Yakuza: Infinite Fortune is a role-playing video game developed by Yakuza Studio and published by SEGA. It is the ninth mainline game in the Yakuza series and a direct sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2020) and the spin-off Yakuza Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (2023). The game stars Ichiban Kasuga, the protagonist of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Kazuma Kiryu, the original protagonist of the series.

Set in Hawaii, the series’ first overseas location, while incorporating familiar Japanese settings, the story revolves around Kasuga and Kiryu teaming up to help Kasuga find and reunite with her mother in Hawaii, while Kiryu battles lung cancer. Yakuza: Infinite Fortune was released on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and received positive reviews from critics upon launch.

The game combines role-playing elements with a compelling narrative, where players follow characters on their journeys, tackle challenges and form alliances. The addition of the Hawaiian setting adds a new dimension to the series, and the game’s success is reflected in the critical acclaim of players and critics alike.

Is Like a Dragon: Unlimited Wealth a sequel?

Yes, Yakuza: Infinite Fortune is indeed a sequel. It continues the story of the previous games in the series. The game tells the story of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and its spin-off, Yakuza Gaiden: The Man Who Erase His Name. These games were released in November 2023. In Infinite Fortune, players will encounter the return of Kasuga Ichiban, the protagonist introduced in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

In addition, the original Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu will also return. Although “Infinite Fortune” brings a new beginning of some kind, it does not completely break away from the roots of the Yakuza series. Players who have experienced the previous game will find that the story and characters in “Infinite Fortune” are familiar.

The game’s story continues the journey of Kasuga Ichiban and Kiryu Kazuma, and builds on the storyline of the previous games. SEGA and developer Yakuza chose to maintain continuity and connection with the established storyline, ensuring that players can seamlessly dive into the latest installment while still feeling connected to the gangster saga.

Like a Dragon Unlimited Wealth Game

In the gameplay of “Yakuza: Infinite Fortune”, players will control Kasuga Ichiban and Kiryu Kazuma, as well as their teammates, to explore Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama and Honolulu City in Hawaii. The familiar Kamurocho from the previous game is also used as a third location. Similar to the previous game in the series, “Yakuza: Infinite Fortune”, the battle system is turn-based, allowing players to strategically choose actions for each character.

Each character can be picked from a variety of “classes,” which are like classes that give them unique abilities and play styles. Kiryu’s special class is called “Dragon of Dojima,” and it allows him to switch between different fighting styles and temporarily engage in real-time combat, reminiscent of the fighting gameplay from earlier games.

The game includes a variety of mini-games, including classics such as karaoke, darts, and mahjong, as well as arcade games such as Virtua Fighter 3tb, Sega Bass Fishing, and SpikeOut. The game also introduces new mini-games such as Crazy Delivery (a food delivery game inspired by Sega’s Crazy Taxi), Sujimon Battle (a Pokémon parody), and Miss Match (a dating app designed for Kasuga).

A major side activity is Happy Resort Dondoko Island, where Kasuga is tasked with managing his own resort island, which includes tasks like resource gathering, crafting, and social interaction. Kiryu has his own side activity, Bucket List, which focuses on reuniting with old friends and allies from previous Like a Dragon games.
