Throughout the series, players encounter challenges, solve puzzles, and engage in the iconic rivalry between Mario and Donkey Kong. Over the years, the games have evolved, introducing new elements and gameplay mechanics while maintaining the core theme of puzzle-solving and platforming fun.
How many worlds are there in Mario vs. Donkey Kong?
There are eight worlds to explore in Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Nintendo Switch. This is an expansion of the Game Boy Advance original, which had six worlds. These worlds take Mario to familiar locations, such as Donkey Kong’s jungle and volcano. Each world is divided into six two-part stages, for a total of 48 main stages in the game.
The objectives of these stages vary, from delivering a key to a locked door in the first part, to collecting one of the lost Mini Mario toys in the second part. Along the way, players will also encounter three gift boxes in each stage, which introduce a new element and require more careful puzzle solving compared to the original GBA version. As players progress through the main stages of each world, they will unlock Lemmings-style levels that guide the rescued Mini Mario to collect items.

After completing the main stage and these bonus levels, players will face a boss battle with Donkey Kong, which is reminiscent of the two characters’ earliest appearances in arcades. Compared to the original Game Boy Advance version, the Nintendo Switch remake will expand to eight worlds, providing players with a wider and more diverse adventure, providing additional challenges and experiences in the updated gameplay.
How many levels are there in Mario vs. Donkey Kong?
There are a total of 130 levels to play in Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Nintendo Switch. That’s up from the original game’s 90 levels and 12 expert levels. The levels are spread across different world themes, including two new themes for the remake – an ice cave called Slippery Peak and a circus amusement park called Fun Miniland.
Each world has its own unique challenges, such as slippery ground, icicle spikes, and windblown flowers. In addition, players can unlock 16 expert levels that present a tougher challenge to the player’s skills. The game also introduces local co-op mode, allowing one player to control Mario and the other to control Todd, adding spice to the gameplay.
To make the game more accessible to players of all skill levels, the remake includes a “casual” mode where players do not lose a life if they are hit by an obstacle. Instead, they are taken back to a checkpoint and can try again using a bubble system similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series.
Players have the flexibility to choose between this more forgiving mode and the traditional “Classic” mode, where obstacles can result in the loss of lives. Overall, with its increased number of levels, new worlds, and various features, Mario vs. Donkey Kong offers an engaging and diverse gaming experience for new and old fans alike.
