Sonic Superstar is a video game released in 2023 for platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Windows, and Xbox. Developed by Arzest and Sonic Team and published by Sega, the game brings back the classic side-scrolling gameplay of the 1990s Sonic the Hedgehog series. Players can choose from four characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, each with unique abilities to complete levels and defeat enemies.

Unlike previous Sonic games, Superstar has no health points, ensuring players can continue playing without ending the game. Sonic Superstar is developed by Arzest and Sonic Team and published by Sega. The idea for the game came about after the success of 2017’s Sonic Mania. Sonic Team and the developers of Sonic Mania originally planned a new collaboration, but ultimately decided to create something fresh. The project took shape when Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka and Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima were discussing a new 2D Sonic game.
Development began in early 2021 and lasted two and a half years. Arzest, led by Ohshima, handled much of the development with support from Sonic Team. The game was created from the ground up, incorporating new ideas while retaining the classic Sonic feel. Sega has officially announced Sonic Superstar in 2023, exciting fans of the series.
Sonic Superstar released
Sonic Superstar releases on October 17, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Sega announced the game in June 2023 and promoted it at events such as Gamescom. Players who sign up for Sega’s newsletter will receive exclusive downloadable content, and pre-orders come with additional bonuses like a double-sided cover, an acrylic display stand, and a LEGO Sonic-themed Eggman skin.
Free and paid downloadable content, including additional skins, robot parts, art books and soundtracks, enhance the gaming experience. The game’s release coincided with the release of another similar platformer, exciting fans of 2D side-scrolling games.
