Robert James Smith (born April 21, 1959) is an iconic figure in the music industry, known for his multiple roles as a musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. His lasting impact is primarily related to his key role as co-founder, lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter of the rock band The Cure, a position he has held since 1978, making him the band’s only continuous member.
Smith’s influence on the music industry was profound, with his unique guitar playing style, distinctive singing voice and fashion sense becoming synonymous with the rise of the Goth subculture in the 1980s. His signature look of pale complexion, smeared red lipstick, black eyeliner, unkempt black hair and all-black clothing became an influential icon in the Goth community.

- He continued his education at Our Lady’s Secondary School from 1970 to 1972 and at St. Wilfrid’s Comprehensive School from 1972 to 1977.
- Smith and his sister Janet both took piano lessons as children. Sibling competition led him to guitar, and he jokes that his sister’s piano talent led him to choose an instrument she couldn’t master.
- From the age of nine, Smith began studying classical guitar as a student of guitarist John Williams, but eventually turned to self-study by listening to his brother’s record collection.
- He started taking rock music more seriously when he was thirteen or fourteen, and studied to play it like crazy.
- He received a guitar for Christmas in December 1972, a gift from his brother or parents, and it played a major role in the Cure’s early recording sessions.
