You are watching: Is Red Dead Revolver Canon? Why is Red Dead Revolver Not Canon
The main reason why Red Dead Revolver is not considered canon is the significant difference in timelines and the lack of direct connection between the two sets of games. Red Dead Revolver is set in the 1880s, while the Red Dead games are set in the early 20th century, specifically the 1890s and 1900s. The characters and events in Red Dead Revolver don’t tie directly into the Red Dead game’s narrative.
While Red Dead Revolver laid the groundwork for certain gameplay elements, such as the dead-eye aiming system, the Red Dead series expanded and refined these mechanics to create a more cohesive and immersive experience.
As such, the Redemption series is considered a separate and distinct continuity within the Red Dead series, while “Red Dead Revolver” remains a separate entry in the series’ history.

red death revolver
Red Dead Revolver is an action-adventure game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games that debuted in 2004. The game is the first entry in the Red Dead series, originally released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox in May 2004.
The game’s storyline is set in the 1880s, depicting the American frontier, and players will follow the journey of bounty hunter Red Harlow. Seeking revenge for the murder of his parents, Red embarks on a gripping mission in the single-player campaign.
In addition to the single-player mode, the game also offers a local multiplayer feature that allows up to four players to freely battle against each other or against AI-controlled robots.
Development of Red Dead Revolver began in 2000 under the working title “Gun Total”. Initially, the project was funded by Capcom and developed by Rockstar San Diego (formerly Angel Studios). However, during development, Rockstar Games acquired Angel Studios and took over the project.
After Yoshiki Okamoto left Capcom in 2003, development of Red Dead Revolver faced uncertainty and was temporarily put on hold. However, Rockstar Games eventually acquired the rights to the game later that year and resumed its development.
Upon its release, the game received mixed reviews from critics and achieved moderate sales success. Nonetheless, the Red Dead series continues to thrive with the release of the critically acclaimed sequel Red Dead Redemption in May 2010. Then another critically acclaimed work, “Red Dead Redemption 2”, was released in October 2018.
Red Dead Revolver Gameplay
Red Dead Revolver offers an engaging third-person shooter and action-adventure gameplay experience with a linear storyline. As the game progresses, players gain access to a variety of weapons, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, hunting knives, Molotov cocktails, and explosives. After completing each level, players can purchase new weapons to enhance their arsenal. Each level ends with a boss battle, and defeating these bosses rewards the player with a bounty that can be collected.

Throughout the game, players can earn ratings based on their performance, unlocking additional content such as new weapons and characters for multiplayer modes. These ratings are based on how well the player accomplishes specific objectives, such as the time it takes to complete a level or the accuracy of a weapon.
Although Red Dead Revolver does not feature an open world environment, players can freely explore Brimstone Town between levels and interact with non-player characters (NPCs). The protagonist is bounty hunter Red Harlow, but in certain levels players have the opportunity to control other unique characters, each with their own signature weapons. For example, Red wields a revolver, Jack Swift uses dual pistols, and Shadow Wolf relies on a bow.
One famous game mechanic introduced in Red Dead Revolver and later carried over to other Red Dead games was “dead eye.” This aiming system slows down time, allowing players to take precise shots at enemies. After aiming, the player character will automatically fire at the marked location, causing a large amount of damage. Dead Eye is also used in duels and consists of four phases: grabbing the weapon, drawing the weapon, locking onto the opponent, and finally rapid fire.
The game also includes a local multiplayer mode for one or two players, with the option to add AI-controlled bots. In this multiplayer component, players can engage in free-for-all battles with the goal of being the last one standing. The multiplayer mode utilizes most of the maps and character models from the single-player campaign, and adds some exclusive content.
Red Dead Redemption Revolver Plot
In the late 1860s, two prospectors, Nate Harlow and Griff, discovered gold in the Bear Mountain area and celebrated by making themselves identical revolvers. However, when Griff was captured by the Mexican army, he made a deal with the corrupt Army General Javier Diego, willing to reveal the location of the gold in exchange for sparing his life. Diego then ordered an American mercenary named Colonel Darren to kill Nate and his family to conceal the whereabouts of the gold.
Unfortunately, Nate and his Native American wife Meteor were murdered, but their son Red managed to escape after wounding Darren. Fast forward twelve years and Red has become a ruthless bounty hunter. He defeats a gang of gangsters led by Bloody Tom and heads to Widow’s Patch to collect the bounty. However, he is ambushed by Ugly Chris and his gang, who control the town. With the help of Sheriff O’Grady, Red eliminates the gang but takes O’Grady to Sulfur for treatment, foiling a train robbery along the way.
In Sulfur, Red meets Sheriff Bartlett, who offers him various bounties for dealing with dangerous outlaws terrorizing the area. While pursuing the bounty, Red befriends British stunt shooter Jack Swift, and together they take down several enemies. Red eventually learns of the gold his parents were killed for, and seeks information from local rancher Annie Stokes, who has ties to the gold and refuses to sell her property to Governor Griffin.
As Red eliminates his target, he discovers more of the conspiracy surrounding his parents’ murder. In order to seek revenge, he hunted down Colonel Darren, but was captured and forced to work as a slave to mine gold. With the help of his Native American cousin Shadow Wolf, Red escapes and sets out on a mission to kill Diego and Griffin.
In a climactic showdown, Red faces Governor Griffin in a quick draw, revealing Griffin’s true identity as his father’s treacherous partner. After defeating Griffin, Red avenges his family and decides that gold was never his true motivation.
Throughout the journey, Red forms valuable alliances with Annie, Jack, and Bartlett, ultimately walking away with a sense of justice and closure, choosing to keep his father’s revolver as a reminder of his past.
