Unicorn Overlord

Unicorn Overlord is a cool new game from Vanillaware and Atlus. The game is about strategy and combat. You can play it on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S from March 8, 2024. The story takes place in a place called Fevrith, where a great war is taking place.

This guy named Alan was once a prince, but was driven out of his kingdom, and he wants to take his kingdom back from the Zenovalan Empire. Their leader is a bad guy named General Valmore. You can control Alan and his companions as they try to gather more friends and fight back against the empire. The battles are massive and happen in real time, so you have to act fast and smart.

In 2014, a man named Takafumi Noma came up with the idea for Unicorn Overlord. He got the go-ahead from Vanillaware big boss George Kamitani to make the game. Takafumi did a lot of work on the game, such as directing, programming, and drawing. He wanted Unicorn Overlord to feel like those great strategy games from the 90s, but with a modern twist.

It took a long time to make this game, about ten years, because they were also working on other projects at the time. But finally, it’s almost ready for us to play! Oh, and the music in the game was made by a team called Basiscape, led by Mitsuhiro Kaneda. So, get ready to lead Alain to victory and take back his kingdom in Unicorn Overlord!

Unicorn Overlord Gameplay

In Unicorn Overlord, players will play as the exiled prince Alain and lead the liberation army on an epic journey through the magical world of Fevrith. The game is based on strategy and adventure, and players can explore towns, gather allies and participate in fierce battles.

As players explore the vast world, they will guide Alan through towns where they can visit blacksmiths and merchants to equip their army. Along the way, they will encounter enemies represented by elves, adding an element of danger to their journey.

In terms of combat, Unicorn Overlord combines real-time action with tactical decision-making. Players can control up to six characters, each with their own unique abilities and skills. The number of units a player can deploy depends on a resource called “courage,” which is gained by winning battles.

In combat, players will need to strategically deploy their troops on the battlefield and use their skills to defeat their opponents. Battles can be fought in a variety of scenarios, from open fields to bustling cities, each with its own challenges and obstacles.

One of the cool features of Unicorn Overlord is the ability to pause the game in the middle of a battle to rethink your strategy and inspect your units. This adds extra depth to the game and lets you fine-tune your strategy for each battle.

As players progress through the game, they will unlock new character classes, abilities, and even online multiplayer arenas for extra challenges. With its charming 2D art style and engaging gameplay, Unicorn Overlord offers hours of fun for fans of tactical RPGs. So gear up, gather your allies, and prepare for an epic adventure in Unicorn Overlord!

Unicorn Overlord Development

The development of Unicorn Overlord began in 2014 when Takafumi Noma, a member of the Vanillaware team, came up with the concept. This was about a decade before the game hit store shelves. Vanillaware big boss George Kamitani approached Noma in 2013 after they finished Dragon’s Crown. He asked Noma to make a new fantasy game, and Noma jumped at the opportunity.

With Kamiya’s support, Noma served as director, character designer, and lead programmer for Unicorn Overlord. Another person named Wataru Nakanishi helped design the game, while Atlus’ Akiyasu Yamamoto served as producer.

The development of Unicorn Overlord was moving pretty slowly because Vanillaware was busy with other projects at the time. They were working on porting old games to new consoles, and they were also working on a game called 13 Sentinels: The Ring of Defense. Noma even got involved in the programming of 13 Sentinels.

Noma and Nakanishi worked closely together to determine the gameplay. They wanted Unicorn Overlord to be different from Dragon’s Crown, which was more like an arcade game. Instead, they aimed to create a game similar to classic 90s tactical role-playing games, providing players with fast-paced action and freedom.

They wanted Unicorn Overlord to be the “rebirth” of tactical RPGs, blending old-school charm with modern accessibility. Noma, whose primary job is as a programmer, was responsible for designing the characters and giving them their own art style. The game’s art style was decided early on, drawing inspiration from classic games while keeping it fresh. And the music, led by Mitsuhiro Kaneda and his Basiscape team, fits the game’s atmosphere perfectly.
