The name “Radwimps” is a unique combination of two English slang words, “rad” and “wimp.” According to the band, the coined word has a variety of meanings, including “good weakling” and “coward of the highest order,” reflecting their unique approach to music and self-expression.

RADWIMPS HISTORY
The Radwimps are a Japanese rock band formed in 2001 while the members were in their first year of high school in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The group’s original lineup consisted of five friends who had known each other since middle school. Vocalist Yojiro Noda’s early exposure to music, especially Oasis, sparked his interest in the field.

The band’s activities were initially centered in Yokohama, and they performed for the first time in February 2002 at BB Street in Kannai Ward. Guitarist Akira Kuwahara focused on the band’s growth after graduating from high school. The Radwimps were recognized for their participation in the 2002 Yokohama High School Music Festival, where they won the grand prize for the song “Moshi mo”.
Their debut single “Moshi mo” was released in 2003, followed by their first album “Radwimps”, a collection of songs they wrote while in high school. After a hiatus, the Radwimps returned in 2004 with new members. They released singles such as “Kiseki” and embarked on a nationwide tour in Japan. In 2005, their second album “Radwimps 2: Hatten Tojō” was released. Signed with Toshiba EMI, their debut marked a new phase.
Their album “Radwimps 3: Mujintō ni Motte Ikiwasureta Ichimai” established their popularity in 2006. Radwimps 4: Okazu no Gohan, released in 2006, ranked fifth on the Oricon charts and was certified Gold. In 2008, their single “Order Made” topped the charts. Their album “Altocolony no Teiri” debuted in 2009 at number two. The Radwimps had their second number one single in 2011 with “Dada”.
Their sixth album “Zettai Zetsumei” was certified platinum. In 2016, they gained global recognition with their acoustic album Your Name. They released the album “Blooming in the World” in 2017, “Rebel Generation” in 2018, contributed to the movie “Weathering With You” in 2019, and launched a world tour. Despite the challenges, the Radwimps have continued to create music, contributing to films such as “The Last Ten Years” and 2022’s “Suzume.” Their journey has been marked by success, collaboration and the dynamic evolution of their musical style.
