Shrek 2 opens in theaters

Shrek 2
Newlyweds Shrek and Princess Fiona receive an invitation from Fiona’s parents to a royal ball. Despite their hesitation, they attend, bringing their donkey with them. However, Fiona’s parents are shocked by their presence, which stirs up tension. Shrek is upset by Fiona’s distant behavior and discovers her past crush on Prince Charming. Meanwhile, Fiona’s father secretly conspires with the Fairy Godmother to break up Shrek and Fiona.
Puss in Boots is hired to destroy Shrek, but ends up teaming up with him. Together, they steal a potion that makes Shrek more attractive to Fiona. After drinking the potion, they are accidentally transformed into humans. To make the change permanent, Shrek must kiss Fiona before midnight.
However, things get complicated when Prince Charming tries to woo Fiona under false pretenses. The Fairy Godmother intervenes, leading to a chaotic showdown. Eventually, the truth comes out and Shrek and Fiona embrace their true selves again, becoming ogres once again. With the Fairy Godmother defeated and Fiona’s parents reconciled, harmony is restored and Shrek and Fiona’s love prevails. In the lighthearted finale, Donkey and the Dragon celebrate their growing family.

Shrek 2 premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The film was originally scheduled to be released on June 18, 2004, but due to high expectations, the release date was moved up to May 21, and finally on May 19 at the request of fans. Due to the enthusiasm of the audience, the first five minutes of the film were even previewed on Nickelodeon’s U-Pick Live.
The film made cinematic history with its wide release in over 4,000 theaters across the United States, a first for the genre. It quickly became a box office hit. For distribution, DreamWorks Animation acquired the rights from Paramount Pictures in July 2014, then transferred them to 20th Century Fox, and finally returned them to Universal Pictures in 2018.
On the home media side, Shrek 2 was a huge success on DVD and VHS when it was released in November 2004, becoming one of the best-selling DVDs of all time. It was followed by various Blu-ray releases, including 3D in 2010 and Ultra HD Blu-ray in 2022.
Additionally, fans can enjoy the special “Far Far Away Idol,” available on DVD and VHS, a spinoff of “American Idol” in which characters from “Shrek the Monsters” compete in a singing competition judged by Shrek, Fiona and Simon Cowell.
