Zone of Interest is inspired by real events, specifically the life of Auschwitz concentration camp commander and Nazi officer Rudolf Hoss. Directed by Jonathan Glazer, this 2023 film explores the inner lives of the Hawes family amid the horrors of the Holocaust. Adapted from Martin Amis’s 2014 novel, the story fictionalizes every aspect of Hoth’s life, depicting his family’s attempts to find a normal life amid atrocities.
While the film is rooted in historical context, it takes creative liberties to delve deeply into the dynamics of the Hoss family, blending fact with speculation. Despite some fictional elements, the film’s realistic depiction of the Holocaust and the involvement of real-world figures such as Rudolf Hoss imbue it with a sense of historical authenticity.

In 1943, Auschwitz concentration camp commander Rudolf Höss lived a seemingly idyllic life next to the concentration camp with his wife Hedwig and their children. Despite constant reminders of suffering beyond the garden walls, Howth focused on family outings and garden care, while servants took care of the household chores. After being promoted to deputy inspector, Hoss reluctantly left for Berlin, leaving a distraught Hedwig behind.
Her mother, shocked at how close the camp was, suddenly left. Meanwhile, a Polish girl secretly helps the prisoners by hiding food. Hoss returned to Auschwitz to oversee mass extermination operations, numb to the horror. After the party, he confesses his sinister thoughts to Hedwig. As he left his Berlin office, he retched, symbolizing his inner turmoil. The film ends with him descending into darkness, reflecting on his horrific actions.
