Tekken 8
Tekken 8 is a new fighting game released by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on January 26, 2024. It is the eighth main game in the Tekken series. The story mode, titled “Dark Awakening”, takes place six months after the last game and revolves around the final battle between father and son Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama. Jin Kazama’s goal is to end the chaos within their family by defeating his father.
The game introduces 32 characters, including returning favorites and new additions, each of which contributes to the overall narrative. The development of Tekken 8 was hinted at in August 2022 and officially announced the following month during Sony’s State of Play event. Made using Unreal Engine 5, the game focuses on a more aggressive tone and enhances the combat elements of the previous installment.
New game mechanics have been added, such as the “heat” system and the “tornado” attack, as well as updated character models and voice acting. Online modes include Arcade Missions, which features tournaments, arcade features, customizable avatars, and a special in-game currency. Stability testing began in July and October 2023, with a demo available on PlayStation and Xbox Series in December.
Tekken 8 Gameplay
Tekken 8’s fighting style is similar to previous Tekken games. Game producer Katsuhiro Harada said that Tekken 8 is designed to be “more aggressive” than previous games, rewarding players who take an active offensive approach rather than a defensive one.
To achieve this, Tekken 8 introduces a new system called “Heat”. When a character enters the “Heat” state, it not only causes chip damage and unlocks more moves, but also changes the properties of certain moves, such as heavy defense breakthrough. Fighters in this state can sprint to cancel their moves. The timer of Heat can be stopped using a fighter’s move combination, and a defensive heavy attack or Heat state character will cause chip damage, allowing players to restore health by attacking opponents.

The game also brings technical updates and feature remakes. The “Rage” system from the previous game returns, but with improvements such as separating “Rage Drive” and remaking it into “Heat Smash,” a super move related to the heat system. The “Spiral” mechanism is replaced by the “Tornado” expander, and some stages have hazards such as harder walls and floors that require multiple hits to break, and explosive elements that cause opponents to explode upwards.
TEKKEN 8 aims to create a more cinematic fighting experience, emphasizing stage destruction and specific character reactions. All character models and voice acting are brand new, with no reuse of content from previous titles. Online mode features “Arcade Mission” battle lobbies with arcade environments, regular online battles, and tournaments. Players can customize their avatars using the in-game currency “Fight Coins.” TEKKEN 8 is powered by the next-generation Unreal Engine 5, making it the first major fighting game to use this advanced engine.

Tekken 8 plot
Six months after Heihachi’s disappearance, Jin Kazama and his allies Lars Alexanderson and Li Chaolan attempt to confront Kazuya Mishima in New York. The battle is extremely horrific, resulting in millions of casualties. Kazuya Mishima appears in his demon form and announces a new Iron Fist Tournament, in which representatives from all nations must participate. The winning nation will be spared, while the losing nation will face destruction.
After recovering from his injuries, Jin finds that he can no longer activate his demonic powers at will. He participates in the Japanese tournament qualifiers and meets Reina, a student at Mishima Institute of Technology who looks like his grandfather Heihachi. After qualifying for the main tournament, Jin discovers that Reina is a member of the Mishima family, and he secretly wants to understand how Jin and Kazuya activate their demonic powers.
Meanwhile, in Italy, Claudio Serafino, Zafina, Ling Xiaoyu and others watch the match. Zafina warns that Kazuya must be stopped and finds Jin. Niklas Klisson reveals information about the demon gene and Azazel to Yggdrasil. During the main event, Kazuya absorbs Azazel’s power and becomes a true demon. Jin, Leroy Smith and others try to resist Kazuya. Claudio uses his power to injure Kazuya, seemingly sacrificing himself.
Jin believes he can regain control of his demonic powers and travels to the Kazama Sanctuary. Kazuya is determined to destroy the rebels, but is opposed by Yggdrasil, the United Nations Independent Forces, and former tournament fighters.
In a battle with his subconscious, Jin confronts his demon self, eventually accepting and fully controlling his powers. He saves Lars from Kazuya’s attack, and has a final battle with Kazuya to purge each other’s demon genes. Jin awakens and regains his angelic form, defeats Kazuya, and leaves with Tama. In the post-credits scene, Reina, who was thought dead, survives Kazuya’s attack and reveals her demon genes, vowing to avenge her father, Heihachi.
