While Blizzard has yet to officially announce a release date, based on the Season 8 Battle Pass timer and the regular release schedule, it is expected to go live on February 20, 2024. It is important to remember that the OW2 development team has not yet provided an official release date, but it is not uncommon for them to deviate from the usual schedule. We will update you here when the date is officially confirmed.

During BlizzCon 2023, the developers revealed plans for major changes to Competitive Mode in Season 9 to address community feedback. The current 5 win/15 lost games required to level up will be replaced in Season 9. Instead, players will have a progress bar to track how close they are to the next level up.

Overwatch 2 Season 9 patch notes leaked

Long-rumored Overwatch 2 Season 9 patch notes have surfaced, hinting at big changes coming to the hero shooter. While these leaks are only speculation due to Overwatch 2’s upcoming balance changes, they fall in line with previous reports of major Season 9 tweaks, particularly in the areas of tanking and damage.

While unconfirmed, these leaks suggest that notable gameplay changes could be on the horizon. The newest hero, Mauga, has been criticized for being perceived as overpowered, causing some players to quit the game. The leaked patch notes could be designed to address these issues and enhance overall balance.

Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 is a first-person shooter game released by Blizzard Entertainment in 2022. It is both a sequel and successor to the 2016 hero shooter Overwatch. The game was originally designed to provide a shared space for player-versus-player (PvP) mode and cooperative mode, but the latter was planned to be abandoned in 2023, and the focus of the game shifted entirely to the PvP element.

Major changes to the PvP mode include reducing team size from six to five, while various notable characters have received major reworks. Overwatch 2 was released for free on October 4 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game features full cross-platform play, and on August 10, 2023, Blizzard removed the Early Access label with the release of Overwatch 2 Season 6.

Overwatch 2 gameplay

Overwatch 2 is a game where players form two teams and choose a “hero” from a pool of 35 characters. Characters are divided into the following categories: “Damage” for attacking, “Support” for healing, and “Tank” for creating space.

Each hero has unique skills, including active skills, passive skills and ultimate skills. The game is mainly based on player-versus-player (PvP), with multiple modes and maps, providing casual and ranked competitive matches.

A new PvP mode called “Push” was introduced, which is similar to a tug-of-war game. Teams compete to control a robot and push a payload to the opponent’s side of the map. Overwatch 2 is free to play, unlike its predecessor which used a pay-to-win model. In Season 6, which began in August 2023, the game added three story-based PvE missions, with plans to add more missions in the future.

Overwatch 2 Development

Overwatch 2 was unveiled at BlizzCon on November 1, 2019. The original plan was to share a “multiplayer environment” with the original Overwatch. This meant that players from both games would be able to compete in existing player-versus-player (PvP) modes and retain all unlocked cosmetics and features.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan had to explain the decision to Blizzard executives, and he emphasized his “players first” stance amid the industry’s trend of new games selling out. All the new heroes, maps and PvP modes are designed to keep this shared setup between the two games.

However, Overwatch 2 was later announced as free-to-play. After its release on October 4, 2022, Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch 2’s live service would replace the original game’s live service. The original Overwatch servers were shut down on October 2, 2022. Players retain their existing cosmetics and in-game currency, and any remaining loot boxes will automatically open when Overwatch 2 is released.
