‘Rogue City’ discovers RoboCop movie plot hole
While movie tie-ins often fall short in the world of video games, the recently released RoboCop: Rogue City breaks that trend. Peter Weller reprises his iconic role as RoboCop from the first two films in this first-person shooter developed by Teyon. He’s back to clean up the criminal underbelly of old Detroit, picking up where the second film left off and telling the story of James Murphy and his partner Annie Lewis.
RoboCop: Rogue City not only references the movie, but also enriches the RoboCop universe by filling in the story gaps left by RoboCop 3. The absence of one of the series’ most important villains, the Old Man, in the third film has fans curious about his fate. With a new OCP CEO and different actors, it’s a rather unsatisfying ending for such an iconic character.
The old man played by Dan O’Herihy represents the unbridled capitalism and greed in the “RoboCop” series. He is a symbol of corporate excess, aiming to achieve his goals by any means necessary. However, O’Herlihy refused to return for “RoboCop 3” and was replaced by famous actor Rip Towne. According to screenwriter Fred Decker, O’Hairy decided to turn down the role because he considered the character “weak.”

The third film briefly mentions that the old man is “expendable,” but it never explains his disappearance or how he died. This omission leaves a void in the storyline for such an iconic character. RoboCop: Rogue City bridges the gap between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, providing the opportunity to explore and expand the series’ story. The decision to make the Old Man the ultimate villain in Rogue City was a smart move, providing a satisfying conclusion to his character arc.
In “Rogue City”, the old man is portrayed as an old and frail man, far removed from his previous administrative image. He eventually died of a heart attack and was replaced by the game’s true rival, Max Becker. The plot of the game revolves around the project “Project: Afterlife” that the old man was working on during his lifetime, which aims to replicate the technology that created RoboCop. Near the end of the game, the old man is resurrected in the form of a RoboCop 2 model and has a dramatic showdown with Murphy.
The old man’s death, while appropriate, falls a little flat for a despicable character like him. Of the corrupt characters in the RoboCop series, the Old Man is one of the most vicious. While other characters may have some understandable motivations or circumstances driving their actions, the old man who lives a life of wealth and privilege as the CEO of Omni Consumer Products has no such excuse. His ultimate fate in RoboCop: Rogue City provides a just end to a megalomaniacal character.
