Sonic Superstar

The 2023 video game Sonic Superstar pays homage to the classic Sonic games from the Sega Genesis era, featuring beloved characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Players will embark on a thrilling adventure through different levels and compete with iconic opponents such as Dr. Eggman and Hunter Fang. In this game, obtaining special items called Chaos Emeralds can grant players additional powers.

The development team aimed to capture the essence of the beloved side-scrolling Sonic games of the 1990s and infuse it with a modern twist. Initially, there were plans to collaborate with the creators of Sonic Mania, but that collaboration never came to fruition. Instead, the project is working with a studio founded by Naoto Oshima, one of Sonic’s original creators. Notably, this marks Oshima’s return to the Sonic series since his involvement in 1998’s Sonic Adventure.

Sonic Superstar offers a versatile gaming experience and is available on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The game received positive reviews, with critics praising its perfect blend of classic Sonic gameplay elements with modern innovations, resulting in a truly enjoyable blend of old and new Sonic experiences.

Sonic Superstar Gameplay

In “Sonic Superstars” you will play a fun game just like the old Sonic games from the 1990s. You move from left to right through different locations called “zones.” You can choose from four famous characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, each of whom has special abilities. Sonic can run fast after jumping, Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and climb, and Amy has a hammer to hit bad guys and can jump twice. After completing the main part of the game, you can also play as a character named Trip.

There are 12 areas in the game, located in a place called the Polaris Islands. Each area has its own cool stuff, like loops to go through, springboards to jump high on, and rings to collect to stay healthy. Some areas have special things, like a jungle where you can swing on vines, or a future location where you can transform into different creatures. The areas are divided into different sections called “scenarios,” and each scenario ends with a difficult boss fight.

You can also find special stages where you can collect special items called Chaos Emeralds. These emeralds grant you special powers, and if you collect all seven you can become a super version of your character. “Superstars” is the first game in the series to be played simultaneously with up to four people. You can also play against friends next to you or others online in contests, battles, and other games. The game combines classic Sonic ideas with new ones, making it exciting and nostalgic.
