However, despite being a critically acclaimed card strategy game, Legends of Runeterra continues to face financial challenges, with development and support costs exceeding the revenue it generates. To address this, Riot Games is making changes to the Legends of Runeterra team, reducing its size and refocusing it on Champions Path.
Eric Shen (aka Riot Shen1138) will lead the restructured team. They hope to focus their efforts on Champions Path to bring a more sustainable business model to Legends of Runeterra. Riot Games has yet to reveal an updated roadmap for Legends of Runeterra, but they have scheduled a conversation with key people on February 2, including Dave Guskin, who will be stepping down as executive producer and game director but will remain at Riot.
This chat may provide more insight into the future direction of Legends of Runeterra, but as of now, there’s no indication that the game will shut down in 2024.

Legends of Runeterra
Legends of Runeterra (LoR) is a digital card game created and published by Riot Games in 2020. The developers drew inspiration from the popular Magic: The Gathering card game, aiming to make a similar game with a lower barrier to entry. Since its launch in April 2020, the game has been free-to-play, with revenue coming from optional cosmetic purchases. Players can enjoy the game on Microsoft Windows, iOS, and Android platforms.
In LoR, players compete in one-on-one matches, trying to reduce their opponent’s health to zero using a variety of cards. These cards are divided into ten different areas, each with a unique play style. The game’s combat rhythm is interesting, with players alternating between offense and defense in each round.
The game incorporates characters from Riot Games’ multiplayer online battle arena League of Legends. The fictional world of Runeterra is enriched through short stories, comics, and anime series, adding depth and themes to the game’s cards. Critics praised Legends of Runeterra’s player-friendly progression system, simple-to-understand gameplay, and impressive visuals, earning the game several industry awards.
Legends of Runeterra gameplay
Legends of Runeterra is a digital card game where two players face off, each with a Nexus with 20 hit points. The goal is to reduce the opponent’s Nexus to zero hit points to win. Players start with a hand of four cards, with the option to exchange a random card from the deck. Each round, both players draw a card and play it by expending mana, which increases each round, up to a maximum of ten cards.

A unique aspect is the pace of combat, which is determined by “attack markers” that indicate which player can attack and who can defend. This alternates between players each round, visually denoting attack with a sword and defense with a shield. Certain cards allow you to attack even if you don’t have a marker.
Cards in the game belong to specific regions, and a deck can contain cards from up to two regions, each with its own gameplay. Unlike other card games, there are no neutral cards that can be used in all decks. There are three types of cards: League of Legends characters, followers, and spells. Heroes represent League of Legends characters and can be upgraded to become more powerful versions. Unit cards (both heroes and non-heroes) have attack and health statistics that determine the damage caused and stamina.
Spell cards come in different speeds – slow, fast, burst, or focused – which affects when they can be played and how opponents respond. The Monuments of Power expansion introduces Landmarks, unique cards with effects and countdown mechanics that are played using regular unit mana.
