“Persona 5 Tactica” emerged from Atlus’s desire to expand the “Persona” series into the strategy role-playing game genre. The developers leveraged experience with similar game styles and recognized the compatibility between Persona 5’s world and strategic RPG gameplay to integrate familiar series features into this new tactical adventure game.
“Persona 5 Tactica” explanation of the effects of each element
In Persona 5 Tactica, every element you use in combat does more than just damage. Let’s take a closer look at what each one does:
Explanation of each element’s effect
- Fire/Burn: Fire not only damages enemies, but also pushes them back slightly. If they are burned, they take extra damage on their next turn.
- Curse/Despair: This element prevents enemies from moving for the next turn. The distance they should move is added to your next turn, allowing you to move further.
- Nuke/Vortex: This creates a spinning vortex around the enemy, pulling nearby enemies closer to the center.
- Wind/Sweep: Targets hit by wind will be pushed away from you and over cover. This may end up hitting other enemies being pushed.
- Shock/Shock: Enemies who are shocked cannot move next turn, but they can still take some actions.
- Psycho/Hypnosis: This causes enemies to move towards you, even if they have to jump over cover to get as close as possible.
- Chill/Freeze: When an enemy is hit by ice, they are frozen and unable to move or act for the next turn.
- Light/Dizzy: This one is a little unpredictable. Affected enemies will move in a random direction next turn, but they can still act normally.
Explanation of each status effect
There are specific status effects that can turn the tide of battle:
- Sleep: If an enemy falls asleep, they are completely incapacitated and unable to move or do anything, but they slowly heal while sleeping.
- Forget: When a target forgets, they can still move, but they won’t remember what they were supposed to do, so they won’t attack.
These effects can be game-changing in combat and can provide strategic advantages if used wisely.

Shock
Imposes a condition that prevents the target from moving during the next turn. Useful for immobilizing troublesome enemies and hindering reinforcements, especially when strategically placed at chokepoints.
burn
Knocking the target back and dealing damage over time, weakening the enemy, repositioning them, and preparing them for subsequent attacks from allies.
freeze
Limits the target from taking any actions during the turn, as a way to temporarily completely lose dangerous threats while the team is dealing with other opponents.
vortex
Creates an area of effect that pulls all enemies towards the primary target, grouping them together while dealing damage, perfect for launching wide attacks from within the party.
Hypnosis
Forces the hypnotized target to move towards the user, dragging enemies into dangerous situations and disrupting their defenses.
dizzy
Causes the affected target to move unpredictably during the next turn, disrupting the enemy’s formation but not completely blocking their ability to attack.

Persona 5 Tactics Game
In Persona 5 Tactica, you are responsible for leading a team across a grid-like map, fighting enemies in turn-based combat. You control members of the Phantom Thieves and Erina of the Rebel Legion. During combat, you can hide to reduce damage or block attacks entirely. You have choices during combat, such as using guns for ranged attacks or summoning powerful characters, each with different abilities that affect how your enemies move. Knocking down an enemy without cover gives you an extra turn.
If you and your team surround enemies in a triangle, you can unleash a super-powerful attack called “Triple Threat” that hits all enemies in the area. As you play, you’ll collect more characters to provide your team with additional skills. You can find these by winning battles or merging different characters together. As the story unfolds, you’ll travel across maps inspired by three real-world revolutions, fighting enemy units along the way.

Development of Persona 5 Tactics
“Persona 5 Tactica” was unveiled at the Xbox Game Showcase in June 2023, marking Atlus’ entry into the tactical role-playing game genre in the “Persona” series. An interview with Weekly Famitsu sheds light on the game’s conception and development. Director Naoya Maeda, producer Kazuhisa Wada, and commercial producer Atsushi Nomura shared their experiences in game creation. Wada expressed the game’s potential to expand the horizons of the Persona series, aiming to provide new storylines featuring Persona 5 characters. Maeda emphasized the game’s ease of use for newcomers to strategy RPGs, simplifying the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of allies and enemies.
Atlus Sound Team composer Toshiki Konishi collaborated with Persona 5 lead singer Lyn Inaizumi to contribute a new musical theme to the game. The decision to make Persona 5 Tactica stemmed from Atlus’ desire to explore a tactics-based game within the Persona universe. Nomura and others felt that Phantom Thieves’ unique features, such as stealth and observation, were well suited to the tactical genre.
The development process initially experimented with character models from Persona Q2: Labyrinth the New Cinema, but ultimately, character designer Hanako Oribe settled on an art style that maintained the character’s original proportions while emphasizing certain features. , giving the game a visual style reminiscent of comic books. Although the original prototype was taken from the Persona Q game, the team refined the art direction to highlight the unique aspects of the character and align it with the tactical gameplay.
