Hozier’s early life
Hozier, formerly known as Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, was born on March 17, 1990 in Newcastle, County Wicklow, Ireland. His parents, Raine Hozier-Byrne and John Byrne, introduced him to a diverse musical environment, including blues, jazz and soul. Although Hozier developed an early connection with music, he initially considered himself a “class clown” and an “inattentive student” during his school years, describing it as a “monotonous nightmare.”
At 15, he began writing songs, taught himself guitar, and joined the school choir. Raised in a family that converted from Catholicism to Quakerism, Hozier attended Delgany National School and later St. Gerald’s School before receiving a musical education at Trinity College, Dublin.
His musical journey began in 2012 when he joined the Trinity Orchestra as a backing vocalist for Billy Ocean. This early exposure laid the foundation for his later success in the music industry.
