Confession Gameplay

In Pentiment, you play as Andreas Maler, an artist from Nuremberg who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation in Upper Bavaria. Set in the fictional 16th century town of Taschen and the nearby Kiersau Abbey, the game spans 25 years.

As the player, you are tasked with investigating the murder of an important figure in town. You collect evidence and talk to other characters to learn more about the crime. Ultimately, you must decide who is guilty and charge them.

In addition to the main murder mystery, there are other crimes and secrets to uncover, giving you insight into the town’s history. Throughout the game, you can also shape Andreas’ background through dialogue, such as where he has been before and what skills he has, which will affect how the mystery unfolds.

Confession plot

In 1518, Andreas Mahler was an apprentice at Kirschau Abbey near Tasching. When Baron Lorenz Rosvogel, a friend of the Bishop of Freising, was found murdered, Abbot Gnot put the blame on an old monk named Piero. But Andreas believed Piero was innocent and began his own investigation. He discovered that several people in the town had reasons to kill the Baron and were manipulated. Andreas provided evidence and one of the suspects was punished.

In 1525, Andreas returned to Taschen to find the town in chaos due to heavy taxes imposed by the abbot. After the rebellion leader was killed, Andreas opened an investigation again and discovered that similar mysterious notes had been sent before to incite violence. He charged a suspect, but the suspect was killed by the angry townspeople. The rebellion led to chaos and the abbey and its library were set on fire. Andreas was presumed dead while trying to save the books.

In 1545, the player controls Magdalene, a young artist. Her father was attacked, so she took over his work, painting a fresco about the history of Taschin. Magdalene discovers that Andreas has survived and is living as a hermit.

They discover a secret Roman temple beneath the church and learn that the town’s priest, Thomas, orchestrated the murders to hide Tassin’s true history. Thomas destroys the temple, sacrificing himself, and Andreas and Magdalene escape. Magdalene completes the frescoes, but her father dies from his wounds. She decides to leave Tassin, while Andreas stays to start over.
