Rust is a game about surviving in the wild. It was made by Facepunch Studios and was first released in December 2013. The full version was released in February 2018. You can play it on Windows and macOS, and there are also PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions released in May 2021.

In Rust, your goal is to survive by finding or getting what you need. You must manage hunger, thirst, and health to avoid death. While there are dangerous animals such as bears and wolves, the biggest threat is other players since this is a multiplayer game. You can fight using guns, bows, and other weapons. Non-player-controlled vehicles may also attack you. For safety, you can build a base or join a team with other players. Raiding other bases is an important part of the game. Rust also allows for the use of modified servers that add extra content to the game.

Rust was launched in December 2013 on the Steam Early Access program, which allowed players to play the game before it was finished. During this time, the game changed a lot. There were no more zombies in the game, instead there were dangerous animals, and a lot of changes were made to the way things were made. The graphics got better when they moved the game to the Unity 5 game engine. Rust also introduced skin color and biological gender that were tied to the player’s Steam account and could not be changed. Even though the game was released, it still received updates.

When Rust was in its early stages, it received mixed reviews, with people comparing it to other survival games like DayZ and Minecraft. Some liked its concept and gameplay, but others thought it was unfinished. Despite this, by March 2017, Rust had sold over 5 million copies. After leaving Early Access, it received mixed reviews. People praised its PvP and survival portions, but some disliked its difficulty for newcomers and the need to constantly gather materials. Despite this, the game has been successful and is considered one of the best survival games.

Rust Gameplay

Rust is a game that pits players against each other for survival in a tough open world. While animals like wolves and bears can be a threat, the main danger comes from other players. In the game, you start with only a stone and a torch, and you need to gather resources like cloth, food, stone, metal ore, sulfur ore, and wood to craft tools, weapons, and gear. You must eat to avoid starvation, and there are other challenges like drowning, hypothermia, and attacks from wild animals.

Certain areas on the map are radioactive, and you’ll need the right armor to enter safely. If you die, you can respawn at a random location or in a sleeping bag or bed you placed previously, but you’ll lose your items. Players often form groups called “Clans” to build homes, share items, and organize raids. Combat involves bows, melee weapons, and craftable guns with different types of bullets that can be used for a variety of strategies. Player-operable vehicles such as boats and hot air balloons help with transportation.

Airdrops are vital in Rust, delivering supplies via parachute. Other entities, such as attack helicopters and the CH-47 Chinook, roam the map and challenge players. Compounds provide safe zones for trades, guarded by automated turrets to prevent betrayal. Traitorous players in these zones are marked as hostile to non-player characters for a certain amount of time.

Rust Development

Rust was originally a game similar to DayZ (a popular survival mod for ARMA 2) and includes elements of Minecraft. Garry Newman, CEO of Facepunch Studios, explained that they originally cloned DayZ but decided not to fight zombies because the landmarks of the Isle of Arma could not be compared. Instead, they aimed to make a game more like the STALKER series. Rust was released on Steam Early Access in December 2013, and over time the developers added features such as animals, hunting, armor, and weapons. They even replaced the zombies with mutant bears and wolves.

The game’s development has gone through various changes. In late 2014, an experimental mode for Rust was released, using the Unity 5 game engine with improved graphics. The developers introduced an anti-cheat system called CheatPunch, which was later replaced by EasyAntiCheat. In early 2015, Rust implemented a feature where each player’s skin color was determined by their Steam ID.

Several changes occurred in 2016. Blueprints, a vital part of the game, were removed in favor of an experience system, which was later replaced by components. Fallout, originally removed in 2015, was relaunched in November 2016 with different levels. In 2017, Rust officially left Early Access, but continued to receive updates, including changes to gun mechanics and a monthly update cycle (rather than weekly) to avoid rushing new features.
