The protagonist of Rad, Crewe Jones, is a teenage BMX racer who, along with his sister Wesley and their mother, struggles to make a critical decision in a small town. Faced with the choice between taking the SATs and qualifying for the famous Hell’s Way race, Crewe chooses the latter, despite his mother’s objections. The Hell’s Way race offers not only a chance to win, but also a tantalizing $100,000 prize, a new Chevrolet Corvette, and fame.
However, the road to Hell’s Track is fraught with challenges, all orchestrated by Duke Best, president of the United States Cycling Federation and owner of Mongoose Racing. As Crew navigates the treacherous Hell’s Track, where ever-changing rules are designed to hinder his progress, he develops a romantic relationship with Christian Hollings.
Due to last-minute rule changes and sponsorship challenges, Cru almost gave up on his dream until his sister Wesley made him a custom “Cru is RAD” shirt that inspired him to keep going.
The townspeople rally behind Crewe, funding his entry into Hell’s Track and exposing Duke’s manipulative tactics. In a climactic showdown, Crewe faces off against BMX star Bart Taylor and ultimately emerges victorious, setting in motion a chain of events that culminates in the Mongoose turning their backs on Duke. Rad celebrates BMX culture while also telling a satisfying underdog triumph against adversity, making it a timeless story of determination, friendship, and chasing your dreams.
