The core concept of the Monster Hunter game is an addictive gameplay loop. Unlike traditional computer role-playing games, your hunter character does not grow or have inherent statistics or attributes. Instead, your hunter’s abilities are determined by the weapons and armor you choose to equip.
You choose the gear that best suits the task at hand, and after a successful hunt you can earn in-game currency (zenny) and receive loot from defeated monsters. These monster parts and resources collected during missions can be used to craft or upgrade your weapons and armor, allowing you to face more powerful monsters and challenging missions, creating an ongoing cycle of compulsion.
The game’s difficulty level is usually tied to your hunter’s level, which increases as you complete specific tasks. Quest rewards are often randomized, requiring players to grind and hunt the same monster multiple times to obtain specific parts. Weapons and armor also come with bonuses, penalties, and special abilities, and you can fine-tune your abilities by mixing and matching gear.
