After graduating from Harvard University, I joined the Singapore Executive Service in 1987. He has held a number of senior positions in the civil service, including as Permanent Secretary at the Department of Trade and Industry and the Treasury. Yi Valan was elected to Congress in 1997. He was appointed to the Cabinet in 2006 as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry). In 2015, he was appointed Minister of Communications and Information.
In 2021, Iswaran was appointed as the Transport Minister. He oversees the development of Singapore’s transport infrastructure, including the country’s airports, seaports and public transport systems. He is also responsible for promoting trade and investment between Singapore and other countries.

In 1997, Iswaran was elected to Parliament as part of a four-member People’s Action Party (PAP) team contesting in the West Coast GRC. He was re-elected to Parliament at every subsequent election. Iswaran held various ministerial posts in the People’s Action Party government. He served as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office from 2011 to 2015, Minister of Trade and Industry (Industry) from 2015 to 2018, and Minister of Communications and Information from 2018 to 2021.
