Is Dear Evan Hansen a true story?

Dean Evan Hansen loosely based on a true story. The essence of “Dear Evan Hansen” is loosely intertwined with Pasek’s personal involvement in an incident at a suburban Philadelphia high school. The incident involved an accidental overdose of one of his classmates.

The musical draws on that experience and expands on it, exploring themes of social anxiety, suicide and grief. The story follows Evan Hansen, a high school student with social anxiety disorder who writes a letter to himself every day. When classmate Connor Murphy commits suicide, Evan’s letter is found in Connor’s pocket. Evan took advantage of the situation and lied to Connor’s family and friends, claiming that he and Connor were best friends.

The musical was praised for its honest and nuanced portrayal of mental illness and suicide. However, it has also been criticized for its portrayal of Evan, who some viewed as manipulative and self-serving.

Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen is a 2021 American coming-of-age musical film directed by director Stephen Chbosky and written by Steven Levenson. The script draws from the stage musical of the same name, which was co-written by Levenson, Benji Pasek and Justin Paul.

The central role of Evan Hansen is played by Ben Platt, who reprises the role he originally played on stage six years ago. The cast includes big names like Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nick Dodani, Colton Ryan, Danny Pino, Julianne Moore and Amy Adams.

Dear Evan Hansen debuted at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2021, as an opening night premiere. The film was subsequently released in the United States on September 24, 2021, distributed by Universal Pictures.

However, the film’s box office performance did not meet expectations. Critics tended to be negative, with much criticism directed at the decision to cast then-27-year-old Ben Platt as a high school student.

Some believe the casting was influenced by nepotism, as his father, Mark Platt, was involved as a producer on the project.

Other criticisms were leveled at the film’s direction, script, deviations from the source material, and its depiction of mental health issues. Still, against this grim backdrop, some of the supporting cast’s performances were praised, providing a glimmer of hope amid mixed reviews.

Dear Evan Hansen synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Evan Hansen is struggling with the stress of social anxiety and depression. His therapist suggested a therapeutic exercise of writing affirmation letters, focusing on why “today is going to be a good day.” After he broke his arm falling from a tree to help him make friends, his mother, Heidi, suggested he have his classmates sign a cast. Evan’s broken arm became a window of opportunity for social interaction.

At school, Evan follows his therapist’s advice and begins writing a letter to himself, wondering if anyone will notice that he is leaving this world (“Waving Through the Window”).

Unexpectedly, his classmate Connor Murphy, who also had his own struggles, offered to sign his cast in a rather overbearing manner. Connor discovered Evan’s self-report letter and became angry when he read Evan’s feelings for his sister Zoe.

Connor mistakenly thought that Evan intended to anger him, so he took the letter and left angrily. Tragically, three days later, Evan learned that Connor had committed suicide. In a twisting misunderstanding, Connor’s parents, Cynthia and Larry, believe that the letter Evan wrote was a suicide note addressed to Evan and signed by Connor himself.

Evan is invited to dinner at Murphy’s house, and in the face of Cynthia’s pressure, he decides to build a friendship between himself and Connor. He made up a story about them never actually going to the orchard, solidifying his lie with fake emails with the help of family friend Jared (“Sincerely, Me”). Connor’s sister Zoe was confused by the mention of her name in her brother’s suicide note.

As the Murphy family struggled with grief, another classmate named Alana, who had similar social difficulties as Evan, came up with “The Connor Plan” to keep Connor’s memory alive.

They plan to kick things off with a rally. Evan speaks at the rally, sharing fictional stories of his friendship with Connor and their orchard adventures. The speech quickly went viral, becoming a beacon of hope for people dealing with mental health issues (“You Will Be Found”). Zoe was moved by Evan’s words and expressed her gratitude.

Evan and Alana are collaborating on a crowdfunding campaign through The Connor Project to reopen the orchard. In the midst of this, Evan became increasingly absorbed in life with the Murphy family, away from his mother, therapy, and his true responsibilities. His relationship with Zoe also becomes romantic. Evan’s mother, Heidi, highlighted her pride by refusing financial assistance from the Murphy family.

Alana has doubts about Evan and Connor’s relationship. To counter this, Evan sends Alana his therapy letter and passes it off as Connor’s suicide note. Alana shared online in an effort to increase funding for Connor’s project (“Anonymous (Reprise)”).

However, her actions backfired as the internet questioned why Connor would write a suicide note to Evan instead of his family, accusing the Murphy family of neglect. Although Alana deleted the letter from social media, it was too late—the damage had been done.

During a heated argument between Cynthia and Larry, Evan finally confessed the truth. Despite the heartache, Connor’s parents decided to protect Evan from the consequences, still treating him as a surrogate son. Evan’s relationship with Zoe ended, and he finally admitted to his mother that the injury to his arm was actually a suicide attempt.

Heidi expresses remorse for not recognizing Evan’s pain and discusses the impact his absentee father has had on him (“So Big / So Little”). Determined to take responsibility, Evan recorded and uploaded a video admitting the truth.

Isolated once again, Evan seeks comfort in Connor’s favorite books and reaches out to those who truly understand him. He received a video of Connor playing music in rehab and shared it with the Murphys, Alana and Jared (“Get Closer”).

Eventually, he meets Zoe at the newly reopened orchard in Connor’s memory. They reconcile, and Zoe explains that she wants Evan to see the orchard, a place Connor truly cherishes. Evan wrote a letter to himself, promising to be honest, not to hide anything, and urging himself to keep moving forward in life (“A Little Closer (Reprise)”).
