He is a right-handed batsman and off-spinner who plays for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the domestic cricket league and Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Ahmed made his debut for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2010. In 2011, he made his A-list debut for the same team. He made his debut for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the 2020 season in 2012.
Ahmed was selected for the Pakistan national team for the 2015-16 tour of New Zealand. He made his One-Day International (ODI) debut on 13 November 2015 against New Zealand in Hamilton. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut on 4 March 2016 against Sri Lanka in Mirpur.
Ahmed has been a regular member of Pakistan’s ODI and T20I teams since 2016. He also played for Pakistan A team. In 2018-19, Ahmed was the leading run-scorer in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy for Suibei Gas Pipelines Limited, scoring 660 runs in seven games.
