must use a key to activate Mini Mario and then lead him to the door. These advanced levels are more difficult than normal levels. The fifth type introduces Expert Levels, which you can attempt after completing the main world and collecting enough stars.
In the Expert levels, Mario must get the key and use it to open the door, just like in the main levels, but these levels are the most difficult. In Plus and Expert modes, the level is completed when Mario reaches the door, while the main levels may require more parts to be completed.

On February 16, 2024, Nintendo released a remake of the classic game Mario vs. Donkey Kong exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. This updated version features enhanced graphics and introduces local co-op multiplayer functionality, allowing players to team up with Toad as a second character.
Interestingly, the original Mario vs. Donkey Kong, along with nine other Game Boy Advance games, were initially offered to Nintendo 3DS owners through the Ambassador Program. This unique offer was extended to those who purchased a 3DS system before the August 11, 2011 price cut.
The Ambassador Program was available worldwide, and users could access the games if they entered the Nintendo eShop before a specified date. Although the game was released to Ambassador users on December 16 of the same year, it was not available for purchase to the public on the Nintendo 3DS.
This is in stark contrast to the Wii U version, which eventually went on sale in 2017. The decision to make the game available exclusively to early Nintendo 3DS owners created a special experience for those who qualified for the Ambassador Program.
Additionally, a 2024 Nintendo Switch remaster will bring this classic title to a new audience, providing not only a nostalgia trip for long-time fans but also an exciting opportunity for new players to enjoy enhanced graphics and co-op gameplay on the latest gaming platform.
