Is The Flash still in theaters?
As of now, The Flash has reportedly been removed from theaters. The film, which was originally intended to be DC’s next blockbuster, failed to live up to expectations and performed poorly at the box office. Even though The Flash was one of the last films closely tied to the DCEU/Snyder Universe era before James Gunn took over DC Films, it failed to recoup its high production and promotion costs.

“The Flash” opened to a disappointing $64 million over the four-day weekend, making it one of the worst domestic openings for a DC film. In the weeks following its release, the film’s attendance plummeted, causing many theaters to lose money due to the sluggish box office.

To make matters worse, Warner Bros. has reportedly spent over $1.2 billion to promote and distribute The Flash and other upcoming DC movies like Shazam 2, Aquaman 2, and DCU venture Blue Beetle 》. The studio had hoped the films would become blockbusters and help recoup some of their investment. However, “The Flash” did not perform as expected and is unlikely to reach the reported $300 million budget mark.
Due to The Flash’s disappointing performance, many theaters are reportedly pulling the movie from their screens. Industry insider TheDiscFather revealed that approximately 1,500 theaters are expected to remove the film. Sluggish box office and the highly anticipated release of Raiders of the Lost Ark may have influenced the decision.
“Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the final adventure starring Harrison Ford, grossed $6 million on its opening night and is expected to gross about $65 million domestically over the weekend. With expectations for the Indiana Jones movie so high, theaters are making room for the potential blockbuster and shelving The Flash, which didn’t meet expectations.
While The Flash and Ezra Miller’s performance received some praise, the film’s poor box office performance and lingering concerns about the actor’s troubled past affected audience reception. Fans may also be tired of the various phases and changes in direction DC has gone through over the years. James Gunn is now at the helm of DC Films, and hopefully he can bring a fresh perspective that will help the company get back on its feet and launch successful movies in the future. For now, however, The Flash appears to be exiting theaters with disappointing results.

Development of a film based on The Flash began in the late 1980s, but has gone through many iterations and changes over the years. It was eventually redeveloped as part of the DCEU, starring Ezra Miller in the title role. The film went through multiple director changes, with several filmmakers attached to the project before Andy Muschietti and Christina Hodson came on board in July 2019.
The film was inspired by the comic book storyline “Flashpoint,” which involved time travel and alternate realities, allowing for the inclusion of other DC characters. Sasha Kale plays Supergirl, while Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton play Batman in different timelines.
Principal photography took place from April to October 2021 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden and various locations across the UK. Production has faced delays due to a director change, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production setbacks and controversy surrounding star Ezra Miller.
“The Flash” premieres at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles on June 12, 2023, followed by a U.S. release on June 16. Although the film was highly anticipated, it received mixed reviews from critics. While the film was praised for its humor, action scenes, and performances (particularly Ezra Miller’s), its third act and visual effects were criticized.
From a financial perspective, The Flash is considered one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. The film’s production budget is expected to be between US$200 and US$220 million, with global box office revenue of US$268 million. However, taking into account additional marketing costs, Warner Bros. is expected to suffer losses of up to $200 million due to the film’s poor performance.
Overall, “The Flash” is a compelling entry in the DCEU with its time travel narrative, inclusion of iconic DC characters, and performances from its ensemble cast. However, it faced challenges and mixed reactions from critics and audiences, making it an important discussion point within the superhero movie genre.

The Flash plot
The plot of “The Flash” revolves around Barry Allen, a young man with superhuman speed and abilities who accidentally travels back in time in order to prevent the death of his mother, Nora. In doing so, he altered the timeline, causing unintended consequences and creating an alternate reality.

After teaming up with Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) to prevent a robbery in Gotham City, Barry becomes emotional and uses the Speed Force to travel back to the day his mother died. He prevented tragedy from happening, but this act of time travel caused a ripple effect across the timeline. Barry was eliminated from the Speed Force by another speedster and ended up in a parallel world in 2013. His mother was still alive, but he lost his superpowers.
Barry meets his younger self and decides to train him to become the Flash. However, they realize that in this altered timeline, they can’t form the Justice League they know. Bruce explains the concept of the multiverse and the dangers of changing history. They decide to find Kal-El (Superman) to help them restore the timeline.
While searching for Kal-El, they discovered Kara Zor-El (Supergirl). Barry enlists Bruce’s help to restore his powers by recreating the accident that originally gave him his speed. After a series of attempts, Kara’s intervention successfully restored Barry’s powers. Together with Kara and an older version of Bruce, they face General Zod, who plans to invade Earth.
During the battle, Zod revealed that he had killed the infant Kal-El in their timeline and obtained from Kara the codex needed to repopulate Krypton’s species. Despite their efforts, they were unable to change the fate of their dead companions.
As the multiverse begins to collapse, a future version of Barry from 2013 (which was destroyed due to his attempts to alter the timeline) returns. He attempts to prevent Barry from undoing the changes and is willing to kill him in order to maintain the altered reality. However, in 2013, Barry sacrificed himself to protect Barry and erased his future self.
Later, Barry reversed his changes to the timeline and accepted his mother’s death as an inevitable part of his life. He creates new evidence to exonerate his father, Henry, who was wrongly imprisoned for Nora’s murder. Despite restoring much of the timeline, Barry’s actions had consequences, and Bruce’s appearance changed again as a result.
The film delves into the complex themes of time travel, alternate realities, and the impact of changing history. Barry’s journey involves personal growth, acceptance and understanding the true cost of changing the past. Ultimately, The Flash delivers an action-packed and emotional narrative that explores the consequences of using superhuman powers to tamper with time.
