Kru Aung Bin History

Khruangbin’s roots date back to Houston, Texas, where guitarist Mark Speer and drummer DJ Johnson met in 2004 while playing in a church gospel band. Laura Lee Ochoa joined them in 2007 after being introduced by a mutual friend. Inspired by a shared love of Afghan music and Middle Eastern architecture, Ochoa and Speer began making music together more seriously after touring with Yppah in 2010.

The band’s name, Khruangbin, means “airplane” in Thai, reflecting their international influence. The trio developed their unique sound in a barn in Burton, Texas, which became the location for future recording sessions. Their debut EP “History of Flight” and first studio album “The Universe Smiles Upon You” (2015) are both based on Thai music of the 1960s.

Subsequent albums such as “Con Todo el Mundo” (2018) and “Mordechai” (2020) showcased their diverse influences, including Spanish and Middle Eastern sounds. Often described as Thai funk, Khruangbin’s instrumental style defies easy categorization, blending soul, rock, dub and psychedelia.

The band’s visual style included the distinctive black wigs Ochoa and Speer wore during performances and interviews. Their journey continues with collaborations such as 2022 album Ali with Vieux Farka Touré and the announcement of 2024 album A la Sala, demonstrating Khruangbin’s continued exploration of the global music landscape.
